SCP-XXXX: A Beautiful Symetry
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX and an instance of SCP-XXXX-2 are to be digitally encrypted with Level 3 access on a hard drive contained within secure servers at Site 15. Researchers conducting studies on SCP-XXXX are to avoid contact with SCP-XXXX-2 if possible, and are to undergo a psychological evaluation at the earliest convenient date post-exposure. Any digital material outside of the copies in Site 15 should be secured and neutralized.
Description:
SCP-XXXX is a mathematical equation that was discovered by Professor Jacob Klein of the University of Oxford''s Mathematical Institute, and was first contained initially by MTF Eta-10 "See No Evil." Refer to Addendum 0-1 for information regarding Prof. Klein.
SCP-XXXX in of itself is not dangerous; However, it incites a high level of curiosity in any individual who learns of it. Persons affected by SCP-XXXX will attempt by all means necessary to produce SCP-XXXX-2, even if said persons possess no mathematical background. So far, all persons affected have successfully produced SCP-XXXX-2 unless they were intercepted.
XXXX-2 is a Sierpinski pedal triangle. Upon viewing SCP-XXXX-2, the individual previously affected by SCP-XXXX will return to their previous task(s), with no measurable difference in cognitive or physical abilities. However, testing on D-Class personnel affected by clinical depression and bipolar disorder resulted in an immediate reported feeling of calm and general happiness. These effects appeared to last for roughly three days after exposure, after which previous symptoms would return. Repeated testing shows no negative effects.
When asked about SCP-XXXX-2, affected persons will remark on how beautiful it was, then either continue on about its significance or say that it was nice to experience, but that they don't care much about it, now. Responses appear to vary depending on an individual's experience with fractal mathematics or art pieces that frequently feature repeating patterns (i.e. nature pieces, simple repeating shapes, etc.), and their general interest in more abstract mathematical concepts.
Further research is being conducted by Foundation psychiatrists into the positive effects of SCP-XXXX-2. So far, it has been shown to generally alleviate feelings of anger, stress, disgust and sadness. Long-term exposure tests are still being conducted; However, as seen previously, no negative impacts have been observed, and the strength of SCP-XXXX-2's effects do not appear to weaken.
Regarding Professor Jacob Klein, Site 15 director ████ ███ decided that observing him in the field would both allow more data to be gathered on SCP-XXXX's nature and make his containment simpler. As a result, Klein was amnesticized using Class C Targeted Retrograde amnestics, and was implanted with a directive not to spread knowledge of SCP-XXXX outside of a secure computer monitored by Site 15.
Refer to Addenda 0-1 through 0-3 for information regarding Prof. Klein and his research into SCP-XXXX and SCP-XXXX-2. Refer to Addendum 1-1 for a rightup from Researcher Kip Law regarding the results of long-term exposure research, and Addendum 1-2 for a threat reassessment by Dr. Northrop.
Addendum 0-1: As of 5/16/2020, Prof. Jacob Klein is currently being monitored by Site-15 personnel remotely as he continues research on SCP-XXXX-2. After three months of repeated exposure, Klein is not manifesting any additional anomalous symptoms; So far, he has discovered nothing extraordinarily significant about SCP-XXXX or SCP-XXXX-2.
Addendum 0-2: On 6/12/2020, undercover Site-15 personnel conducted an interview with Prof. Klein. He reported feeling amazing and stress-free, even though he's been dedicating many hours to his work. He was not perturbed by a lack of interesting results on SCP-XXXX or SCP-XXXX-2; Rather, he said he's okay with it, and that even discovering it was a blessing.
Addendum 0-3: On 12/16/2002, Prof. Klein dropped his research on SCP-XXXX and SCP-XXXX-2. On 12/29/20, Site 15 director ████ ███ ordered cessation of observation on Klein, no longer deeming him a threat.
Addendum 1-1: A six month exposure test on D-Class personnel D-182, D-199, and D-212 has shown no negative effects. Subjects were exposed to SCP-XXXX-2 once every 72 hours, and were allowed to stay in a standard cell with Foundation amenities. At the time of administering, subjects were interviewed, and reported no negative emotions. D-182, who is affected by clinical depression and bipolar disorder, said she hadn't experienced any symptoms of her illnesses since the tests began. Research personnel took precautions to ensure they were not exposed to SCP-XXXX-2, and were successful.
Results of this research will be shelved for the time being. As far as I or any of my staff can tell, SCP-XXXX-2 is the opposite of malicious; It's effects are nothing but positive. Do to its nature, I would greatly encourage further research into clinical applications. Its rare we find an anomaly with the potential to help people- Plus, more knowledge can never hurt.
Addendum 1-2: Upon request from Researcher Law, I have reviewed the testing conducted with SCP-XXXX-2 and its effects. While it appears harmless, and could indeed be used for good, I have reached the conclusion that SCP-XXXX is just fine where it is at Site 15. Our goal is to secure, contain, and protect, not to heal- Maybe, in a different Foundation, we could put this to use. For now, though, this won't be a skeleton waiting in our closet.
