The entrance to Provisional Storage Area 196
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is contained at Provisional Storage Area 196. Under no circumstances are personnel to approach or attempt to interact with SCP-XXXX in any way: research is limited to observation only. This restriction also extends to SCP-XXXX-1 whenever it manifests.
Containment of SCP-XXXX-2 instances is effectively impossible. Containment is limited to disinformation campaigns in order to discredit any proposal that suggests that SCP-XXXX-2 instances are anomalous rather than natural biological occurrences.
Foundation researchers are to infiltrate any biological, anthropological, or census-related study involving SCP-XXXX-2 instances, known colloquially as ███████████████. Theories that propose SCP-XXXX-2 instances are the result of genetic factors or probability are to be bolstered and pushed by Foundation researchers that have infiltrated said groups of study. Public opinion regarding SCP-XXXX-2 instances is to be monitored at all times. Any publication blurring the distinction between SCP-XXXX-2 instances and their non-anomalous counterparts1 is to be supported and proliferated. As knowledge of SCP-XXXX-2 instances is public, it is of utmost importance that their nature remains under the guise of normalcy.
Description:
SCP-XXXX
SCP-XXXX is an ancient bronze bell of unknown origins. It is structurally and aesthetically similar to other bells recovered from Bronze Age era excavation. The bell appears structurally sound, and shows no signs of damage to the metal in terms of scratches, holes, or warping, with the only significant sign of aging being a full patina. It is currently unknown how the integrity of the bell has been maintained.
SCP-XXXX-1 refers to a bell hammer of identical styling to that of SCP-XXXX, constructed of a combination of bronze and wood. Although observation is difficult due to its brief manifestation period, video playback has shown that SCP-XXXX-1 is covered in identical inscriptions to that of SCP-XXXX, and the patina of the bronze portions looks similar in appearance to that of SCP-XXXX.
When active, SCP-XXXX will rise from its stone pedestal by an unknown mechanism and be struck by SCP-XXXX-1, which manifests once SCP-XXXX has begun its ascent. It subsequently descends to its resting position and SCP-XXXX-1 demanifests. SCP-XXXX is struck on an average of 90 seconds, and may occasionally be rung several times during a single levitation event, or may lie still for periods up to approximately 10 minutes. Research into the purpose of the bell striking is underway Level 4 clearance required for details.
Attempts to relocate SCP-XXXX have been met with failure. To date, all attempts to move SCP-XXXX through physical contact have failed, as any physical contact with SCP-XXXX will trigger its secondary effect. After multiple failed attempts using robotics and four mutilated D-Class, the 05 council has denied subsequent attempts to move SCP-XXXX, and mandated the construction of Provisional Storage Area 196.
Carbon dating has proven practically impossible due to the secondary effect of SCP-XXXX, but Foundation archaeologists and anthropologists hypothesize that SCP-XXXX predates the earliest Chinese bells from the Bronze Age. Foundation linguists have corroborated this estimation after studying the inscriptions covering the bell, finding no correlation to any documented civilization,2 ancient or extant.
Discovery: SCP-XXXX was discovered ███ meters deep in an isolated cave within Belukha Mountain of the Altai mountain range.3 SCP-XXXX came to the attention of Foundation personnel after webcrawlers flagged a YouTube video uploaded by a team of climbers entitled “STRANGE CLANGING FROM WITHIN THE MOUNTAIN! POGCHAMP” which had been uploaded as part of a series documenting their ascent of Belukha Mountain. Foundation personnel had the channel deleted within 24 hours, before the video had received █ views. The 4 climbers involved were identified and later amnesticized.
Foundation personnel found the cave system containing SCP-XXXX after ██ months of searching, as the harsh climate and isolated locale made it difficult to determine the source of the sound. The content of the video demonstrates that the climbers had not found the mouth of the cave themselves and only happened to hear the echo of SCP-XXXX while traversing nearby.
Provisional Storage Area 196 is constructed within the winding cave system that houses SCP-XXXX. It is speculated that SCP-XXXX was placed at this locale due to the isolated nature of the cave and its mountain, and the confusing nature of the interwoven tunnels of the cave system.

Despite its discovery in 20██, the purpose and function of SCP-XXXX was neither hypothesized nor theorized until 20██. Foundation personnel comparing census numbers from The International Database (IDB) against foundation records found that the number of SCP-XXXX striking events correlated with the number of documented monozygotic (identical) twins, triplets, and the (very rare) higher monozygotic birth numbers. This correlation has been studied for the last ██ years, and when charted shows a consistency that suggests that the striking is causal.4 The numbers presented by the IDB records are always lower than the number of recording strikings by SCP-XXXX, which is always at least ███████. Statistical analysis has shown that the difference in values can be explained by miscarriages, faulty or incomplete census data, and nations or tribes that were not included in IDB studies.
SCP-XXXX-2 instances, colloquially referred to as monozygotic or identical twins, are generated when SCP-XXXX is struck by SCP-XXXX-1. It is unknown how mothers are selected to bear SCP-XXXX-2 instances, or how the frequency of these selections is determined. It is unknown how or why SCP-XXXX was constructed.
The correlation between SCP-XXXX events and IDB data was tested in Addenda Test Log XXXX-A by introducing a pair of SCP-XXXX-2 instances to SCP-XXXX.

Addenda Test Log XXXX-A:
VIDEO LOG
DATE: ██/██/20██
NOTE: D-12345 & D-12346 are a pair of monozygotic twins that were arrested after a series of bank heists.
[BEGIN LOG]
14:30 D-12345 & D-12346 are instructed to move as close to SCP-XXXX as possible without making physical contact, and are instructed to approach slowly.
14:31:D-1235 & D-12346 begin the test at a distance of 30 meters.
14:32: D-1235 & D-12346 reach a distance of 17 meters. Both D-Class begin sweating profusely, shaking, and appear to be severely uncomfortable.
14:33: D-1245 & D-12346 simultaneously stop 14 meters from SCP-XXXX. It is worth noting that a review of the video playback reveals that both D-Class began mirroring each other's movements at the 14 meter mark.5
14:34: D-12345 & D12346 falter together, turning back to Foundation personnel, and request permission to retreat. The request is denied. D-12345 & D12346 are instructed to continue their approach.
14:36: At the 10 meter mark D-12345 & D-12346 immediately drop to the cave floor and writhe. Personnel reports and playback of the footage document shrieks of pain emanating from each of the D-class. Foundation acousticians have confirmed that the sound emanating from each individual is fundamentally identical in all regards.
14:38 D-12345 & D-12346 continue to scream and thrash. Medical team requests to move in to prevent head trauma and possible aspiration of the water surrounding SCP-XXXX. Senior researchers deny this request.
14:40 D-12345 & D-12346 cease all movement, with a stiffness reminiscent of rigor mortis. Senior researchers discuss terminating test but are interrupted by subsequent events.
14:42 D-12345 and D-12346 are violently dragged 9 meters closer to SCP-XXXX by an unseen force. Analysis of playback confirms D-12345 & D-12346 were placed equidistant from SCP-XXXX and each other.
14:43 D-12345 & D-12346 become translucent over the next 43 seconds.
14:44 D-12345 and D-12346 are drawn to a central point between them and begin to occupy the same space.
14:52 D-12345 and D-12346 occupy the same 3-dimensional space. The new entity combined of both D-class rapidly becomes opaque.
15:00 The combined D class regains consciousness, opens its eyes and stands up. Combined D class examines itself.
15:03 The combined D class says the following. One should note that the recorded audio reveals two identical voices echoing from the resultant D Class:
[BEGIN LOG]
Combined D Class: “I…he…us. So this…thing split me? I’ve lived two different lives. I have two families, two sets of kids, two sets of memories. Why? Just…why? I…we don’t know what to say. I could have been as whole as any of you! But he, I…we? We were brothers. This thing made me into my own brother! I was my own childhood companion…I could have lived a life as normal as any of you, but I was split! Two of us…one and the same…for this…this fucking thing to split me up! I…we!”
[END LOG]
15:05 Combined D Class begins showing signs of agitation.
15:06 Researchers attempt to reason with the combined D class as medical personnel begin readying a sedative. Security personnel are unable to administer the sedative, however, as the combined D Class yells6 and turns around to attack SCP-XXXX. As with previous events involving physical contact with SCP-XXXX, the combined D Class is immediately cleft through [DATA EXPUNGED] by the secondary effect of SCP-XXXX.
Autopsy of the combined D Class’ remains reveals no anomalies, and gene sequencing demonstrates an identical genome across all organs and bodily structures.
Further testing with sets of monozygotic twins7 is under review by the Ethics Committee.
