Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures:
Provisional facility Site 121-XXXX has been constructed around the mouth of SCP-XXXX, disguised as a large house. Site-121-XXXX SCP-XXXX is to be constantly monitored for the appearance of instances of SCP-XXXX-1 or for any change in overall anomalous properties. Site 121-XXXX is to be consta
The entrance to SCP-XXXX is to be surrounded by a 3m high stainless steel electric fence. Armed personnel are to be stationed 5m apart along the perimeter of the fence. A 2m high, 100m long barbed wire fence must also be employed at a distance of approximately 10m from the edge of the cliff, with signposts every 10m displaying the following warning:
WARNING
A sea mine is embedded in the cliff ahead. Going past this point will put you at risk of death.
CCTV cameras are stationed nearby. Any individual found to have entered the critical zone will be subject to fines. You have been warned.
CCTV cameras are to be mounted on steel posts along the perimeter of the outer fence and on the cliff-edge. Any individuals found to have breached the outer fence is to be detained and interrogated, before being released with a fine or amnestisised if the inner fence was discovered.
Description:
SCP-XXXX is a solutional cave located at Land's End, United Kingdom, with an entrance at the coordinates 50°03'30.1"N 5°42'37.6"W. While conclusive mapping of SCP-XXXX is not yet possible due to its anomalous properties, a combination of testing and ultrasound technology has so far been unable to locate the deepest point of the cave. A rudimentary map surveying the first —— has been effectively constructed.
Upon reaching a depth of --— metres, the memetic effects of SCP-XXXX become apparent. Individuals report feelings of increasing dread, fatigue, and an overwhelming desire to fall asleep. Despite, this, however, they also report a strong desire to continue descending, regardless of the psychological distress that doing so exerts upon the individual. At least 80% of subjects will assume a preferred sleeping position and fall asleep inside the cave, and after approximately 15 minutes, will perish through unknown means.
At a depth of -- metres, individuals who have not yet succumbed will encounter a vertical chute, labelled SCP-XXXX-1 (see map above). Upon approaching the chute, subjects report a compulsive urge to throw themselves in. So far, 100% of test subjects that reached SCP-XXXX-1 have
perished in this way.
Roughly 30-60 minutes after a subject's death, a new individual will be seen exiting the cave, henceforth referred to collectively as SCP-XXXX-2. Instances of SCP-XXXX-2 are genetically identical to humans, possess no anomalous properties relevant to the case (the emergence of anomalous properties has so far been consistent with that of the normal human population) and have memories and identities consistent with recorded data of persons sharing the instances' names.
Instances will emerge wearing appropriate caving gear and carrying necessary equipment.
So far, it has been impossible to prove that SCP-XXXX is creating instances of SCP-XXXX-2. All instances assert that they entered SCP-XXXX at some prior time, which has so far been impossible to disprove (see SCP-XXXX-2 log below). However, the foundation has yet to see an SCP-XXXX-2 instance actually enter SCP-XXXX, and while it has been theorised that SCP-XXXX transports individuals from elsewhere into the cave, researchers have noted that it wouldn't be logical for the instances to wear caving equipment. Speculation is ongoing as to the origin of SCP-XXXX-1 instances, however due to the loss of life testing has been largely discontinued.
However, it has been
Local legend surrounding the cave describes it as the burial place of a bucca . See addendum XXXX-X for details.
Details of Recovery:
The Foundation were made aware of SCP-XXXX on 25/08/2020 when contacted by a Dr Luscinia Faulconbridge after her youngest son, Brandon, was reported by to have 'thrown himself into a hole' during an unsupervised caving attempt. Brandon had reportedly entered the cave at approximately 10am along with his two older siblings, Fleance and Francesca, and three of his friends, Michael and Lucy Davids, and Paulina Jardine. Fleance and Francesca, both of whom have anomalous properties (see Interview Log XXXX-2) were the only survivors of the incident.
Upon being alerted by them of the incident, Dr Faulconbridge contacted the Foundation via a private telephone number that she had access to as a result of involvement with [REDACTED]. Shortly after this event, Francesca reportedly 'disappeared' (see Interview Log XXXX-2) after rushing off in an agitated state. Fleance and Dr Faulconbridge were immediately taken into Foundation custody, and the latter was permitted employment as a junior researching assistant working on low-threat level anomalies. Fleance, whose anomalous properties are a larger threat, has been contained and is henceforth referred to as SCP-XXXY-Y
Interview Log XXXX-1:
Below is an excerpt of a transcript of an interview between Head Researcher Michael Phillips and SCP-XXXY-Y, conducted at 09:00, 26/08/2005. For purposes of brevity, only the parts discussing SCP-XXXX are included.
<Begin Log>
Phillips: good morning, SCP-XXXY-Y. We are here to discuss the events that occurred yesterday > concerning your younger brother. Brandon, was it?
SCP-XXXY-Y: Yes, sir. We called him 'Don'. He was a good boy. He was… always smiling. He wouldn't be one to… to - well, I suppose you know already.
Phillips: That is what we are here to talk about. Could you please explain exactly what
happened?
SCP-XXXY-Y: Yes, sir. I suppose I should start from the beginning. It was the end of Brandon's first year at Secondary School, and our family does this thing where we organise a road trip with a few of our friends, you know, to show that we're growing up. Don wanted to come to Cornwall. When we arrived here we went on a walk - that was three days ago, I think - we saw this… cave, at the edge of the cliff. We were planning to go caving later, when we reached St Just, but Brandon wouldn't stop talking about this one. It felt… strange.
Phillips: In what sense?
SCP-XXXY-Y: I - I don't know exactly. There just seemed to be some sense of… magnitude > about the place, like it couldn't be described… I - I have a tendency to be a bit dramatic, so I didn't really consider it.
Phillips: And is it usual for you to go caving unsupervised?
SCP-XXXY-Y: Yes sir. We have all the equipment, and Francesca and I can handle… most things. And Brandon… he could erase memories. You'll - you'll probably interview me on this later, right? So we reckoned if anything happened, we could just use our 'abilities' or whatever you call them to deal with it. But mum was still reluctant. It was our fault really - me and Francesca's. We should've put our foot down, and told them we were going caving later. But the kids were so excited…
Phillips: Understandable. [brief pause as Dr Phillips switches papers] Could you describe what happened upon entering the cave?
SCP-XXXY-Y: The first xxx metres was easy going. It felt almost like the cave was made to be explored. The initial descent was just wide enough for all of us to fit through while still being able to touch either side. I think we were around xxx metres in when I tore my shoe on the cave wall.
Phillips: And what did you do next?
*SCP-XXXY-Y:** Well, I couldn't continue without my shoes. We'd just entered a cavern, so I stopped and tried to evaluate the damage. Francesca was with me. She yelled after the kids to tell them to stop and wait, but when we looked up - it couldn't have been more than a minute - we'd lost sight of them. We could only see their lights bobbing up and down. It was… an unusually dark cavern. Francesca shouted after them again, to tell them to stop, but they ignored her. Maybe they couldn't hear. We ran towards the lights to try and find them. Then we heard the most terrible sound.
Phillips: What sound?
SCP-XXXY-Y: Imagine the sound of three twelve-year-olds wailing.
Phillips: Please elaborate. What were they saying?
SCP-XXXY-Y: [A sigh, and a short pause] Sorry. I don't like remembering it. They were crying out that they were afraid, and that they - that they - [a second pause]
Phillips: XXXY-Y?
SCP-XXXY-Y: That they… couldn't take it anymore. That it was too dark, that they just wanted to curl up and sleep, and disappear. They - they kept wailing like this for a short while - it felt like hours but it must have only been a short while, Fran checked her watch when we got out - then their voices just… stopped, one by one. As if they had really… fallen asleep.
Phillips: I see. [scribbling on clipboard] Are you sure that they were the children?
SCP-XXXY-Y: I recognised their voices. But Don wasn't there. His voice, I mean - we didn't hear it.
Phillips: So the cave itself doesn't emit sound. Right. Do you believe that your brother may still be alive?
SCP-XXXY-Y: Really? Could he still be in there?
Phillips: I don't see why not. Unless we can confirm that SCP-XXXX does, in fact, kill people, it is safe to assume that the children simply fell asleep.
SCP-XXXY-Y: Oh, that would be wonderful - please, please take a look in there. I hope - Don couldn't have -
Phillips: An exploratory mission is being devised as we speak. Keep faith, XXXY-Y. That done, I have a few further questions to ask you regarding your family.
