Special containment procedure: An apparent cognitohazard, SCP-3837 is to be contained inside a 10ft by 10ft container at site [REDACTED]. Under no circumstances are any class D personnel or SCP foundation employees allowed to enter SCP-3837’s containment chamber without strict supervision and proper bodily restraints.
Description: SCP-3837 is a mid-1990s Zenith color CRT display TV set that is approximately 20 x 20 x 25 inches. SCP-3837 weights exactly 25 kilograms, has simple color coded external input ports, and appears to be nothing more than an old TV set. SCP-3837 is anomalous because it is able to turn itself on without being plugged into a power socket and does so only if a person comes within 10 feet of it, or if a person near it wants it to be switched on. SCP-3837 seems to have an innate sense of what a subject is thinking. It also displays signs of intelligence and possible sentience. Once it turns itself on, it displays blank static with a volume of approximately 70 decibels (this volume cannot be changed). The subject immediately goes into a trans like state and approaches SCP-3837 and sits down to stare into the screen at a distance of exactly 10 inches from the screen. After a couple of minutes SCP-3837 begins to display the subject’s thoughts on its screen. SCP-3837 will display the subject’s actual thoughts as images for a couple of minutes like a mind reading device, but then it will start to alter these thoughts it is displaying, and gradually the images it displays turn very sinister and violent. It is not known if SCP-3837 is the one changing these thoughts and displaying its own feelings, or if it is just the subject that is thinking these things, and SCP-3837 is simply displaying them. But experiments conducted with even the most tranquil and most peaceful test subjects always ends with SCP-3837 turning them into violent uncontrollable killers within minutes of the subjects being exposed to it, further supporting the long held sinister belief that SCP-3837 is indeed sentient, and indeed has hostile intentions. Subjects not restrained properly with either a strait jacket, or handcuffs, leg irons, chains, and a muzzle over the mouth begin to enter a state of emotional distress usually minutes after SCP-3837 begins showing them the violent altered thoughts. Most test subjects will begin to pound their heads against the wall, bite themselves until they bleed, and [DATA EXPUNGED]. SCP-3837 many times will try to unleash the subject on certain SCP foundation personnel or anyone it does not like and will attempt to teach the subject to kill whomever it wants eliminated. As a result, the subject will immediately attempt to run to the person’s location and liquidate that person at all costs. SCP-3837 will then fade back to static and turn itself off once it feels its job is done. The targeted individual will be known as SCP-3837-1. This is why restraints are crucial when dealing with SCP-3837. It will be impossible to sedate the subject because sedative has shown not to be able to have any effect on the exposed subject even in lethal dosages, and the subject will often display super human strength, often times breaking out of metal chains, in order to reach and kill SCP-3837-1. The only way the subject can be brought out of this state, is if the subject is hit with amnesthetic, which is usually administered through a dart that is shot into the subject through a hole in the chamber. Once the subject forgets everything SCP-3837 commanded they do, the subjects can finally reenter a state of normalcy. Further tests showed that SCP-3837 has no effect on animals, and that the AV ports do not work. For any workers entering SCP-3837’s containment unit for any reason must wear specialized goggles, that prevent them from seeing any images displayed by SCP-3837 and they will also need specialized headphones to block out any sound coming from SCP-3837.
Discovery
SCP 3837’s original owner or seller is unknown, but it is known that the item first surfaced when a family purchased it at a yard sale. That same family mysteriously went on a rampage around the town that same night.
Incident Log:
Officer Carl: Woah, did you see that family setting buildings on fire, flipping over cars, and mauling anyone in sight?
Officer Kent: Yea, that was insane. If I hadn’t fired my weapon into them, who knows how much more damage could have been done. I heard them shouting they were going to kill the mayor, and that nothing would stop them.
Officer Carl: Did you see the missing chunks of flesh and the huge gashes running up and down their bodies?
Officer Kent: Definitely, I think they look like they might even be self-inflicted
Officer Carl: We need to search their house. Lets head over there now.
(Officers reach and break into family's residence)
Officer Kent: Hey, look their TV is still running
Officer Carl: Hey, Kent, what are you doing, stop staring at that TV, lets search the rest of the house.
Officer Kent: …………….
Officer Carl: Hey, Kent, isnt that your wife and kids on the TV? Why are they on the news? And why are they all of a sudden mutilating themselves and stabbing people?
Officer Kent: ARRGHHAHHAHTHAH!!!
Officer Carl: KENT! Snap out of it!
Officer Carl: Back the fuck up Kent! Im warning you!
Officer Carl: *Fires shots into officer Kent’s head* killing him.
Officer Carl: “Shots fired, I need back up now” Officer Kent has gone rampant, and officer Kent is down.
Responding Officers: What the hell happened?
Officer Carl: I don’t know, he was watching that TV, and something happened, it started showing him his thoughts, and then he went full on berserk. And 2 of the other officers with us saw it happen too.
Responding officers: Hmmm, I think we may need to get in touch with the SCP foundation and have them look into this. I don’t think we fully understand what we are dealing with here.
Officer Carl: Definitely. This thing is sinister, and it shouldn’t be out in society causing havoc.
The foundation was alerted after this incident, and SCP-3837 was subsequently retrieved and contained.
Addendum 3837.2
Some background research into SCP-3837.2’s origins shows that it was originally purchased by a couple who were known to practice witch craft and dark arts. According to police records, this couple also mutilated themselves, and committed suicide.
