When you're working here surrounded by all these… things, it's nice to take some solace in the fact they're contained. No matter how dangerous or terrifying they may be, you can see that they're in a little box, or cell, and not behind you.

The creatures are contained, safely kept away from the outside world You can at least tell yourself that if everything goes according to plan you shouldn't wind up in a body bag. That's what I thought. But even the almighty foundation, the "guardians" of humanity can only do so much. There's only so much horror in this world that can be stopped. This is where the foundation is useless, powerless against these disturbed mockeries. Wherever there's people to be found, they're here. They could be right in front of you, and you would be completely oblivious to the fact that you exist only because they want you to. The blur of motion in the corner of your eye, creaking of the floorboards when you sleep at night, squinting to realize there was nothing there after all. What do you do when that happens? You probably ignore it, put it down to a trick of light. That's understandable. I used to do that too.

I remember once, many, many years ago, an old friend lay dying under the cold gaze of the moon in my arms. As he passed from this world, he told me this "We die in the darkness, so that you may live in the light.". But he was wrong. We don't live in the light, we live under the shadow of those who stalk us, under the thumb of those creatures, at the mercy of our puppeteers. And the irony of it all? Without even the faintest grasp of the truth, we keep walking onward and upwards like pawns on a chessboard.
