Liminality Room

BACKSTORY (which keeps mutating the more I think about it, but this is my favorite so far, as of 5/28/2019): SCP-N originated in a single building, occupied by long-defunct technology startup [redacted]. This startup was attempting to establish a travel-by-teleportation product. Think lots of work with electromagnetic fields, mu-metals, superconductors, etc. Human/animal experimentation also occurred, which accounts for the liquid secretions - basically, the ceiling tubes will produce bits of whatever was subjected to the wormhole experiments, which have been “trapped out of time” since the 1970s.

Item #: SCP-N

Object Class: ????

Special Containment Procedures: The Foundation has purchased two buildings with known instances of SCP-N access, which shall be kept unoccupied, minimally staffed, and maintained only to the extent that the affected building's appearance will not draw undue attention. The Foundation shall place appropriate contacts in relevant city fire and building inspection departments such that any new instances of SCP-N access will be reported immediately following new contact with SCP-N. Memory modification protocols may or may not be necessary in the event of civilian encounters with SCP-N; this Department leaves such decisions at the discretion of responding officers.

SCP-N is subject to re-evaluation on a semi-annual basis, as the full range of possible substances SCP-N-1 (see description below) may produce is unknown, and as work requiring prolonged or repeated exposure to SCP-N could pose health risks to Foundation personnel.

Description: SCP-N is a 7’x5’x10’ region of anomalous interior space located in general-use office buildings built between 1971 - 1988. Thus far, SCP-N has been exclusively observed in the cities of [redacted] and [redacted], California.

It is currently believed to be a single region with two (2) simultaneous access points at any given time.

SCP-N is further characterized by:

(1) The presence of multiple lengths of tubing (SCP-N-1) and/or copper pipe and/or threaded stainless steel or zinc-alloy threaded rod protruding from a small area of ceiling above the affected space. SCP-N-1 will, in the presence of humans, produce small volumes of any number of fluids (see below).

(2) Disproportionately aged/worn appearance of paint, flooring, ceiling panels, etc., in the affected space compared with immediately adjacent/contiguous surfaces.

(3) Low to moderate illumination that seems to originate somewhere roughly [N] meters above the floor; no actual source for this illumination is apparent at the expected coordinates, per analysis of shadow positioning and light intensity.

(4) “Wormhole”-like behavior wherein two human subjects simultaneously entering SCP-N separately from its two currently-known ‘host’ buildings will always end up leaving SCP-N via the *same* host building.

The “wormhole” effect appears to only be triggered by the presence of subjects in *both* host buildings; i.e., a person who enters SCP-N from within Host Building A will always remain in Host Building A upon exiting SCP-N, *unless* a second person has entered Host Building B and accessed SCP-N at the same time. In the latter case, both subjects will find themselves in either HB-A or HB-B once they exit SCP-N.

The likelihood of ending up in HB-A or HB-B appears to be random, with an approximately 50/50 distribution.

——
The tubing and pipes emerging from the drop ceiling panels will occasionally excrete liquid, in volumes ranging from the microliter range to several ounces per day.

The nature of this liquid varies with individual instances of SCP-N, and can even vary from day to day within an individual instance. Regardless, investigations into the sources of these liquids have yielded no information. The tubing and piping always appears to terminate 5”-12” above the drop ceiling panels, and is not tied into any of the building’s otherwise functional plumbing.

Specific substances produced by SCP-N’s tubing have included (per chemical analysis, including, but not limited to, microscope imaging, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, DNA sequencing, and/or colorimetry):

- Blood, typically mammalian (human, porcine, bovine)
- Hypertonic saline solution
- Hydrochloric acid solution (10-30%)
- Glucose syrup, which may or may not emerge combined with artificial food-grade coloring media
- 70% isopropyl alcohol
- Water, with dissolved solids content approximately 50 ppm (TDS meter reading)

While, again, the originating source of these liquids remains unknown, it does appear that secretion occurs ONLY during human occupancy of SCP-N. Staining and other permanent minor damage to flooring materials, such as asbestos or vinyl-composite tile, is observed on occasion, but at no time has total destruction of flooring within the bounds of SCP-N been noted.

DNA analysis of blood produced by SCP-N has not yielded specific identity matches with any known database entries (human or animal). Human blood, when produced, appears “fresh” and uncoagulated, and invariably tests as type O+. It is readily separable into plasma and cellular “pellet” products via centrifugation. No known pathogens or toxins have yet been observed present in this blood, however, personnel are still required to observe standard PPE and biohazard disposal protocols during experimental handling.
