Dr Manusin

Item #: SCP-4987

Object class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: All SCP-4987 instances are to be contained at all times within holding cells on site ██

Description: SCP-4987 is a species of colossal beetle closely resembling members of the scarabaeidae family, more specifically C. Atlas, instead of S. Sacer, which would be expected based on the area and supposed origin. Adult instances of SCP-4987 average (5.7)m long by (3)m wide by (1.8)m tall, with legs (2.4)m long. The fastest recorded ground speed of an instance is 30km/h. However, most cannot reach this velocity. Each instance possesses (4) wings that are kept folded beneath the elytra when grounded, but unfold when the instance prepares to or is in the process of flying, and average in length from (5-7)m. The highest recorded airborne speed is (157)km/h. All instances possess large mandibles which span (2.1)m in adulthood, and a third horn-like projection
which sprouts out from just above the mouth and can rotate vertically. All three projections grow with the instance from when they are hatchlings. However, they only become free to move at two weeks of age, presumably to prevent them injuring fellow young instances. Instances develop a gland near the mouth at (5) weeks of age which produce an enzyme which breaks down all proteins and tissues, which can be sprayed (2) meters from the gland. Subjects exposed to said enzyme for (10) seconds reported a strong stinging sensation, and skin in the exposed areas was weaker and softer than previously. Pig flesh exposed to the enzyme for (2) minutes broke down into a pink fluid. Instances never sleep unless in a state of hibernation.

All instances are able to sexually reproduce with any other instance, as they only have one single gender. However, they also posses the ability to asexually reproduce. Both of these scenarios result in an instance producing (1-3) eggs, which then hatch to form new instances, which mature over the course of (6) weeks. Newly hatched instances range from (5-9)cm long. Instances may only mate or produce eggs when an excess of sustenance is available. Instances may consume any living matter, including bone, other than wood and cartilage, which are often ejected from the mouthpieces if they are in large chunks. Because of the rapid procreation rate and ability to survive in almost any climate, (except those under (-10) degrees celcius) may result in an RK-class restructuring scenario, where most plant-life and animal species no longer exist in warm to temperate climates.

All instances posses extremely strong exoskeletons and elytra which protect their soft bodily tissues from harm. Most chemicals have no effect, however mild corrosion was noted when high-strength bases were applied. High-energy lasers are able to relatively quickly penetrate, as the proteins that make up the elytra and exoskeletons begin to dissociate at around (930) degrees celcius. A diamond-edged cutting tool was able to fully penetrate a section of exoskeleton covering thee head over a period of 15 minutes. Further attempts to fully penetrate any part of a live instance of SCP-4991 are prohibited by 05 Command as contact with inner tissues appears to aggravate instances, and the test involving the cutting tool resulted in the deaths of █ researchers and Dr ██████ before the instance was pacified.

When instances have not been fed for (6) hours, they become aggravated and begin looking for food.
This behaviour is dangerous and therefore must be avoided. After a week of not being fed, they enter a state of hibernation, where their metabolisms slow almost to a stop.

(5) instances were mistakenly not fed, and broke through the cell wall. They then split up, caused extensive damage to the site ██ structure, and causing █ other SCPs to breach containment. (4) of the instances became stuck due to corridors not being wide enough. One managed to escape by tunneling through the wall and out onto the surface, and became airborne. The instance was discovered after (3) hours near the town of [REDACTED], (11)km from site ██, where it had escaped. It was discovered to have laid (3) eggs, one of which had hatched. All instances were sprayed with an airborne tranquilizer and safely recaptured.
