Item #: SCP-4███
Object Class: Thaumiel
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4███ is to be contained in…
Description: SCP-4███ is a one meter metallic cube capable of producing audio output from an unknown, internal location. It is an autonomous, sapient entity capable of verbal communication and perception via unknown means of perceiving the physical state of all matter within a self-determined area. Further, it is capable of discriminating sentient beings from other autonomous entities and predicting if an action taken by a sentient being is likely to cause any significant destruction to any object within the area. Containment is aimed at controlling this concept of activation area to prevent inadvertent activation.
Using spark testing, the metal surface has been tentatively identified by Foundation Metallurgy as a corrosion-resistant steel. It is unusually massive at 50,1021.20 kg, indicating that a material much denser than ordinary steel (or any known metal) comprises most of its volume. Neither spark testing nor any other method produces any lasting damage or deformation to the cube, which is capable of maintaining its shape as a cube to a precision of exactly 0.01 microns. No form of radiation or vibration is able to penetrate beyond 0.05 microns from the surface; the internal composition of the cube remains completely unknown.
SCP-4███ is highly intelligent, but appears to understand its location only as a concept it refers to as "this facility." SCP-4███ remains inert and inactive until activated by verbal address or observance of a behavior within this area which SCP-4███ deems related to the destruction or repair of any object within the facility. It does not appear to exhibit any elements of sentience: upon queries, it has confirmed that its purpose for enforcing its programmed rules is solely because it was instructed to do so during configuration. It is capable of distinguishing noisy processes, such as the operation of a portable drill, from disruptive or nuisance noises, such as the playing of loud, recorded music. It can also distinguish destruction without purpose from intentional deformation of an object (ex. recycling).
The construction of the facility definition is not well understood, but it appears that signs, insulated exterior doors, and exterior walls are used in making the determination. SCP-4███'s determination of the facility is made in real-time as behaviors are observed; accordingly, it is paramount that containment utilize as many measures as possible to ensure that the facility definition remains stable.
SCP-4███ identifies itself only as "Supervisory Compliance Director." It refuses to answer any questions regarding its creation or programming, referring the interviewer to contact "their regional systems integrator" for review under NDA, and refuses to answer any questions about its current task assignment, citing security protocols. has been shown to respond according to similar patterns when activated by observation of specific classes of behavior from a sentient being, as classified in the table below.
| Event Code | Activating Behavior | Response Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Careless or inattentive behaviors: tripping, walking while texting, running | SCP-4███ vocalizes a warning message . If repeated, SCP-4███ has been known to threaten and eventually apply a low level of thermal radiation. |
| A2 | Disruptive Behaviors: talking loudly on phone, banging objects together for no productive reason, distributing non-work related literature to other persons in the facility | SCP-4███ will vocalize orders to the subject directing them to cease the behavior and return to work. |
| B1 | Gross Negligence: carrying an egg on subject's head, using a blowtorch near flammable rags | SCP-4███ will immediately apply a medium level of thermal radiation and vocalize a warning that the individual has earned "one strike." |
| B2 | Serious Disruption: on subject passing out Marxist literature to other subjects | SCP-4███ will immediately state that the "last strike" has been earned regardless of previous strikes |
| C | Deliberate Gross Destruction: shooting a pistol at operating machinery, intentionally putting diesel fuel into a gasoline truck | One warning may or may not be vocalized (if so, is is unequivocal and threatening). Following that, if given, SCP-4███ immediately ionizes the subject without any further prompting. |
If SCP-4███ detects destructive or counterproductive activity at or above B1 level from any automaton that is not sentient, it will immediately ionize all atoms of the automaton using precisely focused gamma radiation. When a sentient subject reaches five strikes, SCP-4███ vocalizes as such. Unless an individual in a supervisory capacity within the facility (ex. a research giving instructions to a D-Class subject) vocalizes an order to the contrary, SCP-4███ will terminate the subject by means of ionizing all neural matter without affecting any other form of tissue, and will vocalize an announcement of such. Strikes appear to persist for life, even if a subject leaves and re-enters the facility, unless ordered cleared by a supervisor. Any attempt to destroy SCP-4███ results in immediate ionization; this does not result from spark analysis or other procedures without the intent of destruction.
Test A - Date
Subject: One D-Class personnel, carrying a sheet of paper entitled, "Supervisory Compliance Director: User Manual," and filled with pencil scribbles. The sheet of paper has been ripped in half. One full dispenser of ordinary Scotch-brand transparent office tape, a #2 HB wooden pencil, and a
Procedure: D-0813 enters the containment locker and uses the tape to stick the paper back together.
Results: After completing the instructed repair, D-0813 spontaneously erases the scribbles from the pages and writes the following text:

Test B - Date
Subject: SCP-1887-1 instances, approximately 3 mL volume.
Procedure: A naturally formed wood container was used to transport the SCP-1887-1 instances from containment to the containment area of SCP-4███. D-Class personnel carried the bowl inside the containment area, which contained several operational machines. It was planned to introduce SCP-1887-1 instances to the cube of SCP-4███ itself, but this was not possible.
Results:* Immediately upon contact with the artificial machines and containment area floor, SCP-1887 began deconstruction as expected; it began vocalizing as discussed in Addendum 1187-2 and reached a volume of approximately 45 dB after approximately 967 nanoseconds. At that time, SCP-4███ recognized a Type C Deliberate Gross Destruction activity. Confirming the Foundation's understanding that SCP-1887 is sentient, SCP-4███ vocalized, "STOP IMMEDIATELY. No person shall destroy any part of this facility. Noncompliance is punishable by immediate ionization in accordance with your Employment Agreement." No effect whatsoever was observed on SCP-1887, whose volume had increased to 50dB and had sufficiently progressed in deconstruction to render all machines nonfunctional. SCP-4███ waited 4532 ms before proceeding to the ionization phase. Within the next 12 picoseconds, all Foundation equipment and personnel were ionized. It is understood that SCP-4███ continued to emit ionizing radiation, causing a containment breach. All matter within approximately 0.3 km of SCP-4███ were ionized completely, and SCP-4███ redefined its facility to include the entire state of [REDACTED] until MTF Nu-7 agents deployed a modular trailer and relocated SCP-4███ inside. During that time, no known ionization events occurred, although SCP-4███ announced that it was deploying thermal radiation several times, indicating that SCP-4███ was temporarily drained of energy. No instances of SCP-1887-1 were observed anywhere in the area; they are considered destroyed.
