Description: SCP-XXXX is a phenomenon that causes rats in large American cities such as Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston, to develop human levels of sentience. The rats have an extended life span, living on average about 9 years. Infected rats always move in groups ranging from 3-12 and are capable of walking on all fours and their hind legs. Infected rats also seem to develop an appreciation and subsequent viewpoint of the punk and grunge subcultures of the 90s, often favoring anarchism and socialism as their political ideologies.
Instances of SCP-XXXX are literate, with varying degrees of eloquence. Depending on the colony, rats infected with SCP-XXXX are able to write poetry, music, independant novels, manifestos, and create street art. Different colonies favor different means of creating art but recurring themes seen in most all pieces of work created by SCP-XXXX are: dissatisfaction with modern life, specifically late capitalism, socialism, anarchism, marxism, and other left leaning ideologies.
SCP-XXXX's have also been observed modifying their body in ways such as piercing their ears and noses with things such as safety pins, thumb tacks, and small earrings, dying their fur with marker and pen ink, and fashioning clothing out of discarded fabric. There seems to be no difference in the clothing and accessories worn between male and female rats. Interviews with infected entities also reveal that they choose names for themselves, the type of names ranging from typical human names, to objects, to abstract concepts. Gendering in the names chosen for the gender of the rat also seems to be absent, with the personality factoring in more.
Currently there are 14 different colonies of SCP-XXXX in containment: 2 from Cincinnati, 1 from Phoenix, 4 from New York City, 3 from Boston Massachusetts, 1 From Denver, and 3 from Los Angeles.
The first instance of SCP-XXXX was in 2009, they were discovered by the Foundation after a video of a group of 7 rats stacked on top of each other to spray paint the anarchy symbol on the wall of a subway went viral on ███████. Since then, several more instances have been discovered and contained by the Foundation.
