Elevator Pitch: A teleporting canyon upon viewing compels the person to go inside. This results in mental changing of the person.
SCP-5524
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: When an instance of SCP-5524 is located civilians are to be kept away from the area. They are to be kept away until SCP-5524 relocates again. All personnel are strictly forbidden from viewing SCP-5524.
Description: SCP-5524 is a canyon located in Mexico and Southwestern United States. Its location changes at times seemingly at random making long term containment impossible although it stays within that region. It will also only appear in areas far from human civilization usually deep in a desert. The canyon's appearance changes as it moves although it always contains a valley with a river inside it. From an outside perspective it appears like a normal canyon. SCP-5524 can also alter memories as people who view it will remember the canyon always being there despite it may have even teleported right in front of them. People who view SCP-5524 will also feel compelled to enter the valley however is unaffected if viewing through a camera or other sort of device. Once one person has entered the SCP-5524 other people will no longer feel compelled to enter as well. People who enter the valley will disappear and bystanders have reported still being able to see them but they were someone else and will eventually feel the need to stop watching them. This effect can also be avoided through devices of sorts. People who have entered the valley will reappear in their homes after 1-2 weeks and will go back to their regular schedules. They appear to have no recollection of what happened in the canyon and no one will recall their absence.
SCP-5524 Observer Test
A D-30297 is assigned to enter the canyon while D-012934 is assigned to watch. D-30297 enters the valley. The D-012934 reports that D-30297 is still in view. D-012934 reports that D-30297 then walks down to the river. D-30297 then stops by the river and sits there. D-012934 reports that D-30297 is still there but not himself. D-012934 then turns around begins to walk off site. D-012934 is commanded to walk back to site and continue observation. D-012934 does not comply. D-012934 is then threatened to return to site or be terminated. D-012934 remains silent and continues walking. D-012934 is terminated. D-30297 reappears after 9 days. D-30297 reports not having any memories of the event. D-30297 has no apparent physical change. However D-30297 reports no longer feeling suicidal after the event and is tested to having better mental health.
SCP-5524 Entry Test
A remote controlled drone is sent into SCP-5524 with sampling equipment, a camera, and some live mice.
Camera activates. Interior of the canyon appears the same as viewed from the outside. The live mice don't appear to react. The drone approaches some foliage where it takes samples of the leaves and some bark from the tree. The drone also takes a rock as well as some sand. Drone approaches the river where it takes a sample of the water. Drone then continues exploration of the rest of the canyon where everything appears normal. Drone exits SCP-5524 with no problem. Tests show that the live mice were unaffected at all. Samples of the sand are normal as well as the water, leaves and bark. Nothing is out of the ordinary.
SCP-5524 Human Entry Test
D-40291 is equipped with a week's worth of provisions, as well as sampling equipment. D-40291 is sent into SCP-5524 with a camera and a microphone.
Camera activates. Subject is walking toward SCP-5524. Subject reports being fully aware about SCP-5524's mental effects. Reports not wanting to enter the canyon but 'his legs just won't stop'. Subject enters SCP-5524. Subject remarks on how time flies by and how it's already nighttime. When subject is told that it is 12 in the afternoon and the sun is still up he acts surprised and focuses the camera to the sky where it is shown to be night. Subject continues inward and reaches a tree. Subject is asked to retrieve a sample. A twig and leaf are collected. Subject remarks that the tree was one of the largest oak trees he's ever seen and that it reminds him of his childhood. Researchers report that the tree in the camera was a Palo Verde a common tree found in the desert. Subject continues on. Subject reaches the river where he is asked to take a sample. Subject says he can't. Subject is ordered to take a sample. Subject reports he would but the water is too clean for his dirty hands. Subject is then commanded to forget about it and continue on. Subject remarks on how the wind is too cold and that will start snowing soon. Subject is told that he is in a desert in which he responds with 'No, no, I have to get home before the stars fall.' Subject reaches the left wall of the valley. Subject is commanded to start climbing. Subject complies and climbs it while muttering 'My wife's calling. I can't be late for dinner again.' Subject is asked what he hears and he responds saying he hears his wife's voice but it's not her for it is too beautiful. Subject is ordered return. Subject responds with the same phrase that he has to get home before the stars fall. Subject talks about his former job as a bus driver and how he wouldn't be here if he just got home in time. Subject reports hearing voices that sounded too divine to be real and that he saw beings that were cleansed as they were reborn without their past faults. Subject reaches the top of the valley where the camera cuts out. He remarks on how the stars are bright tonight before correcting himself and saying that those aren't stars and I will never fall. All feeds cut out. D-40291 returns in 12 days. The samples he took as well as the provisions and camera have all disappeared. He reports no memories of the event. Once again there is no physical change. Subject is reported to be much more cheerful and researchers as well as other D-Class report enjoy being around him.
SCP-5524-1 Human Entry Test
After the first entry test the foundation felt no need for a second one. However SCP-5524 has appeared in Greenland as a ravine which is something previously thought impossible and has been labeled as SCP-5224-1. It appears as a barren ravine in Greenland with a river and various foliage in it. There has been only one instance of SCP-5224-1. The SCP-5224-1 presents the same mental effects as SCP-5224. Another entry test has been authorized.
D-58933 is equipped with a flashlight, a week's worth of provisions, as well as sampling equipment. D-58933 is sent into SCP-5524-1 with a camera and a microphone.
Subject enters SCP-5524-1. The camera feed shows the same interior as when viewed from the outside. Subject is ordered to continue on where he retorts back that the anomaly would be making him keep moving in the first place and there was no need for giving out useless commands. Subject continues on and remarks its beginning to get hot and says the sky is the most awful shade of red. He is told that it is winter in Greenland but he insists that its too hot. He is commanded to continue on but he snaps back saying it was not up to them what he will and will not do and instead it was 'him'. Subject approaches the river and is asked to take a sample. He once again retorts back of how they are not in charge here and afterwards remarks how it was stupid to ask that at all as there was no river. Subject continues to complain about the heat and asks to take his helmet off. Subject is told that he's not wearing a helmet in which he once again replies that why wouldn't they just shut up and it was not up to them to decide. Subject continues on complaining about the heat and his helmet, and that his feet were tired from all this walking. He is given several more commands to take samples and to return which he simply ignores. Subject suddenly stops and is asked why. No reply. Subject simply says yes sir and then multiple gunshots are heard although camera footage shows nothing. Subject continues on forward and remarks on how they just should've brought in tanks. He is once again ordered to return which is once again ignored. Subject continues forward remarking on how it was hotter then he remembered. Subject one again says yes sir and several more gunshots are heard. Subject is ordered to abort the test and return. He once again ignores this. He continues on rambling on about the sky being orange and the dirty and the burning ground and that everyone else was dead. He then stops and says I will never reach the stars like this. Camera footage goes out and shrieking is heard as subject screams that he didn't want to but he did. Then the shrieking stops and subject is heard crying and rambling how he understood now but he didn't want to go but he had to. He complained about his helmet and how it was too hot. He begins to plead saying please, please, I was angry, please. Camera footage briefly shows up to show subject sobbing. Everything else appears to be normal except numerous bullet casings as well as identifiable bodies wearing military uniforms are on the ground. Camera feed goes out. Subject continues sobbing until suddenly angrily yelling its wasn't my fault. A voice is heard over the microphone that isn't the subject's. Observers are not able to describe it saying it was too great for words. All it said was all this time and no change. There is no river, there are no stars, not for you. The gates are open for another but closed for you. All feeds cut out. Subject appears the next day which is the shortest known return from SCP-5524. Subject has no memories at all both of this event and their past. Subject has been reported to being a more enjoyable person. All supplies that subject was sent with have disappeared.
SCP-5524 Exploration Log
After the events of SCP-5224-1 the foundation has authorized a MTF to explore SCP-5224. SCP-5224 has returned to its original region of Mexico and Southwestern United States and has returned as a canyon. Phycological effects remain the same.
An MTF group highly experienced with cognitohazards is sent into SCP-5224. They are equipped with sampling kits, comms, cameras, firearms, and a week's worth of provisions. The MTF consists of 6 members.
Upon viewing SCP-5524 the team reports no signs of wanting to enter the canyon. Once entered the entire canyon changes. This effects the camera footage as well unlike other explorations of SCP-5524. The entire team reports seeing the same changes. The changes record that instead of a valley it appears the side of a cliff wall. the river runs across a indent on the cliff where they stood.
