Item #: SCP-4085

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: The Object is immobile and seemingly without a will of its own. However, the room containing the device must allow for enough room so that a single human can appear in its near vicinity. As failing to so can and will cause destruction of user[s]

The room housing the object should conform to standards regarding housing of adult humans.
Furthermore, it should be noted that the room should at least appear more welcoming than dangerous, lest research and interviews might become difficult, do to the nature of the device's use.

Due to ethical evaluations while testing SCP-4085, it has been deemed
necessary to keep the layout and design of the room, unchanged at all times while testing is ungoing.

Description: The anomalous object fits the description of an electronic chip-key. It's 4 cm long 3 cm broad and 4 mm thin. It is tear shaped, Gray and has the word "Next," written centrally on one side leaving the back side blank. The writing is surrounded by a circular 1 mm deep engraving.
The composition of the devises materials are: 84.55% plastic, 10% copper, 3.55% unknown alloy and 1.9% non-specific insulation material

The composition is always the same, but types of plastic vary as with purity of the copper.

Inside the plastic-casing a thin copper spool, 2 mm wide, runs along the outlying circumference of the engraved circle. The spool connects to an unknown metal square in its middle. No further study has been made, due to the wishes of its users and the potential value.

use:

This Item is still undergoing tests regarding use. 14 unique attempts have been performed.

SCP-4085, dubbed "Key-Next" can shift a user to another equivalent dimension akin to the one he activated it in. In turn with the user's sudden disappearance, a user from another equivalent dimension will appear in his place. Though often sharing most resemblances, various minor details, like IQ, gender, experience and personality, seem to shift at random. Though not proven, it's likely that both users have to activate the device simultaneously, instantaneously swapping them both.

it has not yet been predicted were a user ends up or with what kind of version of them self they swap with. It has not yet been determined how many same specific dimensions there is to ours. No test subject has returned.

The key seems to be accessible to the first human coming into contact with it, after a former user dies.

In accordance with the Ethics committees specifications, only suicidal versions of users or versions who confess to a first degree crime will be relived of testing privileges

Test subject: Mariel H. Roberts Civilian Age: 22

First known contact with Key-Next (SCP-4085) was by a 22 years young woman. her dead body was found at 314 Grasselli Street. Bedford. Her death being the result of exposure to an unknown disease; which was why the Foundation got involved. A Pizza delivery was averted. The sickness contained and eliminated.

A Journal written by the late user of the Key-Next, was found while a hazmat team searched her home for contaminants. It revealed a list of places people and events, and how they differentiated from each other, Underlining pros and cons. Seemingly a traveller's guide to Similar but different places.

These extracts have been provided to give basis for analysis of implications regarding use:
Relevant entries only:

Day 1. World 1.
I was going to wash my clothes at the new laundromat today. I was going to visit my parents this weekend. Dad is always strict with cleanliness. When i used my chip to pay for the wash, suddenly i wasn't at the laundromat any more at all. I was home- at my parents. I was in my room, which should have been remodelled and made into a guest room… skip… My Dad did't even mention my apparel. I was in my last "clean" clothes still. Mom had already gone to work, Dad made me eggs and beacon. I was scared at first, but everything is just kinda alright?

Day 10. World 1.
Things are not all good. Mom is stressed out over work and drinks too much. Dad is nice, but he is not helping? At some point while i travelled from the laundromat, to here? he up and quit his Job! Mom says it's so he can find him self again, but.. i don't think dad is finding anything at all but time to waste. Is it weird that i feel he should dress more like.. dad?

Day 2. World 2.
I went down to the laundromat again. Before i got there, just fiddling with my chip-key, suddenly i changed places again. I don't know why i wanted to try to get away again, but.. maybe i didn't just magically teleport home. Maybe i magically teleported to another world? I just want to go home really. Some of my old friends didn't even know me… skip… I miss having someone to talk to, i miss having my own place to live. I liked being treated like a guest at a hotel again, at home, but.. maybe i just outgrew that part of my life already. Anyway. I Don't know were i am right now, and i miss Andrew.

Day 13. World 30.
I have been shifting a lot. Sometimes to find my way back to a place i know. Sometimes i just try to find a better place with better people. Right now i have a boyfriend, about 10 friends in to groups, i live at the edge of town and.. i have a Job.. My parents are dead… Skip… My boyfriend Jake wants a baby. I'm thinking of skipping this place. Is that bad? I just never thought I would make for a very good mom. Maybe it's better that i go somewhere else before i mess this place up for my self? Will i still be here when i go? Do i slowly deplete the multiverse of.. me's?

Day 1. World 50-70?
I can't find a problem that won't solve it self, if i just find another place where it didn't happen.
And.. in any case, people don't change much. I can adapt. I seldom find that i have chosen a different pin code or password. I keep everything i carry when i travel. Some days i just withdraw a lot of cash and make a shift… Skip… maybe I'm not changing places, maybe I'm just changing the world. In a way i might be making the world a better place, just by searching for a better world.

Day.. something. World 100.
I found a weird place, with weird people. But. I met Mishelle! she was doing so good, she never started smoking, she never got pregnant, and we just clicked right back. I think i really missed her, more than i wanted to admit. I wonder if.. maybe i liked her more than i wanted to admit… Skip
Though Mishelle is doing good (I'm doing good too) My other friends are a bit.. weird. They talk way too laud, they push each other and me spontaneously. There is this tension all the time. I don't feel at ease when I'm out with them.

World 100.
I was walking home with a guy i know. I don't know why, but he just got angry out of nowhere. He demanded that i gave him my money, and when i didn't.. he jumped me! I got angry too- Scared, but mostly angry. I just kept hitting him, he slipped at some point and fell backwards into a ditch. I kicked him while he was down and he didn't get up. i don't know what to do.

Day 1. World 101.
Everything is better now. They just went mad, all of them. I don't know if they knew i killed Matthew, but one day they just ganged up on me while we were hanging out at Thomas place. They beat me up and stole my things. They stripped me down and made me wear a sort of costume- I think i was supposed to look like Mishelle. I was kept like some sort of pet. They didn't do anything horrible, but i couldn't stand it. I felt so degraded. I wanted my freedom back… Skip… One day i was alone with Jessy. She gave me food and water. Made me do some "tricks" She made me angry. when she showed the chip-key and asked me what it was for I launched my self at her. I was not at my strongest, but i was strong enough to topple that powdered frog of a.. anyway i got it back from her. I tossed the stupid costume at her while she just lied there looking Dummer than usually. When i skipped i found my self in my bed. I was in my underwear. I'm still not convinced that some of my memories right now are anything more than a bad dream. I don't know what i want any more.

Day 25. World 101.
There is so few people in the city. I didn't notice at first.. i have been keeping to my self. A lot. Mostly i just went to the gas station for groceries. It was closed all day yesterday and haven't opened today. I remember how much traffic there usually is early in the morning. I only saw ten cars driving around, five was the same kind with the same Colour. I found an open shop and asked what was happening. The old man behind the counter said something about flu-season. He didn't look too good him self, i think i better wash my apples. Wouldn't be nice to get sick.

Day 30. World 101.
I'm Sick. Everyone is sick. Nothing is moving outside, the city is sleeping, and i'm running out of food. Deliveries are expensive, and i don't really use that much energy lying around doing nothing anyway.

Day 1. World 102
I'm fucking hungry and i don't care for the price of a Pizza if it's more than a moth pay. So i found a place where people are not sick, and where i can get a god damn Pizza. I'm so annoyed. My body aces all over. I'm a sweat machine. Dizzy. I will call for a Doctor too i guess.

End of Journal

By the seemingly random and different kinds of clothes found in her apartment, it would seem the house has been a hub for Mariels. No further visits of Mariels has since been made though.
The Mareil estate is under further investigation.

  • Case nr.: 2.

Test subject: Kevin M. Smith Class C personnel Age: 34

As is standard procedure with extraction of an unknown item, nobody had been in physical contact with the item. The first person to make human contact with the device was Kevin M. Smith. A Researcher with no prior great experience. The Key-Next assignment was meant to be his first, as it didn't appear to be active, and first thought to be linked to It's first user or just people named Mariel.

When Kevin M. Smith carelessly unpacked the Key-Next however, he limitedly swapped. The man found in his office looked much like him, but was clad in dirty clothes and bore clear signs of malnourishment.

An offer of new clothes a bath and a hot meal was enough to persuade the dirty-Kevin to an interview.

And i didn't know much about money. I lost my way…

Interviewer: Please continue. Tell me about your past. Did you ever have a Job utilizing your knowledge?

Kevin: Sorry. I just… Yes i had a job. I think. I had some letters. they were non-specific, but detailed some assignments i think involved me. My head is not so good though. I Don't remember much anything at all about it at all. sorry.

Interviewer: Does the Letters "S.C.P" mean anything to you.

Kevin: No

Kevin: Noo.. I Don't- i have never taken anything. I don't do drugs. And I don't like to disturb people i don't know. I know I'm not easy to look at right now. I Just want to help people.

Interviewer: Can you show me your belongings? I would like to see if you may have what would look like a key-chip. It might explain how you got here

Kevin: I Promise I didn't break in here.. but i guess that doesn't matter, I'm here now. Sorry. All i have on me is my wallet and my key chain. I- yes i do have a Chip, one of those plastic disks right?

Closing Statement: The new Kevin M. Smith looked to be more lucky in his life choices. Clean, His eyes less closed, clothed, not smelling. He looked me in the eyes and promptly swapped. We have located an ever changing stream of Kevins to a cell now. They don't seem very interested in a reality were they are in capture.

Test subject: Tyler J. Duncan Class E personnel

Tyler J. Duncan, former class D personnel, was exposed to SCP ████ and thus deemed practically unusually for any further testing of any sort. Permission was granted to see if a new Tyler J. Duncan could be produced, and if the likely trouble of having him staying could be solved.

Knowing the low likelihood of his return, a pardon was formulated to the extend that he cooperated with the experiment. Subject agreed to the terms of service.

Interviewer: Hello Tyler. Do you know were you are?

Tyler: Hello Doctor. I'm not sure were I am, but… i would guess we are deep underground in a Secret facility under direct administration of the SCP Foundation.

Interviewer: Do you know why you are here?

Tyler: …No. but i know i work here, just, not here. I have an Office above ground.

Interviewer: You do not have an Office here. you have changed places from were you was before.

Tyler: I have already said too much then

Interviewer: No, not at all. you are within a SCP site.

Tyler: Then what do you make of the letters "H.G.B"

Interviewer: That has no meaning to me. you have been swapped with another version of your self, he has taken your place and you his.

Tyler: Why would he willingly do that if that was true?! why would he Leave? That doesn't make sense. I'M important!

Interviewer:

Tyler:

Interviewer: He was a convict and had come into contact with something… unpleasant.

Tyler: What did.. he do?

Interviewer: Killed a man. A bar fight- days before he was to report to duty here anyway. We altered his personal classification. kept him as D personnel.

Tyler: Ah.. I never really ingested alcohol my self.

Interviewer: I'm sorry.. did you have a good- life?

Tyler: I did.

Interviewer: I have.. some.. good or bad news

Tyler: Am i to continue as D class personnel?

Interviewer: no. Not as such. but we have a request. you see, we really only get to talk to the second version visiting. And you are it.

Tyler: Am i to swap with someone else?

Interviewer: It's that or a high chance of test privileges ceasing.

Tyler: I see

Interviewer: yes. So- I have a coded list for you. Your mission is simple: give it to another Foundation in another world. It's contents are Dangerous SCP's we have contained. Reality bending and dimension altering; exempt. You might be able to do a lot of good out there.

Tyler: It's a good plan. not morally complicated ether. what's the catch?

Interviewer: We would like you to look trough a list of SCP's and tell us if you can add to it. Don't get discourage that they are… of little importance. We still don't know how well we can trust other.. Versions.

Tyler: I Will cooperate.
