SCP-XXXX

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be stored in a hermetically sealed security locker in a designated section of Site-64. Photoelectric sensors are to be installed in each corner of SCP-XXXX's locker and any changes in level are to result in re-examination of XXXX's containment procedures.

Testing with SCP-XXXX is to be done in a flame retardant setting and with minimal personnel present within the immediate testing location. Observation of testing is to be with the use of heavily polarized windows allowing the minimum potential of light to pass through.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a Leica I camera noted as one of the first publicly available 135 film cameras to be released to the public. The film found inside SCP-XXXX is to be considered an extension of the anomalous properties of XXXX and is to be noted as XXXX-1. SCP-XXXX was found after an incident in an antiquities store in ████, France where 3 members of the public were blinded permanently and 1 person was completely vaporized. SCP-XXXX can be interacted with and presents no anomalous properties until the viewfinder is engaged with at which point the personnel interacting with SCP-XXXX is suddenly immobile and in a state of trance from an outside perspective.

This state has been observed to last from 15 to 135 seconds and results in two possible outcomes for the subject currently entranced by SCP-XXXX:

The subject does not push the shutter button relapses into a normal functioning state, usually in an incredibly melancholic mood and must be examined by psychological staff immediately and in the proceeding weeks to further the understanding of SCP-XXXX and observe the possibility of lingering mental effects acquired during exposure. All subjects of this effect have shown to return to normalcy within 5 weeks with no harmful effects examined after this point.

The alternative outcome occurs when the subject pushes the shutter button and results in the subject (Still in the trance state) taking a deep breath before placing SCP-XXXX down gently on any nearby surface. Notably, the subject's eyes begin to emit gentle white light that escalates to a dangerous level (in excess of 350,000 cd) within 15 seconds that blinded Dr.████ in the initial test back in ██/██/1998 and almost resulted in the deaths of 2 security personnel who suffered 3rd degree burns to most of their bodies due to proximity to the subject.

After this event, the subject that had interacted with SCP-XXXX was no longer present in any physical form and no changes could be observed in the environment of testing that had shown any form of escape or tampering bar the burns immediately visible underneath where the subject once stood. The only change after this point in SCP-XXXX is an audible sound of winding and a click coming from XXXX itself which is assumed to be XXXX "Resetting" itself for further use. Nothing occurs after this point and SCP-XXXX can be returned to containment or tested further for repeated results of the previous two outcomes.

Addendum: SCP-XXXX-1: Is the roll of film inside of SCP-XXXX that is comprised of over 40 photographs taken at various points after 1927 in vastly different times and locations of the world. No chronological order is found in the photographs as logic would assume indicating the purpose of the camera is not to look at the present but to capture moments in the past. All photos examined appear to be filled with joyous encounters and events that when given to subjects that did not press the shutter button, are revealed to be their happiest memory in life from their perspective that could not possibly have been captured by XXXX.

The roll is suspected to be unlimited in the amount of film present as on a previous date, ██ meters of film were gently pulled and later rewound into XXXX. The seemingly self-extending nature of SCP-XXXX-1 renders any replacement impossible. Attempts to cut or otherwise modify the film have proven dangerous as the first and only attempt resulted in a loss of █ personnel in an even more extreme reaction than those caused by SCP-XXXX.

Subjects claim that when they were entranced by XXXX, they were viewing the memory in motion and were completely present in the supposed reality set up by SCP-XXXX. When quizzed on why they did not push the shutter button, the answer is commonly along the lines of being so immersed that they could not do anything but enjoy what they had before without realizing the reality outside of SCP-XXXX.

Subjects that have pressed the shutter and suffered presumed vaporization by XXXX are noted to appear in the photograph resultant from the shutter press, and are noted to appear joyous and completely in place within the context of the photograph.

Interviewed: D-31974

Interviewer: Dr. Talbot, Cognitive Psychologist.

Foreword: Interview conducted around 3 days after D-Class was exposed to SCP-XXXX on ██/██/2014 and was entranced for approximately 45 seconds. D-31974 is an ethnically Mexican man aged 52, and was originally serving life for several felonies in relation to organised crime in ████, USA.

<Begin Log>

Dr. Talbot: Hello D-31974, how have you been feeling after your interaction with XXXX?
D-31974: The camera?

Dr. Talbot: Yes the vintage camera you interacted with 3 days ago.

D-31974: I feel cold… n-not like physically but I can't push past the feelings I felt in that moment, you know?

Dr. Talbot: What feelings? Can you describe what you saw or felt exactly as I'm not quite sure I understand.

D-31974: Well, I held the camera up to my eye and looked through the… “seeing part” and saw nothing but black for around 4 or 5 seconds. Then Light slowly faded in and I wasn't standing in the room anymore. I was sat comfortably on a bench looking out at the sea from Campeche. I remember it so god damn well but… actually being there again… it's home you know?

Dr.Talbot: So it was a memory that you were being shown?

D-31974: Yes, I may be wrinkling a bit now but my memory of that moment in particular could never be lost. I was only 17 at the time and was far from the scars I have now. Amaranta, the most beautiful perfect soul that I ever had the luck to meet was leaning beside me-

Dr.Talbot: Sorry to interrupt but a living person was beside you? Was there any form of communication or meaning behind all this?

D-31974: Ease off on the questions, Doc and I'll tell you. Yes, she was alive and no not really. The whole reason this memory is so vivid to me was the lack of communication. This was the last moment of pure bliss before I took the path I did. She wanted me to leave my fathers line of business and come with her to "things greater than this" but I was too coc- scared to even think of it. I was so close to letting go of it all and running with her to live a life I could only really dream about now, but the words just wouldn't come out.

D-31974 shows signs of mild distress, a notable clench in his fist and slight tears are formed in the corners of his eyes.

Dr.Talbot: Apologies if this is distressing, but it would really be helpful to know why this was shown to you, if you can think of any specific reasons or details?

D-31974: That small moment was the happiest moment of my life, and the biggest regret too. Those seconds where I saw a future that I never got. I just can't move past that, man.

D-31974 goes quiet for a 14 seconds before whispering quietly in Spanish: (I could have saved you, my flower)

Dr.Talbot: Alright, I think that’s just about enough for today. Thank you, D-31974.

<End Log>

Closing Statement: D-31974 was returned to his quarters and monitored for the coming weeks and displayed signs of apathy and depression before returning to normalcy 29 days after exposure but with occasional moments of previous afflictions still occuring.
