SCP-049

SCP-049.

Item #: SCP-9999

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-9999 is to be stored within 32 glass vials in a vacuum sealed steel container located in the bio-hazard storage facility located at site-66. The only entrance to the container must be a multi-stage airlock. No ventilation or drainage of any kind can connect to the container. Any personnel entering the containment area must be wearing a minimum of a grade 5 EV suit with independent respiratory tanks. On a bi-weekly basis, the vials containing SCP-9999 must be checked for cracks and leaks. If a leak is discovered, all instances of SCP-9999 are to be transferred to a nearby containment area with similar specifications while the primary container is cleansed using a combination of ultraviolet light and temperatures exceeding 451° Centigrade.

If any personnel is contaminated by SCP-9999, protocol 87-Zulu is to be followed.

Testing of SCP-9999 on any sentient organism is prohibited without approval by the site director. Any testing of the substance is to be carried out in a sealed room without ventilation or drainage.

Description:

SCP-9999 is a powerful hallucinogen with temporal distortion properties. Anyone under the influence of SCP-9999 will begin reporting more distant visions of reality than the current point in time. Thes

Addendum 9999.1: Discovery

SCP-9999 was discovered by Dr. █████ ███████, working at the RemCorp facility in Nicholasville, Kentucky on 9/2/20██. Research notes retrieved in the initial investigation revealed that the substance was derived from the fruit body of Psylocibe Cubenis, more commonly known as the psilocybin mushroom. Testing at the facility continued for 17 days until a test subject left the facility and caught the attention of Foundation personnel, who quarantined all test RemCorp test subjects, and extracted all remaining instances of SCP-9999 from the facility.

Addendum 9999.2: Progression of Contamination

Following contamination by SCP-9999, all instances of SCP-9999-1 have been noted to follow the same general progression.

1. "Psychedelic phase" - First experienced from 30 minutes to 1 hour after exposure, subject will report seeing patterns and more highly saturated colors, not unlike exposure to LSD or unaltered psilocybin mushrooms. This phase does not seem to feature any mild-altering affects, only visual and auditory distortions.
2. "Mild temporal phase" - Between 1 and 2 hours after initial hallucinations begin, subject will report seeing events they have experienced in the past with vivid and verifiable detail. Events seen typically begin close to contamination, such as the last meal that the subject had. Within an hour, however, the subject will begin seeing further back, again seeing past events both vivid and verifiable. Many subjects exposed to SCP-9999 will report re-experiencing their own birth, and even events which happened to their mother while they were in the womb.
3. "First psychosis phase" - After 2 hours in the second phase of contamination, the subject will enter a raging psychosis. Any speech will be unintelligible, and brain scans of subjects in this phase universally show heightened activity in the pain centers of the brain, as well as in the occipital lobe where visual senses are processed. This phase has been noted to last at most 15 minutes.
4. "Major temporal phase" - Following the end of the third phase, the subject will briefly come back to coherence before reporting events that happened either before their lifetime, or have yet to happen entirely. Notable examples include the signing of the Magna Carta, the crucifixion of St. Peter, and the formation of the moon. As with the mild temporal phase, the events seen become more distant from the current time as the effects of SCP-9999 continue.
5. "Second psychosis phase" - Abruptly at a random time following the start of the fourth phase, the subject will stop responding to all sensory input. After some time of seeing events supposedly occurring more and more distant into the future, the subject will begin screaming as if exposed to brutal pain, although brain scans at this phase show that the subject does not actually experience any pain. The subject will again begin speaking gibberish, however some intelligible language will be included. The only noted common phrase among all subjects is "█████ ██ ██████". Any attempts to converse with the subject on the meaning of said phrase, or understand what the subject saw has proven futile. Subjects in this phase have routinely demonstrated extreme suicidal tendencies, including bashing their own head against any available surface.
6. "Recovery" - Should the subject survive the second psychosis phase, they will experience a "come down" effect. The abrupt return to reality has been noted to induce headaches, nausea, and confusion regarding the subject's location and identity. After approximately 2-3 days, the subject will be fully aware of reality, including their identity, but will be largely unable to recall anything beyond the first psychosis phase. Many subjects have reported long-term symptoms similar to combat induced PTSD, although triggers for this condition remain unknown.

Addendum 9999.3: Interview with Phase 4 SCP-9999-1

Interviewer: Dr. Wharl, Site 66
Interviewee: D-889542-1, under influence of SCP-9999

[BEGIN LOG]
Dr. Wharl: So tell me now, what do you see?
D-889542-1: Like, the cosmos. But we're there, through it all. People. Us.
Dr. Wharl: Do you see anyone you recognize specifically, or is it just humans in general?
D-889542-1: Humans in general I guess? They look like us but it can't be, all the things they're using. Like, they have actual spaceships, going to actual stars. It can't be anyone here right now.
Dr. Wharl: (Aside) By what he just said and what we have in the basement at Site-19, this could have happened last week.
D-889542-1: There's something else too. It's on like an edge, I can't make out what it is though but it's huge.
Dr. Wharl: Can you focus on it? Is there anything else about it you can describe?
D-889542-1: I'm not sure if I have a choice, everything seems to be sorta zooming towards it.
Dr. Wharl: Good. When you can, describe it to me.
D-889542-1: (Abruptly starts screaming)
Dr. Wharl: (Aside) Dammit, he's gone phase 5. Can we get a team in here to wrap up 87-Zulu? I think we're done here.
