Item #: SCP-4882
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: Due to the nature of SCP-4882, containment procedures cannot be implemented at this time. Research Site-4882 has been constructed and isolated in order to facilitate research into containment solutions for SCP-4882.
Further information pertaining to this anomaly and research into its containment is restricted to personnel with 5/4882 clearance only.
Strategic Conduct Protocols
Containment of SCP-4882 presently consists solely of the following provisions:
- A non-indicative placeholder file has been appended to the SCP-4882 slot in all extant digital copies of the Special Containment Procedures database. This file shall not describe SCP-4882 in any form, and provide only the relevant location for SCP-4882 related inquiries.

Description
SCP-4882 is the collective designation for an extremely large number of anomalous code strings operating on the overwhelming majority of digital and other computing devices worldwide.
Instances of SCP-4882 occur in a variety of programming languages, ranging in abstraction from extremely large segments of machine code, to variants of non-anomalous modern programming languages, to entirely unknown syntactical and logical formats. All such instances are highly resistant to analysis; attempts to view, edit, decompile, or otherwise manipulate the code of an SCP-4882 instance leads to unpredictable changes and potentially hostile responses on the part of infected devices.
Devices infected with SCP-4882 display anomalous computational, sensory, and communicative properties. SCP-4882 instances with transmission capabilities (or the possibility of physical interface with other devices) act as vectors for the spread of SCP-4882. Instances that possess sensory equipment have been observed engaging these functions without the intent of their users, and in various cases are able to record measurements that they ordinarily would not be able to, including ontokinetic, thaumic, or other anomalous phenomena. Motile instances deviate from their programming at apparently random intervals and adopt independent and unpredictable patterns of activity ranging from unusually efficient execution of their intended functions, to the creation of anomalous or non-anomalous technological objects, or to seemingly pointless or self-destructive actions.
Owing to the widespread nature of SCP-4882 infection, it is estimated by Site-4882 researchers that approximately 170 formally recognized SCP objects and an indeterminate number of further known anomalous technological items are, in fact, SCP-4882 instances. Their connections to SCP-4882 have been expunged from the general Foundation database and, presumably, all digital databases worldwide by SCP-4882-A.
Creation
PoI-4882, circa 1960.
The original instances of SCP-4882 are believed to have been created as a result of a thaumatological working or workings executed in the late 1970s by agents of the Church of the Broken God under the leadership of Maximilian Stanton (PoI-4882), a noted dissident from the orthodox branches of the Church as well as its modern sects.
As of 1950, PoI-4882 had had a history of using Church artifacts and other anomalies to subvert Foundation interests. A high-order (Stage IV) precognitive, PoI-4882 had evaded various attempts by the Foundation, Global Occult Coalition, and similar agencies to apprehend him. Though he was a traditional agent of the Church in his early life and middle-age (some contemporaries suggest he was an associate of Bumaro himself), PoI-4882 had become disillusioned with the doctrines of the Church, particularly those pertaining to the potential for human apotheosis and the nature of the Church's deity, known as Mekhane.
In 1977, PoI-4882 had gathered a group of Church associates about itself in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Utilizing its anomalous properties and certain mind-affecting SCP objects, PoI-4882 maneuvered itself and some of its associates into a variety of professorial and administrative positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a then-undiscovered hotbed of Church activity. The prestigious nature of the institution and PoI-4882's personal wealth enabled it and its associates to secretly conduct various paratechnological experiments, for the purpose of creating what they termed an "ideal consciousness," unrestricted by material reality.
Recovered anomalies that these individuals had acquired and had been using to this end include:
- old ai
- 033?
- broken mind
- 882 sample
- thought-broadcasting patient

The experiments culminated in an anomalous event since termed Ritual-004C-1. Recovered correspondence between PoI-4882 and other involved persons indicates that this was anticipated to be the final stage in their experiments, and the point that their god would cease to be broken. The less devout persons involved considered this to be a technological singularity, in the commonly understood futurological sense.1
At the time, the only discernible result of Ritual-004C-1 was the death of all involved persons by visual cognitohazard-induced strokes, with the exception of PoI-4882 and one other involved person, who was blind. These two feigned discovery of the dead persons to local police and subsequently eluded Foundation personnel dispatched to acquire the newly discovered SCP objects. These objects were contained under appropriate false cover stories and the MIT campus building which housed them was contained until such time as it could be confirmed to be non-anomalous.

Proposed Containment Solutions
- PCS-Morpheus-Blue: Use of memetic command agents (Kholoud, Azt, GRU-P, or similar derivation) to instill an anathema to information technology in Ganymede Protocol-created humans.
- PCS-Crossroads-Black: Appeal to the SCP-738 entity, or to other Class-XII or higher (Olympia-class) reality altering entities for the sake of expunging SCP-4882 or else mitigating its abilities and/or activities.
- PCS-Silicon-White: Use of SCP-3120 to publicize the existence of SCP-4882 or to obtain a containment plan.
- PCS-Monarch-Maroon:
- PCS-Sublime-Velvet: 033?
