SCP-XXXX

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures:

SCP-XXXX is to be protected by a chain link fence which completely surrounds SCP-XXXX with an extra kilometer of land between the fence and SCP-XXXX. The perimeter is to be checked weekly for any damage to the fence, as well as remotely monitored from a base station several kilometers from SCP-XXXX. Any attempts at unauthorized entry will result in an arrest. SCP-XXXX is to be understood by the public as a radiation hazard and to be treated in such way. Emergency medical supplies, rations, and fuel are to be stashed in 10 different spots in case of accidents, storms, or a containment breach. All emergency supply depots are outlined on multiple maps within the base station, and on the network. In the event of SCP-XXXX-1 appearing within SCP-XXXX, use lethal force.

Description:

SCP-XXXX is roughly 2000 square kilometers of land within the western area of Nunavut, Canada SCP-XXXX’s space exists within tundra, which is similar in appearance to most of Nunavut's geography. All physical traits associated with this region have no difference between any other area around SCP-XXXX. While standing within SCP-XXXX during any point between 00:01 and 23:59, no anomalous will normally occur. During the time 00:00, any individuals and non-natural materials existing within SCP-XXXX will vanish. All recordings and observations of the phenomenon have shown that any person or persons and equipment such as tents, bags, preserved foods etc. will appear to fade away from view for the duration of this single minute. Objects and materials that do not appear to be affected by SCP-XXXX are items similar to campfires, non-preserved foods, and simple fabric clothing. It is still possible to maintain contact with any person or persons that are affected by SCP-XXXX by using any form of wireless communications equipment. Radios, phones, and even video feedback is possible in this manner.

Any person under the effects of SCP-XXXX will undergo a similar anomalous phenomenon, where all visible individuals and man made objects outside of SCP-XXXX will fade away slowly for the duration of 1 minute. While in this transition it is not possible to leave SCP-XXXX. All individuals attempting this have reported never being able to move fast enough to reach the edge of SCP-XXXX, even if said individual was standing at the edge. SCP-XXXX seems to affect all living creatures. Once any individual has made their way inside SCP-XXXX in this manor, a series of events will gradually begin to occur. Every day for a period of up to 104 days, the temperature will steadily rise to an average of 11 degrees Celsius. Everyday for up to 172 days the landscape will change slowly, with video timelapses taken showing an increase of change during darkness, into what most closely resembles a needle leaf forest. During all experimentation with SCP-XXXX all times for this evolution greatly vary, depending on the day of the year, the temperature during the time of entry, if it was snowing, and other small variables. Certain experiments have shown this event can occur in 23 days, while the longest took 172 days.

SCP-XXXX’s forest state appears to be its true form, and landmass, since after it has achieved this shape it will no longer visibly change. All natural landmarks and man made creations within SCP-XXXX remain in the same place as well. Many expeditions have been made into SCP-XXXX, however finding SCP-XXXX’s true size is difficult. SCP-XXXX has both a sun and a moon on the same exact cycle as our own, but no stars. This make long forms of traveling within SCP-XXXX extremely difficult. Inside SCP-XXXX it appears to have the exact same area of anomalous land as our reality, which will follow the same exact effect to any individuals and man made materials within its area, however this can only happen on the same day you entered SCP-XXXX’s reality. If you are not in the area during this time, you have to wait another year for the day again. Again, depending on SCP-XXXX’s inner variables will depend on how long it takes to return to normal reality.

SCP-XXXX has, by all calculations, an infinite sky. When bringing aircraft into SCP-XXXX, it is impossible to reach a maximum air height. The highest distance climbed before fuel reached unsafe levels was where the thermosphere of this plane’s atmosphere should have been at roughly 800 kilometers. No decrease in air pressure or gravity was ever recorded during this flight. SCP-XXXX does exhibit seasonal change from summer to winter which is not as harsh as the same area outside of SCP-XXXX. SCP-XXXX also has a magnetic north and south, exactly the same as earth’s. While having seasonal changes, and magnetic poles, there is no evidence that SCP-XXXX has places in itself which has higher temperature or lower temperature or in any shape spherical. It is as if SCP-XXXX is permanently around the 45th latitude on a flat plane.

Inside SCP-XXXX, it is inhabited by intelligent humanoids who travel in large clans, in a hunter-gatherer like fashion. Communication with this group of people have so far been unsuccessful and have always been met with lethal force. While appearing human at first, certain discrepancies in anatomy have revealed that these creatures are not human. After this discovery they were designated SCP-XXXX-1. During first contact it was noticed that they wear wooden looking masks of various predator creatures at all times of the day and night. After an unsuccessful ambush attack on Foundation staff, it was realized that the masks are made of bone, and grow out of their faces. It was a part of their skulls, and protrudes out as extra protection for their eyes and brain. The humanoids mouths are below their face, underneath their chin. It appears to be human in all aspects except for a sharper variety of teeth instead of just canines. SCP-XXXX-1 have no vocal cords, and are not normally capable of producing sound with their mouth. They do however have their own sign language. Studies report it is a very primitive but effective way of communication, which have been seen being used for hunting, socializing, and in combat. SCP-XXXX-1 do not have any reproductive organs, and do not exhibit signs of aging. They still exhibit characteristics of sex but do not perform sexual acts, and show no forms of sexual intimacy towards others of their kind. While SCP-XXXX-1 have high intellect, their seems to be no signs of any advancement beyond neolithic tools. They have been seen making fire but do not attempt cooking any raw meat. They have been seen planting edible berries to grow bushes but will begin travel to another region of this reality, instead of sowing the land. In a few rare instances it has even been shown that they understand and comprehend the use of firearms, and have used them against foundation expeditions in rare cases if they could obtain it from a foundation member, but afterwards will get rid of it. It is unknown why SCP-XXXX-1 decides not act on these advancements.

SCP-XXXX-1 have their own anomalous properties that have been documented over years of study. The only known way that they reproduce is by tearing off a thin slice of their face plate and laying it on the face of a human corpse. They will then bury the corpse in animal hide with charcoal symbols painted on, face up, and after roughly a single moon cycle it will be dug up. The body will be thrown into a bonfire (commonly with others as usually they are able to obtain more than a single corpse at a time), and they will begin ritualistically dancing in unison. The bodies while in the fire do not appear to burn, and after five minutes of this ritual the bodies will come out of the fire unharmed and alive. Anyone transformed into SCP-XXXX-1 will not appear to retain any memories it had in life. Their face plate will rarely retain the same features of the SCP-XXXX-1 that gave it to them. It appears that the face plate will resemble the kind of predatory lifestyle that specific SCP-XXXX-1 exhibits. Personality traits from the deceased persons and the living SCP-XXXX-1 are strikingly similar. If the deceased person was documented as shy, it could be seen in their socialization with other SCP-XXXX-1. If the deceased person had an unconscious tick, such as tapping their thigh, it could be seen in that SCP-XXXX-1. It has been recorded that any musically talented SCP-XXXX-1 in their human life, retained the abilities and would demonstrate if given the opportunity, such as beating the rhythm of a song, or (in the rare instances they don’t become immediately hostile and begin searching for threats) playing instruments they find. Wildlife common to temperate regions of earth also appear commonly in SCP-XXXX. If that creature resembles a SCP-XXXX-1’s mask, they are able to comprehend the primitive sign language, and become docile towards any SCP-XXXX-1’s in the area. If either the animal or SCP-XXXX-1 is threatened in any way, each will aid each other until the threat is gone. It has also been documented that SCP-XXXX-1 will not hunt or eat any predatory animal with a resemblance to another SCP-XXXX-1 in their tribe. As long as the tribe does not have a member resembling that animal, they will hunt and eat it. Some of the tribes documented have gone as far as creating a codependency with other animal packs. The most common type of animal is the wolf, but fox, lynx, bear, cougar, bobcat, owl, and coyote have been seen traveling with different tribes. SCP-XXXX-1 has many more ritualistic tendencies with anomalous effects (over viewed in addendum).

It is unknown what kind of relationship SCP-XXXX and SCP-XXXX-1 have with each other, if any. SCP-XXXX-1 seems to be completely aware of the kind of influences SCP-XXXX has, and even understands the danger of being within the anomalous area. Many tribes of SCP-XXXX-1 have been recorded avoiding the entrance/exit of SCP-XXXX, which gives light onto some of their understanding of SCP-XXXX.

SCP-XXXX-1 is capable of using the anomalous area of SCP-XXXX and traveling to and from. However, prolonged exposure on earth is extremely detrimental to any SCP-XXXX-1. It is not known what causes this, but they usually expire one month being on earth. This does not apply to SCP-XXXX-1 created on earth.

Discovery:

For over 100 years the native Inuit people of Nunavut (previously the Northwest Territories) have had people go missing in the area of SCP-XXXX, most of which was attributed to animal attacks, while the more superstitious of them believed it to be spirits protecting sacred grounds. During the more modern era, missing persons reports of hikers and campers around the area of SCP-XXXX steadily climbed until it caught the eye of the foundation, which sent out a small team to search the area. Due to the specific nature of SCP-XXXX, all exploration and research prior to official discovery did not find any conclusive evidence of anomalous activity. In 2011 however, an influential survivalist named [REDACTED] decided to catch up on the rumors of this sacred ground and missing persons for himself, and decided to bring a group of people, some broadcast equipment, and survive in the tundra for entertainment purposes. Within one month of living within SCP-XXXX’s travel phase foundation personnel holding jobs within the entertainment industry found out about the broadcasts, and immediately took over command, confiscating all evidence and applying amnestics to anyone involved.

After a period of six months foundation staff recovered [REDACTED] and questioned what he knew, before applying amnestics. What followed were a large series of experiments to find the rough measurements of SCP-XXXX’s area of effect, and what was held inside SCP-XXXX. Along with expedition research being carried out, large sweeps of the area were done to find any other anomalous properties. Bones of the now named SCP-XXXX-1 were found within a 100 kilometer radius of SCP-XXXX. It is unknown if any more areas on earth hold SCP-XXXX areas, as its existence has some connection to native american and Inuit culture.

Addendum

SCP-XXXX-1 Lifestyle:

SCP-XXXX’s diet consists almost completely off of raw meat. Any animal that was hunted by tribes of SCP-XXXX would be skinned on the spot, and harvested for every available material that could be used. Once it was complete, the hunters would all bow to the carcass and all sign something, which foundation experts believe to be a praise or prayer to the animal. The meat would be brought back to the main tribe raw, and eaten by all those who were hungry, but not before giving praise to the meat.

SCP-XXXX-1’s hunting consists of using spears, bows, and fishing hooks for river fish. Hunting is an almost constant activity that was rotated between the tribe, as almost all are hunters. Some are crafters, sat back at wherever the tribe decided home was for the month, making new clothes, bags, and tools. Almost everything is constantly being remade and repaired with the need for more clothes and tools as more SCP-XXXX-1 are brought into the tribe. It is unknown how more SCP-XXXX-1 become part of the tribe without the need for a human body. Through all documentation and recording, no evidence has been found that there should be more SCP-XXXX-1 in a single tribe, but a head count reveals more. A hypothesis brought up by foundation staff is that their hunting habits are intrinsically connected to their reproduction. After a ritual done to any leftover organs and bones, these things are buried in some of the deceased animals hide. After a single moon cycle of this burial, there is a small chance one of the tribes hunting animals will disappear, and an SCP-XXXX-1 resembling that animal will be seen with the tribe. All documentation has not brought forward any evidence conclusive enough to be fact.

SCP-XXXX-1 has ceremonies when coming across other SCP-XXXX-1 tribes similar to Inuit marriages. Once a ritualistic ceremony is completed both tribes will come together to become bigger. A large hunt will begin to prepare for a feast to celebrate the occasion. It is not uncommon for foundation staff to be accidentally caught during the documentation of these ceremonies and eaten.

Incident Report 41:

On March 4th, 2015, A total containment breach occurred following a loss of contact with the SCP-XXXX base station four months prior. Any attempted contact with expedition teams Alpha through Delta all came negative. After SCP-XXXX ended its anomalous properties a tribe of SCP-XXXX-1 with over 100 members assaulted the base station using modern technology such as firearms, and Kevlar vests. They had an understanding of where the hidden base station was and after 7 hours of fighting the tribe had killed all station personnel. Power was shut off to the station and surrounding areas, and all contact was lost.

Once foundation staff realized what was wrong, a mobile task force unit was sent out to the area immediately. A complete sweep of the area was done, and no bodies were found. No SCP-XXXX-1’s were found. Temporary staff were sent to assess the damages and situation with a full time security unit posted, ready for another complete assault. 28 days after the incident, SCP-XXXX’s base station lost contact again. When another task force unit was sent out, it was found that all staff had been transformed into SCP-XXXX-1 by small groups hiding out near supply depots. Video surveillance shows them returning back to SCP-XXXX after all the transformations were complete. This did not follow normal understanding of SCP-XXXX-1 and so multiple task units were deployed to solve the situations. It took approximately two years to neutralize all SCP-XXXX-1 from earth. It was found that if a SCP-XXXX-1 was created on earth it would not be under the same effects as a SCP-XXXX-1 from SCP-XXXX.
