Item #: SCP-9987

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-9987 Is to be contained in a steel-plated metal box, exactly 12 inches in diameter and 6 inches in height. This box must be held in a 12 foot by 12 foot by 12 foot steel constructed room, with wooden shelves resembling that of a libraries on each side of the cell, these shelves must be restocked with newly manufactured books every 6 months. SCP-9987's containment chamber must be properly lit at all times with high-intensity spotlights aimed directly at/or near SCP-9987. This is to ensure no unusual activity occurs within the chamber. Personnel assigned to SCP-9987 must perform routine checkups on the books inside the containment room every week. Personnel must report to Dr. Lockart if there are any abnormalities with the books. Personnel must not come into contact with SCP-9987's steel-plated metal box unless instructed to do so by Dr. Lockart. Personnel entering the room, (with the exception of D-class personnel), must be wearing clothes with no words or letters transcribed onto them. Disobeying this rule when entering the chamber will lead to severe disciplinary action.

SCP-9987's containment chamber must always be kept at a temperature of 10-20 degrees Celsius with previously built fans located at the top of the chamber. These fans must be routinely inspected and thoroughly checked by on-board personnel on a monthly basis. If a malfunction were to occur, and temperature exceeds 20 degrees Celsius or drops below 10 degrees Celsius, immediate repairs of the fans must take place in order to keep SCP-9987 from becoming active. If no immediate repairs can take place, all personnel must evacuate the research room located near SCP-9987's containment cell, and wait until Dr. Lockart deems it safe to reenter the research room.

Description: SCP-9987 is a black colored book with unknown white carvings etched out on all sides. A █████ is also etched out on the front cover, supposedly of █████ origin. These carvings glow momentarily when observed directly, and show no direct resemblance with anything on Earth, and are undergoing further evaluation and study. All instances to decipher what SCP-9987 has written inside have been met with failure. SCP-9987 has been observed to ████████ letters and words on mostly any surface with ██████ of its own origin. The way SCP-9987 does this is unknown, and results in the surface of the object to be obliterated in an explosion of immense proportions once the ██████ have been observed directly by any sapient, biological creature. The explosion is triggered in a way unknown to the Foundation. This anomalous behavior by SCP-9987 does not seem to manifest if books of any origin or meaning are present within a range of 10 meters in any direction of SCP-9987, and if optimal temperature conditions are met. The reason for this is unknown, but it is speculated by Dr. ████ that SCP-9987 stores what is written in the books, inside its pages. Evidence of this is words, and in some instances paragraphs being removed from inside the books. In one instance, off of personnel.
