Item #: SCP-4575 Maximus 'Max' Stray
Object Class: Euclid Safe
Threat Level: Yellow N/A
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4575 is to be contained in a Standard Secure Humanoid Containment Chamber. Currently, SCP-4575 is contained in the High Risk Containment Division on the 26th floor in Section D of Site-88. The cell is to be kept at a distance of 60 meters from all other occupied spaces due to SCP-4575's proximity effects. This chamber is to be outfitted with one (1) bed. No personnel are permitted to approach SCP-4575's containment chamber under any circumstances.
Special Containment Procedures Update: After cross-testing between SCP-4575 and SCP-4574 and careful consideration from the research teams assigned to each subject, it was concluded that the two SCP's would be easier to contain together rather than separately due to SCP-4574's effect on SCP-4575 (See Addendum 4574.2 Test Log 4574-001). As of December ██, 199█, SCP-4575 shares a similarly outfitted Standard Secure Humanoid Containment Chamber with SCP-4574 fit to hold both SCP's comfortably. This containment chamber is to be kept at a distance of 60 meters from all other occupied spaces due to SCP-4575's and SCP-4574's proximity effects. This arrangement is to be considered permanent unless a sufficient reason to end the arrangement comes up.
Special Containment Procedures Update 2: Due to the neutralization of SCP-4574 on August ██, 199█ during the containment breach at Site-88 and the subsequent apparent loss of SCP-4575's anomalous abilities that occurred as a result, SCP-4575 is to be contained in a Standard Humanoid Containment Chamber. Currently, SCP-4575 is contained in the Low Risk Containment Division on the 7th floor in Section C of Site-88.
This chamber is to be outfitted to suit the basic needs of an average human male, and must include one (1) of each of the following at the very least: a bed, a dresser, a nightstand, a lamp, a shower, a toilet, and a sink. Other amenities such as decor, clothes, books, movies, and other items may be supplied at the request of SCP-4575 as long as the requested item(s) in question are approved by the team overlooking the subjects containment. SCP-4575's containment chamber is also the home of one (1) of the two (2) remaining instances of SCP-4574-1 left behind by SCP-4574 after its neutralization.
For all intents and purposes, SCP-4575 is to be treated as a human until further notice and referred to as 'Max' or 'Maximus' due to its current lack of anomalous abilities along with there being no reason to believe that these abilities will return. While it is still officially categorized as one, treating SCP-4575 as an SCP or less than human is discouraged. It is free to roam the common areas of the facility as well as the cafeteria, and may interact with staff if it pleases.
Special Containment Procedures Update 3: Agent Max Stray has been given his own private quarters in Section B of Site-88, and may decorate it as he pleases. His quarters is also the home of one (1) of the two (2) remaining instances of SCP-4574-1 left behind by SCP-4574 after its neutralization.
Description: SCP-4575, known to SCP-4574 as 'Max', is virtually indistinguishable from a young human male in his early twenties in both appearance and on the genetic level (Although there are some irregularities that have yet to be identified), and appears to be of Caucasian descent, possessing brown hair and grey eyes. SCP-4575 is part of a group of entities referred to by themselves as 'Emotians', known to have initially been made up of 6 similar beings, including itself. Despite apparently coming into existence at the same time and sharing many similarities, none of these entities contained within the Foundation are genetically related. SCP-4575 remains curled up in the fetal position and sobs hysterically at all times. SCP-4575 has never been observed to do anything other than this while in solitary containment.
SCP-4575 has strong cognitohazardous effects and seems to emit a very depressing and cold aura to any who are less than 50 meters away from it. This radius is referred to as the 'Dark Zone'. This feeling grows remarkably more concentrated the closer subjects get to SCP-4575, with subjects standing 30 meters away reporting feeling like they couldn't remember what happiness felt like, feeling paranoid and fearful, and not wanting to get any closer. This radius is referred to as the 'Fear Zone'. Again, this feeling grows substantially until subjects reach a distance of 10 meters, at which point most are unable to remain on their feet and fall to the ground, curl up, and sob uncontrollably. Approaching affected individuals causes extreme defensive hostility. This radius is referred to as the 'Misery Zone'. Complete mental breakdowns occur when subjects reach any distance within 5 meters of SCP-4575. This radius is referred to as the 'Break Zone'. Subjects afflicted by these effects are known to carry the feelings with them for weeks on end after encounters, with those who entered the 'Misery Zone' or closer showing no signs of natural recovery, and will actively engage in self-harming or suicidal behaviors.
It is unknown what would happen if one were to be touched by SCP-4575, as testing into this matter was deemed unnecessary. When questioned about these effects, SCP-4575 doesn't seem to know how are why they are caused, but becomes extremely depressed. SCP-4575 is unable to halt these effects of its own free will like SCP-4574 can. SCP-4575 appears to despise its abilities and effects, and holds a strong sense of contempt towards itself due to possessing them.
It is believed that SCP-4575 is capable of a similar type of 'reincarnation' to that of SCP-4574 if neutralized, although this has never been observed nor confirmed by SCP-4575 itself, however it has SCP-4574 has claimed that it occurred in the past. Going off of this, after being neutralized and subsequently reincarnated, SCP-4575 would presumably take on the appearance of a roughly 6 year old version of itself, and would grow at about twice the speed of an average human until it reaches the equivalent of its late teens. Upon reaching this age, its growth slows dramatically to a quarter of the rate of an average human being until it reaches the physical appearance of a man in his mid thirties, at which point it will cease to age entirely. This is all speculation based on information provided by SCP-4574, though, as SCP-4575 seems almost entirely ignorant to such abilities besides the fact that it ages slowly.
Description Update 1: After being moved to shared containment with SCP-4574, SCP-4575's proximity effects ceases semi-permanently and it is able to function similarly to an average human being. While in this state, SCP-4575 is still considerably glum most of the time, but is known to be observed laughing and being generally happy on a fairly frequent basis. SCP-4575, while not having a need for nutrients, enjoys eating alongside SCP-4574 whenever it chooses to eat. However, even when exposed to SCP-4574, SCP-4575 is prone to depressive episodes in which it will act similarly to how it does when contained alone. These episodes have been known to be as short as 30 minutes or as long as several hours, and are the only times when contained alongside SCP-4574 in which SCP-4575's proximity effects are recorded being active.
Description Update 2: SCP-4575 is indistinguishable from a human male in his twenties in every way. As of now, SCP-4575 is considered a normal human being, although it remains in Foundation custody due to the lack of understanding surrounding his current state. It appears to be of Caucasian descent with brown hair and green eyes. SCP-4575 previously suffered from clinical depression after the neutralization of SCP-4574 on August ██, 199█ during the containment breach at Site-88, however after being exposed to SCP-999 for a second time it has since been cured of this ailment, though it still mourns the loss. SCP-4575 prefers to be referred to as 'Max', and personnel are encouraged to use this name rather than its designation number for the time being.
Description Update 3: After it was officially confirmed that Max no longer possesses any trace of anomalous abilities, he has been reclassified as a human, given the surname Stray, and, at his request, began training to become an MTF Agent. As of April ██, 200█, he is a member of Mobile Task Force Epsilon-6.
Addendum 4575.1: Discovery and Capture
SCP-4575 was discovered on August ██, 199█, living in a farmhouse in a remote part of Wyoming, USA far from any neighboring farms or cities, the nearest city being [REDACTED] nearly 100 kilometers away. Subject was found by Mobile Task Force Epsilon-6 after the Foundation was tipped off to a supposed 'spiritual healer' who could apparently lift any mental burden off of the shoulders of troubled individuals.
When personnel located the farmhouse and were met with SCP-4574's proximity effects when they approached, they entered the building and found the subject eating dinner alongside SCP-4575. After SCP-4574 was tranquilized during its assault on Epsilon-6, SCP-4575 entered a depressive state, at which point its proximity effects activated. A further 4 members were temporarily incapacitated by SCP-4575's effects before it was also tranquilized moments later, and the two were transferred to Site-88 shortly thereafter.
The following interview was carried out by Dr. Nicole Kyler with the assistance of SCP-4574 a few days after SCP-4575 was brought to Site-88 and testing between the two entities determined that SCP-4574's proximity effects could interfere with SCP-4575's proximity effects, allowing for personnel to interact with SCP-4575.
Interviewed: SCP-4575
Interviewer: Dr. Nicole Kyler, assisted by SCP-4574
Carried out: September ██, 199█, 0800 hours
<BEGIN LOG>
Dr. Kyler: Well, let's begin then, shall we? My name is Doctor Kyler. How are you feeling, Four-Five-Seven-Five?
(SCP-4575 looks apprehensive)
SCP-4574: It's okay, Max. These people aren't trying to hurt us, you can talk to her.
SCP-4575: (Sighs) Fine, I guess. More than a little shaken up, though…
Dr. Kyler: And why is that? Do you feel like you've been treated poorly?
(SCP-4575 looks at SCP-4574 for a moment)
SCP-4575: My living situation has not been the greatest…
Dr. Kyler: Are you referring to the containment chamber itself? Or the fact that you have been separated from SCP-Four-Five-Seven-Four?
SCP-4575: The separation, mostly… And please don't refer to her by that stupid number, her name is Joy…
Dr. Kyler: I'm sorry, but I cannot oblige by that request, I have a protocol to follow. Is this because of SCP-Four-Five-Seven-Four's ability to allow you to function normally?
(SCP-4575 appears annoyed)
SCP-4575: I guess so…
Dr. Kyler: You guess so?
SCP-4575: Well, I don't exactly like suddenly being separated from the person who has been there for me nearly my entire life, either…
(Dr. Kyler seems dispirited by this statement)
Dr. Kyler: Ah, yes, that does sound unpleasant. Unfortunately, I didn't have any say in the matter, but depending on the outcome of this interview we may have a case for shared containment.
SCP-4575: Alright, what do you need me to tell you, then?
Dr. Kyler: Well, let's start simple. Where did you come from?
SCP-4575: I don't know…
Dr. Kyler: Alright then. What can you tell me about your abilities?
SCP-4575: I make people sad, and I age slower than normal people…
Dr. Kyler: Yes, that much has been made apparent. Can you give any specifics?
SCP-4575: I don't know the specifics…
Dr. Kyler: (Sighs) Very well, can you at least tell us your intentions? Do you have any ill will towards us?
SCP-4575: I just want to be allowed to stay with Joy… I don't care about this 'Foundation' place… If you don't plan to hurt Joy and are willing to keep us together, I won't have any problems…
Dr. Kyler: Are you implying that if we hurt SCP-Four-Five-Seven-Four or didn't grant this request, you would be hostile towards us?
SCP-4575: To an extent…
Dr. Kyler: Do you possess any abilities that would cause a threat to us besides your seemingly latent ability to cause depressive breakdowns in anyone who gets near you?
SCP-4575: No…
Dr. Kyler: No? You are different than SCP-Four-Five-Seven-Four in that respect, then?
SCP-4575: I'm pretty much the same as a normal person, yeah. Whenever Joy is around me, at least…
Dr. Kyler: Good to know. Is there any other information you think would be helpful to us in regards to understanding you?
SCP-4575: Not really…
Dr. Kyler: Alright, that was simple enough. Four-Five-Seven-Four, please go with the guards to escort Four-Five-Seven-Five back to its containment chamber. They will take you back to yours afterwords. This interview is now concluded. You will be informed about any updates regarding visitations or shared containment at a later date.
(SCP-4574 nods, SCP-4575 becomes visibly depressed)
<END LOG>
Closing Statement: As far as we can tell, the only ability that SCP-4575 possesses is its proximity effects, very much unlike SCP-4574. It is unclear if this fact is to be considered the truth, however it is assumed that this will be confirmed when testing on the subject begins. No other useful information was received from this interview.
Addendum 4575.2: Test Logs
The following is a list of tests carried out by Dr. Nicole Kyler and Dr. Keaton Alderson to determine the properties and capabilities of SCP-4575's abilities.
Personnel Overseeing Test: Dr. Nicole Kyler, Dr. Keaton Alderson, Dr. Martin Weaver, Dr. Edmund Jesko
Main Subject: SCP-4575
Test Subject(s): SCP-4574
Date of Test: September ██, 199█, 0700 hours
Objective: To determine if SCP-4574's abilities can calm SCP-4575 and put it in a normal mental state.
Test Proceedings: Once introduced to a recently awakened SCP-4575's containment chamber, SCP-4574 rushed towards SCP-4575 and embraced it, causing it to immediately cease it's inconsolable sobbing. The two then moved to the bed in the chamber and sat down, talking for a long while maintaining physical contact (Mainly hugging or holding hands).
Once separated, while SCP-4575 seemed a little depressed, it did not return to its previous state and personnel who approached the subject only seemed to feel glum, a feeling which dissipated after a half hour of separation from SCP-4575. The subject remained like this for roughly a day after being separated from SCP-4574 before once again entering its neutral manic depressive state.
Findings: This test proved SCP-4574's claims about being able to improve SCP-4575's mental state and interfere with its proximity effects, although any of the Mobile Task Force Epsilon-6 agents present for the capture and containment of the entities could already attest to this. A request for shared containment between the two participating entities has been submitted and is awaiting approval.
Test Log Edit: The shared containment request has been approved as of November ██, 199█
Addendum 4575.3: Site-88 Containment Breach Incident [August ██, 199█]
After SCP-4574 was released from containment by Dr. Edmund Jesko and Agent Rickard during the catastrohpic containment breach on August ██, 199█, SCP-4575 followed the entity and was nearby when SCP-4574 and SCP-4576 clashed. After SCP-4576 was neutralized by SCP-4574, SCP-4575 made it to SCP-4574's side before it too succumbed to its injuries. SCP-4575 was found clutching SCP-4574's corpse and sobbing in the aftermath of the breach.
A few days after this incident, SCP-4575 was found to no longer possess any traces of anomalous effects or abilities. The research team didn't notice this change until SCP-4575 fell unconscious from exhaustion after nearly two days of resuming what the team thought was its regular anomalous behavior.
The following interview regarding this event and the subsequent changes that SCP-4575 went through afterwards was carried out by Dr. Keaton Alderson.
Interviewed: SCP-4575
Interviewer: Dr. Keaton Alderson
Carried out: September ██, 199█, 0800 hours
<BEGIN LOG>
Dr. Alderson: How do you feel, Four-Five-Seven-Five?
SCP-4575: I… I don't know… Different, but… I still feel the same unending sadness…
Dr. Alderson: Do you believe this to be anomalous in nature? Or might it simply be the result of the loss you have suffered?
SCP-4575: I d-don't know…
(SCP-4575 starts crying again and Dr. Alderson attempts to console it. The interview resumes a few minutes later)
Dr. Alderson: Do you know why you have lost your anomalous effects and abilities?
SCP-4575: N-no… I… I just… I h-held Joy in m-my arms… A-and when… W-when she died… I f-felt this… This r-rush going through m-my body…
(SCP-4575 tries to calm itself down)
Dr. Alderson: I see. In an interview with SCP-Four-Five-Seven-Four, it described a similar event occurring when another one of your kind, 'Love', died in its arms. Do you believe that this may be what happened to you, as well?
SCP-4575: M-maybe… P-probably… I-I don't know…
Dr. Alderson: Alright. Now, I know it may be hard to talk about, so please take a moment to compose yourself if necessary before answering. Do you know how exactly SCP-Four-Five-Seven-Four managed to neutralize SCP-Four-Five-Seven-Six? There seemed to be some sort of explosion, as the camera's were obscured and damaged by a bright light. Upon investigating the scene, pieces of SCP-Four-Five-Seven-Six were found splattered on just about every surface in the room.
(SCP-4575 takes a few deep breathes before trying to speak again)
SCP-4575: I… I'm not sure… By the time I got there, I just saw Joy… She was clinging to him as he t-tore her open… Then his chest suddenly started expanding and… He just burst open… It was too bright to look at, but all I saw was light… It was kind of like those spheres she made… A-after that, well… You know the rest…
Dr. Alderson: Do you think SCP-Four-Five-Seven-Four may have utilized its energy spheres as an offensive weapon? We were under the impression that they were a very gentle force.
SCP-4575: I don't know, how about you create a small sun in your chest and see how you end up..?
(Neither speak for a few moments)
Dr. Alderson: Okay, I see your point. However, if that was all it took to neutralize SCP-Four-Five-Seven-Six, why did SCP-Four-Five-Seven-Four not do this earlier? It had gone on record multiple times making its desire to have SCP-Four-Five-Seven-Six neutralized very clear before this incident.
SCP-4575: She wanted to, but it would have killed her… She didn't think of it soon enough… She had already created all of those other energy spheres in order to keep him imprisoned before trying to kill him… She didn't want to leave me alone, so she chose to keep him imprisoned when nothing else worked… But she d-died anyways in the end… A-and now… I have nothing…
Dr. Alderson: I… I'm sorry. I think that should be enough for the report. You'll be moved to a new containment chamber soon enough once we figure out what to do with you. This is a very peculiar situation, so it may take some time. Do you have any questions before I conclude the interview?
(SCP-4575 doesn't respond immediately)
SCP-4575: Why didn't you people try to kill him..? You promised Joy that you would, but you never did… Why? What merit was there in keeping it alive? What
Dr. Alderson: I wish I had the answer, Four-Five-Seven-Five. I agree that it should have been neutralized at the earliest opportunity, but the council saw fit to keep it alive. There must have been a reason, but I couldn't tell you even if I knew. I am truly sorry. I can assure you, though, that they are surely regretting their decision. This event has been one of the darkest in Foundation history, and will certainly influence their future decisions.
(SCP-4575 remains silent for a moment)
SCP-4575: Is there no way to bring her back..? You must have something sealed away in this Foundation that can revive her, right..?
Dr. Alderson: (Takes a deep breath) Even if we did possess such a thing, I doubt any of us would be able to convince the higher-ups to allow us to use it for such a purpose. It might not be my place to say this, but you need to accept that SCP-Four-Five-Seven-Four is gone.
(SCP-4575 looks at the floor and remains silent)
Dr. Alderson: If that is all, then this interview is now concluded. Thank you for your time, Four-Five-Seven-Five. You'll hear from somebody soon.
<END LOG>
Closing Statement: As of now, it seems as if SCP-4575 has lost all anomalous properties. What will happen to it from here on out will be discussed, but I believe that for the sake of convenience, SCP-4575 should be given an opportunity to interact with SCP-999 once more in order to cure the current depressive state it is in.
Regarding the containment breach incident, some vague details provided by SCP-4575 about how SCP-4574 managed to neutralize SCP-4576 more or less revealed the most likely answer to be that SCP-4576 was blown apart by SCP-4574 creating an instance of SCP-4574-1 in it's chest.
Addendum 4575.4: Requests
After the loss of its anomalous properties, Site Director Dr. Phillip Foster has seen fit to allow SCP-4575 to make requests for things it would like in order to make its life more comfortable.
- Request Log 4575-001
- Request Log 4575-002
- Request Log 4575-003
- Request Log 4575-004
- Request Log 4575-005
Date of Request: January ██, 199█
Request: A few changes of clothes, with a preference for flannel shirts.
Response: Approved.
Addendum 4575.5: End Log
After careful consideration, it was decided by Site Director Dr. Phillip Foster that all personnel should treat SCP-4575 as a human being and to be allowed some small privileges, such as being referred to by his preferred name of Max, being given a new containment chamber suited to his new needs, as well as the freedom to roam the common areas of the facility. Following official reclassification, SCP-4575 will likely be amnestized and reintroduced into society.
In the meantime, it has been given the opportunity to once again interact with SCP-999 in order to cure its clinical depression due to the events of the Site-88 containment breach incident, and is adapting to normal life in the facility fairly well.
