SCP-XXXX Anomalous App
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-XXXX is to be contained within it's original box packaging, stored within a standard Secure Storage Locker at site 19. Access to SCP-XXXX is allowed for research purposes only, and must first be authorised by personnel of level-3 clearance or higher.
SCP-XXXX is to be contained within a reinforced containment cell configured with a fast-activating incinerator. The cell is to be permanently locked and must remain guarded at all times by no less than three security personnel. In the event of a containment breach, the incinerator is to be activated, destroying SCP-XXXX instantly.
Access to SCP-XXXX is strictly forbidden for all staff and conscious entities except for members of the O5 council, whom may only be granted access to SCP-XXXX in the event that the majority of the O5 council vote that sufficient evidence has been discovered to disprove the theorised YK-Class threat posed by SCP-XXXX.
Description:
SCP-XXXX is a modified Oculus Quest virtual reality headset. It is contained within it's original box packaging along with a small note with the Anderson Robotics logo printed on top.
The handwritten note reads "-Experimental Pass-through Prototype- Results thus far have proven to be on target with expectations, however scalability continues to be a problem. Further optimisation of the back-end platform is required before further prototypes can be produced. We'll revisit the project once this hurdle has been overcome but for now I'm suspending any further work on the Anderson Altered Reality project. -AF"
When SCP-XXXX is placed on the head of a person and powered on, it operates much like any standard Oculus quest except for the existence of a unique menu item appearing in the unknown sources app list labelled as "Experimental Pass-through v0.04". Publisher is listed as Anderson Robotics.
If this application is selected the first of SCP-XXXX's anomalous properties will begin to manifest. SCP-XXXX will proceed to fade the user menu to black, shortly followed by what appears to be a black and white video pass-through representation of the space around the user in a manner that is seemingly identical to the Oculus Quest's standard pass-through feature, however according to the user, the space surrounding them will gradually begin to alter dramatically from their recollection of it's real-world counterpart, with discrepancies first becoming apparent within five minutes of operation and extended exposure resulting in a greater degree of alteration according to the user.
At any time that a user removes SCP-XXXX from their head they are generally shocked to see that the environment around them was indeed matching their virtual pass-through perspective. At this point users usually begin to query the researchers present as to how certain objects had entered the interview room or how the patterns on the wall had changed since they had entered the room, suggesting that their memories of the space before using SCP-XXXX had been altered. Responses to these questions have been consistent; That the objects and patterns had been that way before they entered the room. Responses from test subjects at this point range from incredulous to alarmingly anxious with subjects claiming that SCP-XXXX had somehow changed the real world around them while they used it.
Upon completion of interview 03 with test Subject D-Class #BLANKED Class-B amnestics were administered when the subject was unable to calm down, however the amnestics proved to be ineffectual as the subject remained cognisant of the discrepancies between reality and their supposed 'original' reality. Subject had no recollection of exposure to SCP-XXXX or of taking part in the interview, as such, the amnestics are assumed to have functioned correctly on the subject, however the cognitohazardous properties of SCP-XXXX appear to extend well beyond recent memory additions, instead altering a subject's entire memory.
Addendum:
SCP-XXXX has been reclassified as a euclid class Reality Altering entity after the events of Interview 04 (see log for details). Based on the foundation's current understanding, the initial description of SCP-XXXX remains accurate, however as a direct result of information acquired by researchers Newel and Briggs that is conducive with prior testing, it is now presumed that SCP-XXXX may in fact gradually alter our universe whilst in use.
The full extent of these universal alterations is not known, however given the results of interview logs 01 through 04, it is understood that longer periods of anomalous activation may result in substantial irreversible harm to our universe. The possibility of an YK-Class Reality Restructuring Scenario has not been ruled out. See excerpt from interview Log 04 below for further details.
Upon reclassification to euclid with recognition as a potential YK-class threat, O5-2 has taken a particular interest in the object, going on record as stating that it's appointment as a YK-class threat by Site Director Dr. Bright is most likely incorrect and "jumping to conclusions", as O5-2 states that the occurrence of any anomalous reality altering event would have been perceivable to them, hence they surmise that the object's anomalous properties do not extend to reality altering proportions.
This suggestion raises two other possibilities, that the object instead actively replaces the memories of the subject with memories of their parallel selves from alternate universes, possibly even swapping entire minds between alternate universes. This would explain the discrepancies experienced by users of the device. If this is the case, it may be possible to use SCP-XXXX to establish communication with parallel universes. Testing of this theory is currently denied due to the possibility that O5-2's assessment of the object could be incorrect, however unlikely that may be.
The other possibility is that SCP-XXXX anomalously virtualises our entire universe and then mutates the simulated universe gradually, supplanting the user's memories with those conjured up within it's internally simulated universe, however this possibility would imply that SCP-XXXX is capable of nearly limitless anomalous computational power. If this hypothesis is true, the foundation has great interest in understanding and potentially reverse engineering the anonymous process by which SCP-XXXX is able to achieve this.
Site Director Dr. Bright notes that while open communication with his parallel selves would be quote "dope af" the risk of accidentally bringing about the end of the known universe in the case that our currently appointed reclassification of the object is in fact accurate is far too great to take that chance. Unless we can find a safer way to accurately identify the full extent, and the potential severity of SCP-XXXX's anonymous effects, all further testing remains strictly forbidden and the object is to be kept in permanent lock-down until such a method of assessment can be deduced.
