Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: Due to the psychological and highly infectious nature of SCP-XXXX, all cases are to be locked in a 200x200x4-meter air-tight greenhouse in Provisional Site-132 having no contact with personnel except when testing. Surveillance will be done through multiple cameras in place around SCP-XXXX. A breach in the greenhouse should be reported immediately along with any budding fungi in or outside the greenhouse. In any case of budding outside of the greenhouse; all personnel not equipped with the necessary training and equipment to recontain SCP-XXXX within a 260 km radius of the containment breach should be evacuated. The area should also be screened in Agent Orange to stop further reproduction of SCP-XXXX. Any and all civilians or Foundation personnel that may have been exposed to any spores released by the buds should be quarantined immediately until proven to not be infected. Wild specimens of SCP-XXXX should be terminated unless ordered otherwise by 04 level personnel or higher due to the difficulty of containing an already reproducing case of SCP-XXXX.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a carnivorous fungus-like organism resembling the cap of Amanita muscaria although far larger and with no stem. 74% of SCP-XXXX's mass is in the body which lies entirely underground beneath the cap. The body, on average, will grow to a size of 2.2 meters in height and 1.8 meters in width but can reach an unlimited size when given enough resources to continue its growth with largest recorded case reaching sizes of 21.9 meters in height 15.6 meters in width. Although no matter how large SCP-XXXX gets, the cap will never exceed a 2.8-meter diameter. This could be explained by the fact that most of SCP-XXXX's size isn't used for consumption rather it is used to store proteins and lipids for later use during reproduction.

SCP-XXXX has been recorded to occupy any areas that are dark and moist. Including caves, hollow tree logs, and basements. It attracts prey by releasing spores that manipulate the nervous system so that euphoria is triggered in humans creatures capable of emotion. Any subject that is caught in the spores' radius, from 25-meters to 150-meters depending on the size of SCP-XXXX, will travel to the cap of SCP-XXXX. Once within a distance of 2 to 5 meters of SCP-XXXX’s cap, the dense cloud of spores will cause the subject to begin to hallucinate objects that will persuade the subject to stay near the cap of SCP-XXXX until death from malnutrition or dehydration.

When under the hallucinogenic effects of SCP-XXXX, the subject still retains its usual sleep patterns but the majority of the subject’s day is spent conversing with hallucinations. This will continue non-stop until the subject’s death. Further testing is needed to understand why the subject makes no attempt to feed or hydrate their self. Once the subject faints and/or dies, SCP-XXXX will open its cap to make a provisional mouth leading to the digestion chamber. Then tendrils will wrap around the subject and pull the corpse into the mouth of SCP-XXXX. The corpse will then be broken down in the digestive chamber. SCP-XXXX will digest all material leaving no remains of the subject.

Every Mid-spring, cases of SCP-XXXX will use all the energy they have stored to bud mushrooms within a 10 to a 100-meter radius around its mouth. These mushrooms belong to the Amanita genus but are not similar to any known species as they change color to camouflage themselves with the current environment. Once ready, the mushrooms depending on the size, will discharge 500,000 to 10,000,000 spores genetically and functionally different than the spores used to hunt prey. These spores are produced so when inhaled they will circulate in the blood-stream of any living organism that may inhale them until it reaches the brain. Where it will begin to take over its host in 24 to 36 hours. Though, no symptoms will be shown in the host until the last eight hours of infection. Subjects at this stage will suffer symptoms such as extreme hunger and dehydration until the last two hours when the subject will suffer from extreme fatigue. When the subject succumbs to their fatigue and faints, the spores will completely take over the nervous system of the subject causing them to wake up and search for the aforementioned conditions of an area that is dark and moist. Once the infected subject has come across these conditions, it will try to kill itself by any means possibly granted by its current surroundings. Methods recorded are: blunt force trauma with any object near to the subject, biting or clawing into one's own wrists or neck, and starving themselves. Once the subject has died the new case of SCP-XXXX will grow roots into the deceased organism and the dirt around it, consuming the organism as it grows. Once the body of SCP-XXXX has grown to a size of 117 to 126-centimeters in height and 86 to 97-centimeters in width, it will begin to release hunting spores.

Addendum XXXX-01: On ██/██/2018, Robert ███████ and Kevin ██████ , ages: 10 and 12, went missing during an excursion in the local woods near ████████████, Pennsylvania. It was only brought to The Foundation’s attention when a search party also went missing while looking for them. MTF Sierra-13 (“Sulfur”) was dispatched to the area on ██/██/2018 arriving at 18:00 to investigate any anomalous activities that might have taken place. At 21:00 the location of SCP-XXXX was marked when Pvt. Thatch began babbling over radio incoherently and was soon spotted afterwards, along with the rest of Fireteam Red, showing multiple different behavioral quirks common amongst victims of SCP-XXXX around what was described by Lt. Whitelock as “the mouth of a large-fungus like organism”. Fireteam Red’s location was then screened in Agent Orange successfully terminating the case of SCP-XXXX along with Fireteam Red. The digestive chamber of SCP-XXXX contained traces of human DNA that are assumed to be the two boys and the search party.

Addendum XXXX-02: The gastric acids of SCP-XXXX are confirmed to be 12x more corrosive than hydrofluoric acid. Being able to digest the entirety of a human body in a matter of hours. More testing concluded that the gastric acids could also dissolve concrete, steel, and most plastics. The corrosiveness of its acid is most likely an evolutionary mutation to allow quick digestion of other organisms to permit its ability to grow to sizes incomparable to most other fungi.

Addendum XXXX-03: As of 11/26/2018 there is currently no way to mitigate the psychological effects of SCP-XXXX although testing has shown there is a 5-15 second window where subjects can leave SCP-XXXX’s spore radius with only mild symptoms of depression for around 3 hours after contact. Although subjects that do not understand the danger of SCP-XXXX will not try to leave the radius. Once the subject has been fully put under SCP-XXXX’s effects there is no current way to retrieve them without risking the loss of further personnel. Thus, in the case of a subject being entranced by SCP-XXXX. They are to be shot before they enter the range of SCP-XXXX’s tendrils except if needed otherwise for research.
