Appalachian Ghost Sandbox I

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid (formerly Safe)

Special Containment Procedures: The staff at Observation Post XXXX are to monitor remote cameras placed within SCP-XXXX for any signs of activity. Once per week a staff member is to be sent in to check cameras and give necessary maintenance. No staff should be present within SCP-XXXX between 6:00 am EST and 7:00 am EST. All staff members entering SCP-XXXX are to wear standard issue waterproof hazmat suits. All suits should be regularly checked and maintained to standard Foundation maintenance code.

The entrance to SCP-XXXX is to remain blocked by a waterproof seal at all times save for movement in and out of SCP-XXXX. SCP Foundation Personnel have retrofitted the space outside SCP-XXXX with a steel pan and drainage system inserted into the ground to collect any SCP-XXXX-2 leakage, as well as constructing a waterproof chamber and decontamination room adjacent.

No more than 5 gallons of SCP-XXXX-2 samples from SCP-XXXX are to be kept at Observation Post XXXX. Should samples surpass 5 gallons, a staff member is to be sent through SCP-XXXX to dispose of up to 5 gallons of the collected samples.

No samples from SCP-XXXX are to be moved outside of Observation Post XXXX. No foreign liquids are to enter or be removed from a 50 meter radius of SCP-XXXX.

Version 4.3

Description: SCP-XXXX is a stable spacetime anomaly accessible via a door on the second floor of ████ Hillcrest Rd's main building in Elk City, Idaho, United States of America.

Entering the door causes an individual to pass through SCP-XXXX, which leads to what appears to be a parallel reality. Individuals step into a damaged and deteriorated copy of the property which has undergone severe water damage to the buildings, furniture, machinery, and surrounding foliage. The topology surrounding the property is nearly identical to that of the area surrounding SCP-XXXX. However, all surrounding buildings, plants, and some natural structures have undergone severe water damage, and the surrounding area is flooded an approximate 1206 meters above sea level with standing SCP-XXXX-2. This parallel reality undergoes a nearly constant downpour of SCP-XXXX-2, with the exception of 15 minute period from 6:30 am EST to 6:45 am EST where the downpour slows to a stop over the span of 30 seconds. The clouds within SCP-XXXX never break, making plant growth impossible due to lack of sunlight.

No living plant or animal life, including humans, has been observed. Foundation personnel have observed minor amounts of fungal life, such as Penicillium, and some forms of bacteria.

SCP-XXXX-2 is the water from within SCP-XXXX that exhibits anomalous properties when ingested by animals. Subjects begin experiencing signs of fatigue shortly after ingestion of samples, with symptoms growing worse exponentially as time passes until subject becomes unconscious, typically within less than an hour. Subjects remain unconscious in proportion to how much SCP-XXXX-2 they consumed, with an approximate 6 ounces of SCP-XXXX-2 equaling 16 hours of time unconscious.

Attempts to wake subjects from this unconscious state result in immediate cardiac arrest and without medical intervention, shortly after death. Subjects kept from falling unconscious quickly exhibit signs of sleep deprivation, progressing within 2 hours of water ingestion into symptoms of paranoia, extreme fatigue, hallucinations, and seizures.

SCP-XXXX-2 samples from SCP-XXXX show no oddities in their chemical makeup and no foreign elements not present in samples of salt water of our native reality. Mixing SCP-XXXX-2 with water from our native reality does not result in the water exhibiting the same properties as SCP-XXXX-2, but does make the recovery of SCP-XXXX-2 impossible as the sample mixes with the water.

We drowned the world. I think it was because of the Lucid? Or the old man? People didn’t like him.

Who were they?

Who were who?

The Lucid and the old man?

They just were. They were the same and yet they were separate. Not everybody could call him the old man. Too many holes in their heads.

She rubs her head.

I think the holes in mine are just a little smaller.

Who was he? Can you remember?

He was the Lucid. Was he God? No… But maybe? It’s hard to remember, so many holes. But I know people didn’t like him. I think I understand why. He changed a lot of things, made up his own rules we had to follow, and he was mean to people. But I think maybe most people liked him because they all got sad…

What do you mean by ‘people didn’t like him’? Why didn’t people like him?

Oh, he was mean. He showed up one day and started changing everything. He would tell people to love him and they would. He told women to have sex with him and they did. It was mean. And then he made things worse, if he didn’t like someone he would subsume them away. That’s what he called it. We were his dream so he just made us go away. There was no room in the dream for them. If he really didn’t like something he’d take away all of it. He thought some things were right and some things were wrong. He made the right right, he subsumed the wrong. He made our home a dreamland where he could play however he wanted. He was really mean. I don’t think anybody liked him. So one day, I remember it, they decided to hurt him.

Please, go on.

Someone was really mad at him so they hurt him. A gold man? Or I think it was a woman? Or maybe more than one person? She hit him. They hit the old man and split open his head. Then everything would go back to normal. That was the dream. A dream to end the nightmare. But it didn’t.

Pause.

I think that everybody really liked him. Those first few days everybody was really sad. They’d get close to the Lucid to try and help the old man, and then they’d see he was hurt and they’d become weepers. They didn’t stop crying. Nobody stopped crying. They cried and cried and cried until there was nothing left in any bit of them except dust. Then they stopped crying. I think the old man remembered that getting hurt was sad. And crying makes you so tired, doesn’t it? They cried when they fell asleep forever. I think it was probably the tears. Drinking the tears is like crying and it made them fall asleep faster. Then the sky started crying. It must have been so sad for the old man it turned into a weeper itself. And then everyone drank the tears. It was all that was left. Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink. Everyone got sleep full. Some of us got sleep less. And then the world drowned with everyone else. Do you think the stars are still up there? Did they run away with the moon and the sun? Or did they fall asleep cause they were so sleep full like everyone else? I used to watch the stars, I think…

Come back to me, you mentioned a dream? What do you mean by this being a dream?

That’s what he called us. He said he must’ve fallen asleep, he was so old, and we were his dream. He said he was a lucid dreamer, read a book or two on it, and so he could make up the rules of his dream. I don’t know why he called us that. I don’t think we’re a dream. I remember being here before we became his dream…

I think I was the one who drowned the world… Or maybe that was just a bad dream… Why doesn’t anyone dream us a better world anymore?
