Item #: SCP-3749-J
Object Class: Safe/Thaumiel
Special Containment Procedures: Due to the nature of SCP-3749-J, containment is rendered unnecessary. Investigations into the source of SCP-3749-J are still pending.
SCP-3749-J may be used by foundation staff to access the webpages it advertises, as it has been documented to have no ill effects, and benefits the foundation with small compensation.
Description: SCP-3749-J refers to a group of advertisements (Always in sets of 5) that manifest at the bottom of every foundation webpage. The advertisements have always consistently been for ~~private surveillance systems, along with being for an attorney for individuals afflicted with personal injury~~
Update; 4/20/19: Advertisements have shifted give links for personal finance/entertainment, with one being for personal fitness.
SCP-3749-J links to non-anomalous websites that provide the services they are labelled with. Questioning the owners of the websites advertised have resulted in no knowledge of advertising with any company documented as anomalous, leading to an investigative dead end.
Discovery: SCP-3749-J was discovered when internal discussion arose about the advertisements at the bottom of every foundation webpage. Personnel were either confused, panicked at the thought of a containment breach, or just blatantly ignored the ads out of habit. When the existence of SCP-3749-J was brought to the attention of the O-5 council, the foundation IT forensics department was assigned to discover the origin of the advertisements. After months of investigation, the department came up with no evidence of any technological interference with the foundation’s database. SCP-3749-J was then categorized as an anomalous software breach and archived.
Attempts to remove SCP-3749-J has proven ineffective, with any changes to the foundation webpage infrastructure has not been able to successfully remove the advertisements.
Neutralization Attempt Log:
Test 1: Remove SCP-3749-J from the source of each webpage individually
Result: SCP-3749-J could not be removed from a single webpage. Deleting it in the source of the page led to it returning as soon as the edits were saved.
Test 2: Changing the structure of the page to be too short to house SCP-3749-J.
Result: SCP-3749-J rendered on top of the text on the lower area of the article, shifting up to ensure appearance.
Test 3: Deleting all information on a foundation article
Result: Upon saving, SCP-3749-J remained as the only part of the article, appearing front and center on the page.
Addendum: On the date [REDACTED], researcher Elizabeth Nightingale mistakenly clicked on one of the advertisements of SCP-3749-J, and immediately closed out of the webpage. Later that day, O5-1 received a check in their personal postbox for exactly $0.10 from the order of [DATA EXPUNGED] Advertising LTD. The envelope containing the check also contained a written letter (Designated as Document X-1).
Document X-1
Dear Secure, Contain, Protect Foundation:
Thank you for your humble patronage to our humble advertisers. As stated in our guidelines, you have been awarded a 10% consolation for your advertisements placed on your website http://www.scp-wiki.net. Our advertisers thank you, and we are excited to be doing business with your company, Mr./Ms. [EXPUNGED] (Referred to O5-1 by their true name)
Signed, [DATA EXPUNGED] Advertising LTD.
P.S; I know our advertisements can be a tad intrusive, but please do not attempt to remove or relocate them. Doing so may break a few things on your personal website and goes against our terms of service.
[DATA EXPUNGED] Advertising LTD. is currently being documented as a GOI. Investigations into how it obtained O5-1’s true identity are still underway.
Foundation resources planted in banking companies across the globe have reported no money being funneled from the companies advertised in any way, leading to the conclusion that the money provided by SCP-3749-J is produced via an anomalous means.
[DATA EXPUNGED] Advertising LTD. has yet to reply to any mail sent to it via the return address on the letter O5-1 received ([DATA EXPUNGED], Utah, USA). The address in question has been unable to be located by foundation field agents as of yet.
Note from O5-1: While this company having knowledge of my identity is quite alarming, they do not appear to have any malicious intent against the foundation. Plus, testing has shown that each click of the advertisements provided by SCP-3749-J does indeed generate $0.10 of revenue for the foundation. We of the O5-council have voted in a 9-3-1 vote to allow foundation personnel to use the advertisements if they appeal to them in any way, as it generates quite a bit of additional funds for us, considering how many employees we have.
Besides, thought of another anomalous being with seemingly unlimited funds akin to SCP-4333 is quite unsettling to say the least. It might be best not to trifle with them as we did with 4333.
