Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Neutralized Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is stored in an appropriate sized vault and kept under watch by one unarmed guard. The device is to be regularly monitored for any movement or changes in shape or size. Any activity is to be reported within a 24-hour period. SCP-XXXX is stored in a dedicated containment vault located in the ████████ Facility requiring access level 2 or above. The room is to be kept at a temperature of 10 C or colder at all times. During testing, personnel are to stay at least 1 meter away from SCP-XXXX unless wearing a heat-containing suit. Outside of testing, any movement or temperature changes inside the chamber are to be reported immediately. SCP-XXXX is not to be tampered with or observed without necessary cooling precautions in place.
Description: SCP-XXXX consists of 4 engraved rings made of smooth steel and copper. Evidence implies that a 5th ring existed at one point, but has either been lost or destroyed. 3 of the four (4) rings have a diameter of exactly 20 meters, with the last ring measuring exactly fifteen (15) meters. SCP-XXXX is shaped with one of the 20 meter rings on the bottom to serve as a base. A notch cut along the circumference of this bottom ring allows both of the other 20 meter rings to rest on opposite ends of the base ring, with the edge of the top two rings meeting exactly over the center of the bottom ring. The fifteen 15 meter ring also sits directly on top of the base ring, and uses a cog-shape pattern that fits into the outline inside one of the other 2 rings fitted onto the base.
The SCP-1935 rings are shaped to allow a pattern of rotation along the top of the base structure, with the twenty (20) meter rings moving clockwise and the 15 meter ring moving counter-clockwise. However, attempts to begin rotating the rings in either direction through the use of physical force have proven unsuccessful. Tests have failed to evoke any movement out of SPC-XXXX at all. The research team assigned to study SCP-XXXX have concluded that either operation of the mechanism is impossible without the fifth ring, or that the entire machine itself is one piece of a larger, undiscovered system.
Discovery Log: SCP-XXXX was discovered by a team of divers in a trench located in the Pacific Ocean, ██ kilometers away from shore, and 129 kilometers below the surface of the water. Extraction took place on Feb/7/██ through the use of pressure resistant remote drones. The origins of SCP-XXXX is currently unknown, however, several of the specialists at the site during retrieval have proposed that some of the debris surrounding the location may once have been pieces of an artifact pertinent to the history of SCP-XXXX, but no information of value can be discerned due to damage presumably caused by water erosion.
Addendum XXXX-001:On Sep/16/1992, it was discovered during testing at the Lazarus Facility that SCP-XXXX will initiate motion autonomously when its metal rings reach a temperature of at least 30 C, which resulted in an immediate rotation of the non-base rings. The speed at which the rings moved constantly accelerated at a rate of 33% per minute. As the rings got faster, the constant motion against the metal quickly built up friction, which caused the temperature of the metal rings to progressively increase as the machine built up speed.
It is likely that the SCP-XXXX mechanism can use any heat sources as power, regardless of if that source is from the friction that the machine creates, or from an artificial source introduced externally. The maximum temperature/speed SCP-XXXX is capable of achieving is unknown. It is possible that SCP-XXXX is unable to operate at peak efficiency without the addition of its 5th ring, despite its apparent capabilities without it. The hottest recorded temperature SCP-XXXX has ever operated at was █,███ C, which was reached at a rotation rate 1,234,809 cycles per minute. Despite being in motion at temperatures significantly hotter than the normal melting point of the alloys used in the rings, there was no visible deterioration in their shape or structural integrity. The test was promptly concluded due to structural damages inflicted onto the facility, including the test chamber and surrounding labs having melting into a reduced molten-liquid state, and ██████ of ███-███. The total number of deaths was ███, with 17 personnel missing. SCP-XXXX had to be slowed to an eventual stop through cooling by a security team through using a liquid-nitrogen based-spray hose. 48 hours were allotted after the incident to allow the affected location time to cool before the facility was decommissioned for the following 127 days to allow substantial reconstruction.
