Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Proceedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a locked air-tight container at all times in a non-ventilated room. All personnel handling SCP-XXXX must be equipped with hazardous materials equipment and respirators. Any and all equipment and items of clothing that have come into contact with SCP-XXXX must be washed down with a strong solvent, securely locked in air-tight containers, and incinerated as soon as possible. Personnel who come into direct contact with SCP-XXXX are to be quarantined until the effects of SCP-XXXX have manifested and passed, incinerating the body immediately thereafter.

In the event that a personnel survives the effects of SCP-XXXX, they are to be placed under a full quarantine whilst medical personnel diagnose any damage to the heart and surrounding cardiovascular system and flush out the respiratory system with a non-toxic solvent. The affected person is to be administered a Class-C amnesiac as soon as possible and monitored for signs of physiological and emotional trauma.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a clear liquid perfume contained in a small brown and blue 100ml bottle branded with the Calvin Klein logo. Despite the branding, the description of SCP-XXXX doesn't match the description of any product ever manufactured by Calvin Klein. SCP-XXXX can be sprayed from the bottle by depressing the nozzle atop the bottle. The smell of SCP-XXXX is commonly described as being sweet and fruity with a hint of cinnamon. Chemical analysis of SCP-XXXX has determined a higher than usual presence of aromatic compounds compared to the contents of similar perfumes, though it is unknown if this has any relation to the anomalous effects produced by SCP-XXXX.

Upon smelling the odours of SCP-XXXX, affected subjects typically begins to feel a sense of pleasant nostalgia and a warm yearning for old times. This feeling intensifies over the course of around 10 minutes, though has been seen to manifest itself in as little as 3 minutes. Upon reaching and maintaining this peak sense of euphoria, affected subjects transition into what could be described as a 'comedown'. In this state, affected subjects will initially feel sad and distressed, ranging from a slight sadness to breaking down into tears. Test subjects have attributed this feeling of sadness to the truth that they will never be able to relive their old memories. The comedown then transitions from a feeling of sadness to a feeling of anger, in which the affected subject begins to scream and lash out violently. Test subjects have been seen to punch walls, bang on doors, and commit acts of self-harm. After this, the comedown transitions into a steadily intensifying depressive state, in which the affected subject will commonly sit down on the floor, head in hands, completely motionless and speechless. This comedown has been seen to last in the range of 20 minutes to 40 minutes. It is unknown at this time if the dosage has any effects on the times taken for the effects to manifest themselves. The comedown period will last until the final effects of SCP-XXXX begin to take hold.

As the end of the comedown period approaches, an ache will be felt in the chest of affected subjects. This ache will increase in intensity to the point where the subject are commonly observed screaming in agony for several minutes. Autopsies on test subjects have attributed this ache to the onset of acute Takotsubo cardiomyopathy1, which has so far ended fatally for everyone observed to be affected. Autopsies have also revealed that the onset is due to the severe emotional and psychological trauma brought on by exposure to SCP-XXXX, and not due to SCP-XXXX itself. This final period has been observed to last in the region of 1 minute to 5 minutes.

It has been shown that the effects of SCP-XXXX do not take place until it has actually been detected by smell. For a healthy adult this equates to a concentration of approximately 10 ppm at RTP. It has also been observed that individuals with anosmia2, are not affected by SCP-XXXX (see Addendum SCP-XXXX-b). From this it can be deduced that the effects of SCP-XXXX are of a memetic nature, and not chemical.
