SCP XXXX
OBJECT CLASS: Safe
SPECIAL CONTAINMENT PROCEDURES:
SCP 4500 is currently situated in Family Recreation Building within Site-11. It is to be cleaned twice a day with a standard cleaning solution and non-abrasive cloths or sponges. Security checks of SCP-4500’s standalone intranet server are to be done biweekly under the guidance of one (1) Level 2 personnel or as directed by Level 3 personnel or higher [see Addendum 1-43]. All monies accumulated by SCP-4500 are to be collect no less than three times a week and deposited to Site 19’s Family Welfare fund.
Personnel are encouraged to interact with SCP 4500 with the exception of children under the age of thirteen (13) years of age. However, any children under the age of eighteen (18) must be monitored by at least one (1) Level 2 personnel. All personnel, regardless of age, are required to obtain and utilize a personal IC card during usage for the purposes of monitoring results and to avoid abuse of SCP 4500’s anomalous properties. To this end, at no time should the cameras integrated within SCP 4500 be obstructed. Though optional, it is highly recommended that anyone attempting to reproduce anomalous effects wear standard cotton gloves to enhance performance as well as avoid minor injury.
DESCRIPTION: SCP 4500 is a set of two pairs of interconnected RingEdge2 arcade cabinet platforms produced by the Sega Games Corporation. The screens of these devices are circular and support touch-screen inputs however, a series of eight (8) rectangular buttons, surrounding the screens of each device, may be utilized as well. When attached to an adequate power source and activated, these machine run an unlicensed version of a popular rhythm-based game, called MaiMai Gaku Nama.
Much like the original games of the MaiMai series, which the current iteration seems to be based upon; MaiMai Gaku Nama is a game in which the objective is for the player to interact with symbols that appear within the screen of their respective device as the symbols pass a certain point within said screen’s circumference. Players are required to tap circles, slide their hands along indicated paths and tap pairs in unison while keeping in time to musical selections from popular bands and other forms of media, such as the Vocaloid Project and Tohou Project, as well as popular animations.
Upon completion of a selection, the player is graded on their performance with a popular Japanese grading system of F-S, with “S” being the highest evaluation, surpassing even “A”. Derivatives exist within the grading scale, such a “A+” and “SSS”, to mark moderate increases in performance. Improper timing or failing to tap/slide a symbol detracts from a player’s overall performance, resulting in lower evaluations for less accuracy. If a player completes a selection having successfully engaged every symbol, regardless of timing, their performance will also be marked as a “Full Combo”. In addition to this grading scale, there are also several levels of difficulty players may attempt; EASY, BASIC, ADVANCED, EXPERT and MASTER; all of which are accessible to players expect for MASTER, which must be unlocked.
Though presenting no readily apparent anomalous properties itself, the prompts SCP-4500 display on its screens, when followed precisely by a player, form kinetoglyhs which vary in effect and duration depending on the musical selection and level of difficulty, respectively. To date, no abnormal effects have been observed in subjects that have completed selections on the EASY, BASIC, or ADVANCED settings. However, subjects that have achieved a “Full Combo” with a ranking of “SSS” on EXPERT and MASTER difficulties have reported experiencing one of several recurring anomalous effects.
The following is a list of all musical selections currently known to correspond to a kinetoglyph as well as its effect on a performer and approximate duration.
| Musical Selection | Effect | Duration on Expert | Duration of Master |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Parallel Spec” by Gesunokiwamiotome | Subjects experience marked increase in cognitive receptiveness | D-Class subject with low IQ score was given entry-level college material. Subject displayed ability to comprehend and apply content. The effect began to subside after 8 hours however, subject still retained information after testing concluded. | cell-content |
| “Tell Your World” by livetune (feat. Hatsune Miku) | Subject experiences a sudden increase in curiosity esp. for ideas/topics previously deemed unappealing | D-Class performer was presented with several texts on theology. Without instruction, subject immediately began reading texts, asking for simplification and references every so often during the span of 6 hours, stopping only to receive food and relieve herself. Subject immediately lost interest afterwards. | D-Class performer made to watch a recorded lecture proctored by SCP 948 for 12 hours. Subject became engrossed in the topic being discussed, constantly asking for insight and clarification. Subject requested to remain after initial testing. Permission granted. Subject continued to watch for approximately 6 additional hours before slowly falling asleep in her chair. |
| “Jet Monster” by MAGIC OF LIFE | Subject displays the ability to greater withstand the effects of sleep deprivation | Subjects subjugated to sleep-deprivation testing displayed increased cognitive and physical resilience for approximately 12 hours. | Subjects displayed increased resilience for a period of 36 hours. Afterwards, subjects reported feeling no more tired than they would after an average day. |

The kinteoglyphs prompted by SCP 4500 do not appear to cause adverse or long-lasting effects beyond what is listed above. Repeatedly performing one selections noted above will not multiply the duration of a given effect, it instead seems to merely “reset” it. However, it is possible to experience the effects of multiple kinetoglyphs at one time. If fact, it appears that several of these anomalous effects were either specifically chosen or otherwise designed to work in tandem with one another. As noted, several results could not be fully catalogued without risk of cross-contamination from other kinetoglyphic effects.
Though obviously designed for to be utilized and enjoyed by adolescences, testing has concluded that anyone with adequate coordination and reflexes can utilize SCP 4500 to replicate the results of previous tests. Alternatively, one may also simply attempt a selection enough times to memorize entire routines. To date, no negative repercussions have occurred as a result of subjects outright failing to score high enough to pass a given selection; a fact which has alleviated the need for strictly D-Class level testing.
In cases wherein subjects have successfully performed a kinetoglyph through use of SCP 4500 and subsequently experienced its effect, they inevitably wish to repeat and replicate the results, despite lacking knowledge of the true nature of the game. Testing wherein D-Class personnel were denied access to SCP 4500 after a successful performance have proven that this is merely a result of common incentive salience and not a side-effect brought on by SCP 4500 itself.
As mentioned above, SCP-4500 does not exhibit any blatantly obvious anomalous behavior. However, it does seem to possess a certain level of sentience and has demonstrated the ability to repair damage done to its vital components over a span of six to eight hours, in most cases. Testing has proven that, beyond removal of superficial elements, SCP 4500 appears incapable of being completely dismantled by conventional means, even when approached with specialized tools. Furthermore, any attempt made by researchers to access any part of SCP 4500’s code has proven to be extremely difficult as SCP 4500 will shut itself down or, in extreme cases, sabotage several of its own key components to prevent intrusion (ie overclocking, short-circuiting or disabling of cooling systems). Despite this, SCP 4500 does not react negatively or otherwise when being observed or recorded. This has allowed for accurate documentation of its prompts and routines.
In addition, if SCP 4500’s RingEdge2 system is connected to a local access network or given access to the internet, it will function in a similar fashion to its non-anomalous counterparts; recording and displaying records and player data. In this state users are also able to record their performances and upload video logs to a corresponding website, allowing for an even greater degree of data compilation. With approval of three (3) Level 4 personnel, SCP 4500 was attached to a standalone server during testing which allowed for accurate and precise recording of subjects’ performances. All information gathered thus far has been catalogued and transferred to researchers working within Project Marqod, as per instruction of the Department of Kinetography.
Once initial testing had been drawn to a close, SCP 4500 was deemed nonhazardous to Foundation personnel and moved to its current location in Site 11, for long-term observation and study.
DISCOVERY: SCP 4500 was discovered through routine investigation by Foundation personnel imbedded in the population of Japan’s Kanagawa prefecture. After a period of sustained growth in rumors supporting a popular urban legend usually passed amongst the student population of the area, agents were dispatched to the Silk Hat game arcade in Yokosuka. It was there that they discovered SCP 4500 being copiously utilized by adolescent individuals. Initial inspection supported claims of anomalous activity however, it wasn’t until two weeks later that an agent was able to confirm findings firsthand.
Agents quickly removed SCP 4500 from the premises, under the guise of maintenance personnel and questioned the staff of the arcade. Though the manager and her employees provided information without reluctance, none claimed to know exactly when or how the machine begin to operate its current version of software, though several testimonies placed the update time as occurring sometime in the summer of 2015.
Delving deeper, agents approached representatives of the Sega Corporation with queries about SCP 4500’s version of their game. The spokespersons were quick to deny any involvement of Sega with an unofficial and unlicensed iteration of their property, they did mention a possible lead: Sato Shigeki, assistant director in charge of content development for the MaiMai project. However, it was soon disclosed that Shigeki had committed suicide on the 12th of July, two years prior, following the lost of his first son.
