Item #: SCP-4824
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4824 is to be kept in a three-by-three-meter cell, and should be monitored by at least two security personnel at all times. SCP-4824 maintains an average human diet. All staff are to refer to SCP-4824 as either "Dianté" or "Simmons" when speaking to him or in his general proximity.
No one is permitted to speak to SCP-4824 or approach his cell unless they receive permission from a Senior Researcher, the director of Site-64, or a member of the O5 Council, given the nature of his abilities.
Description: SCP-4824 appears to be a thin, black male in his mid-20s, standing around 172cm (5’8) and weighing 60kg (132lbs), who was formerly known as Dianté Simmons. Some personnel have also dubbed him “The Bye Bye Man,” after the 2017 film of the same name.
On 10/8/2018, the Foundation discovered, through several social media posts, that people who entered a department store in ███████████, Iowa found themselves unable to recall any events within a certain timeframe. Field Agents Zhou and Legrande were deployed from Site-64 and sent in undercover to determine whether or not the store contained any anomalies. After a few hours of searching, Agent Legrande was able to determine that Simmons was the source of the problem after Zhou had a short conversation with him and was unable to recall any events that had happened within the hour. SCP-4824 was brought back to Site-64 with the agents, where he remains to this day.
Interview 4824.1
Time: 12:04PM
10/11/2018Description: Interview was conducted two days after originally captured. Interview would have been conducted sooner, but a breach made by SCP-████ prevented this.
[BEGIN LOG]
Dr. Chakrabarti: I’m sorry that we’ve had to keep you in these conditions. It seems that you had no prior criminal record, so I’d assume you aren’t used to a cell.
SCP-4824: Ah, it’s alright. This place ain't so bad. At least the food’s free.
Dr. Chakrabarti: Glad to hear that you're feeling alright. Now, can I ask where you’re from, originally? Did you grow up in Iowa?
SCP-4824: I grew up in Alabama. Small town. ████████.
Dr. Chakrabarti: And when did you move to ███████████?
SCP-4824: Something like May 2017, I think? First time I’d really been too far up north. They made fun of the way I talk.
Dr. Chakrabarti: How did you get the job at ███████, if no one can remember speaking to you? That is a consequence of your…gift, correct? No one can ever remember who you are?
SCP-4824: They can. I just can’t say goodbye to them. Figured that out when I was a kid.
Dr. Chakrabarti: You’ve known about this ability since you were a child? Has anyone else known?
SCP-4824: Naw. I was always too afraid I’d end up somewhere like this. I mean, I guess I slipped up a couple times, but no one ever caught on. It wasn't too hard though. Just learned to never say goodbye to anybody.
Dr. Chakrabarti: Did anyone ever ask you why you never said goodbye? What did you say to them?
SCP-4824: Told them I just wasn't big on goodbyes. Made up this story about this rough experience in my past.
Dr. Chakrabarti: Why did you start saying goodbye to people, when you became a greeter?
SCP-4824: They said I needed to be more friendly to people. That it was part of the job. Mr. ██████████ was real adamant about it.
Dr. Chakrabarti: Did you ever consider leaving and getting another job?
SCP-4824: I did, but not everybody is fortunate enough to be able to just up and leave a job they don't like.
Dr. Chakrabarti: I understand.
SCP-4824: Yeah. You got anything else for me?
Dr. Chakrabarti: No. Thank you, 4824.
SCP-4824: You can call me Dianté, ma’am. I don’t mind.
Dr. Chakrabarti: I appreciate it, but I'd prefer not to.
SCP-4824: (nods)[END LOG]
Addendum 4824-01: Through extensive research conducted by Dr. Blake and Dr. Chakrabarti, including a number of interviews with SCP-4824, the Foundation has learned more about the nature of Simmons' abilities. Anyone who has a conversation with the Simmons can potentially have their short-term memory cleared, leaving them unable to recall any events within a certain time frame. The smallest possible time frame is a little under five minutes. There seem to be no permanent neurological effects from conversing with SCP-4824, though the initial clearing of the victim’s memory stuns them for a period of thirty seconds or so, rendering them effectively unconscious.
While Simmons’ ability does seem to have a great deal of utility, if used effectively, it is limited. For one, a person has to actually speak to SCP-4824 for it to even be possible for him to activate it, and he has to utter some sort of phrase that indicates that the conversation is over. Words and phrases such as “goodbye,” “ciao,” and “talk to you later,” have all been shown to serve this purpose. Additionally, the ability is limited because it is verbal. This is why SCP-4824 has been seen giving a simple nod to say goodbye when he does not want to use his ability.
Currently, it does not seem as though Simmons has any control over how much of a person’s memory is cleared. Further testing is needed.
Additionally, Dr. Chakrabarti has recently conducted tests to see if hearing recordings of SCP-4824 have the same effect on individuals. These tests have proven that, in order for the effect to be triggered, the words must come directly from 4824. However, if one is speaking to 4824 through a comms system, the effect can still be triggered, as long as the person hears the SCP say one of the trigger words/phrases.
Interview 4824.14
Time: 2:02 PM
11/13/2019Description: Junior Researcher Dr. Blake convinced Dr. Chakrabarti to let him have a chance to speak with SCP-4824. Chakrabarti agreed, given that she could witness the interview from behind the one-way glass in the interrogation room.
[BEGIN LOG]
Dr. Blake: How are you doing today, Dianté?
SCP-4824: I'm doing just fine, doctor. And how about yourself?
Dr. Blake: Oh, I'm feeling alright.
SCP-4824: Do you mind if I ask you something?
Dr. Blake: Yes, of course.
SCP-4824: Dr. Chakrabarti still won't call me by my name. She got something against me?
Dr. Blake: No, no, she doesn’t. Dr. Chakrabarti is just more…serious about her work than most.
SCP-4824: I get where you're coming from. It just rubs me the wrong way, ya know?
Dr. Blake: Don't worry. I'll talk to her about it.
SCP-4824: Alright. I appreciate that.
There is a long pause
Dr. Blake: Diante, we want to try to see if we can put your ability to use. Would you mind that?
SCP-4824: What did you mean by use?
Dr. Blake: Simple things, at least to start. We want to see if you can make people forget certain things that they should forget. Like trauma, for instance.
SCP-4824: I mean, I can't make people forget that far.
Dr. Blake: Oh yes, we understand that. We're talking about recent trauma.
SCP-4824: I get where you're coming from now, doctor.
Dr. Blake: But we would also like to test how far back you can make people forget as well. Think you can talk to somebody for a few hours?
SCP-4824: Ah, yeah, of course. Mama used to say I could talk peoples' ears off.
Dr. Blake: That's great. That'll definitely have its uses.
SCP-4824: When do y'all want to start?
Dr. Blake: We can try to get things started within the coming week.
SCP-4824: Sounds like a plan to me.
Dr. Blake: Thank you, Diante. We'll talk again soon.
SCP-4824: (nods)
[END LOG]
Addendum 4824-02: Testing to see the highest possible time frame of memory loss is still ongoing. One D-Class, who had a conversation with Simmons that lasted approximately 1 hour and 6 minutes, could not remember any of the events that took place over approximately the last 16 hours. This included forgetting some neurological and emotional trauma the D-Class received while participating in research on SCP-███. Dr. Blake has suggested that this may make SCP-4824 useful, in that he could be used to “heal” some personnel who have experienced recent trauma. SCP-4824 could also potentially be used for debriefs, saving the Foundation resources by acting as a replacement for amnestics, in certain cases. In order for this to work, however, SCP-4824 would have to be compliant.
Experiment 4824.5B
Time: 3:17 PM
12/6/2019Description: Transcript recorded here is approximately 45 minutes into a conversation that SCP-4824 had with Dr. Chakrabarti after she had experienced psychological distress while interviewing SCP-████. As the conversation went on, Chakrabarti became more and more open to SCP-4824, who seemed to be emotionally supportive.
[BEGIN LOG]
SCP-4824: No, no, I definitely get you mean. My parents were real rough on me too.
Dr. Chakrabarti: I mean, it ultimately pushed me to work harder, so I'm kind of grateful for it, in a way.
SCP-4824: It's hard to separate the good from the bad, when it comes to things like that. Just try not to let the good completely justify the bad.
Dr. Chakrabarti: Oh, we didn’t? And look where that got us. Look where trusting you got us. (Looking over her shoulder) Right, Blake?
SCP-4824: Goodbye.
Dr. Chakrabarti proceeds to stare blankly at SCP-4824, completely motionless. Drool begins to collect on the table, her mouth agape. This goes on for about half a minute. During this time, two security personnel enter the room, weapons raised.
Dr. Blake: Mr. Simmons, what do you think you’re doing?
SCP-4824: You and Chakrabarti want to study me, right? Why not get a hands-on lesson?
Dr. Chakrabarti: (coming to) 4824? Wait, where’s Blake?
Dr. Blake: It’s alright, Am—
SCP-4824: See ya, Dr. Blake. It was fun while it lasted.
Dr. Blake remains silent
Dr. Chakrabarti: (to 4824) You asshole! Are you seriously trying to pull this shit on us right—
SCP-4824: (interrupting) Talk to you later, Amna.
Dr. Chakrabarti goes back into a trance-like state. The two security personnel proceed to string her arms over their shoulders and pick her up out of the chair. They then carry her out of the interrogation room, their guns still trained on SCP-4824. The SCP does not move.
[END LOG]
Closing Statement: Though conversations with SCP-4824 can be lengthy, Researchers should be careful about revealing any personal information to SCP-4824. Revealing information about the Foundation and its inner workings to SCP-4824 is strictly prohibited.
Addendum 4824-03: The director of Site-64 has asked all researchers to be mindful of the extent of SCP-4824's abilities, and to report any signs of 4824's powers growing in strength.
Addendum 4824-04: The Site Director has requested to transfer SCP-4824 to a more secure facility, given the possibility that the Chaos Insurgency, the Serpent's Hand, or another group of interest could try to breach his containment and attempt to use him for their own purposes.
Addendum 4824-05: O5-█ has granted the Site Director's request. SCP-4824 will be transferred to Site-██ sometime in the coming weeks.
