Researcher Gabriel Conduit Beginnings

Gabriel1 made his way to a low-class humanoid interview room for annual mental analysis. It was a clever idea Gabriel's colleague came up with years ago. Gabriel approached the guard and revealed his card, did the security checks, all the fancy stuff. The security on this site has increased since the minor incident that happened 5 years ago. The site administrator really holds a grudge. Gabriel was allowed in and sat in the seat, alone. He had to sit there and be patient while the interviewer processed information in the other room. The processing normally takes 5 minutes, although Gabriel was told by another colleague that he sat for 30 minutes there. It was probably only 10 minutes; she was an impatient one.

"Sorry for the wait" the interviewer apologised as she entered the room "my name is Eve"

"No need to apologise, that was less than a minute. You're getting better" Gabriel responded.

"Thank you"

"Now, let's get on with it shall we. I have an explosive slug that speaks French and eat people when left unattended"

Eve freezes "You what?"

Gabriel laughs "You should see your face"

Eve just stares.

"I'm joking, the slug doesn't explode. It only speaks French, although it is slowly dying"

"What classification has it been given?"

"Nothing, it was discovered yesterday in the hallway by yours truly. I was going to designate it but I found that it was dying, so I just didn't bother"

"Have you considered that there could be more?"

Gabriel frowned "Huh, no I didn't. That is an interesting question"

Eve cleared her throat and glanced at the camera situated behind her in the top corner of the room looking directly at the table.

"I believe we're getting off topic"

"Kind of but not exactly. Although I agree"

Eve paused, "What?"

"Your questions?" Gabriel requested.

Eve opened her briefcase and took out a notepad and pen.

"When did you begin working for the Foundation?"

"That is classified, I don't have clearance to access the date I was recruited"

"Good"

The interview wasn't just an interview, it was a test. Gabriel knew this, because he read his emails. He had to contribute to the memory erasing of someone who obviously didn't read emails and failed the test and got caught accessing classified information that was technically not meant to be given to him.

"Do you have a family?"

"Does a dog count? I'd mention the dog-sitter but he's a civilian who I pay so other than that, nope. Parents obviously don't know about me."

"You'll soon need to get rid of the dog"

"Why?"

"A new regulation will be put into place, apparently someone's dog turned into a robot and turned the agent into napalm. The robot was neutralised, so no dogs"

Gabriel shifted in his seat "Can I just test my dog for anomalous traces and give the all good?"

"You'll have to ask the site administrator"

"Hm"

My dogs not a napalm robot Gabriel thought to himself.

Eve continued, "When is your birthday?"

"I don't have one anymore"

"Watched any good movies lately?"

"Only the ones from the 80's, the locust is a good movie"

This was a code for higher level researchers so they could access certain meetings. The code changes every year and it is randomly selected from a conversation the site admin had at some point. Which isn't secure in Gabriel's opinion.

"What is your ranking in the Mobile Task Force?"

"I'm not MTF, I'm a level 4 researcher"

"How many people are within your research team?"

Gabriel took a moment to count "11"

"Who are these members?"

"Steven Cole, Karen Cole, they actually aren't related believe it or not, Charles… something, Clark Montgomery, Barney Carter….who else…? I'm horrible with names. I'm sorry. Kate Smith, Harry Carpenter, William Garcia, Gabby Harris, Bryan Boardman, Lee Hung"

"Have you taken any amnestic drugs lately?"

Gabriel chuckles "I can't remember if I have"

"What is it that you research, Doctor Conduit?"

"I research mostly humanoid entities who are having a hard time. One of them called me 'The Therapist' which flattered me. I believe that the easiest way to understand an anomaly is to understand the entity hosting the anomaly"

"How sentimental of you"

Eve wrote down a few more notes then closed the notepad "Thank you for your time. You may leave"

"Thank you, I hope you have a good lunch"

Of course, another code. It was the middle of the night, not a very appropriate time to have lunch.
