Special Containment Procedure:
SCP-XXXX is contained at Site M17-9-ALPHA, 78km (48.5m) from the nearest population center and 2km (1.2m) into the crust. Agreements with local and federal authorities are required to prevent occupation within at least a 50km (31m) radius around this facility. This region is off limits to all but class U personnel, which are explicitly trained and uniquely informed in ways that solely qualify them to contain SCP-XXXX.
Anyone recovered in this exclusion zone are to be transported to Site M17-9-ALPHA immediately for containment. They will be interrogated thoroughly before being administered the ANKER Test. If found to be Unclaimed, they are administered Class A amnesics and released.
Following the uncontrolled level 10 “Exponential Conversion” event [STRICKEN], all Claimed are to be terminated on the spot.
Class U personnel are never to stay in the facility at Site M17-9-ALPHA or the surrounding exclusion zone for longer than 20 hours in a 48 hour period. Personnel are not permitted to enter the zone more than two days concurrently.
In the event that an individual loses consciousness while in the exclusion zone, concentrated adrenaline compounds are available in the designated cabinets located throughout the facility in every hallway and room. Additionally, all transportation to and from the facility contains multiple adrenaline kits. These are to be administered immediately by stabbing the syringe directly into the heart.
For the safety of all Class U personnel, individuals are never allowed to be alone. In the event that it is unclear how long an individual has been unconscious, or if unconscious for over 5 minutes, the individual should immediately be administered the ANKER test. If failed, it is critical that they be terminated immediately.
SCP-XXX is contained in a naturally occurring chamber in a limestone cavern that does not connect with other cave systems or the surface. This chamber is isolated, and is approximately 50m long and 45 meters wide. A small reservoir of water takes up over half of the floor. It is 10 meters (32 feet) deep. Sensors closely monitor SCP-XXXX at all times; although its physical activity is minimal.
Description:
SCP-XXXX is a large arthropoidal creature that resides in the deep freshwater pond of a cave system far beneath the surface of the Earth. The organism is approximately 7.6 meters (25 feet) tall and 2 meters (6.5 feet) wide. It's large thorax is lined with small jointed arms from top to bottom, giving it the approximate appearance of a centipede. Each appendage is approximately 1.5 meters (5 feet long). It's face is large and shielded with a spider-like maw and a cranial crest that resembles that of a triceratops'. SCP-XXXX is has never been found to move; spending its time submerged in the darkness of its pond.
The creature is far too large to escape its confinement. It is non-reactive to those that enter its enclosure. As a result, physical containment procedures are minimal; focusing solely on preventing unauthorized entry by personnel.
SCP-XXXX is believed to be the adult form of an otherwise unknown taxon. The organism has most likely just reached maturity, which coincides with the danger it represents. It has been growing in this enclosed cavern system for several millennia; possibly longer. How it got here is unknown, as the cavern system is completely enclosed from the outside world, save for small fissures that receive and drain gases and water.
SCP-XXXX is a significant cognitohazard. It is a danger to any human within the exclusion range. This range has steadily been increasing. Prolonged exposure of more than 20 hours within a 48 hour period will invariably result in unconsciousness. Boarding or otherwise sleeping within the exclusion zone is also strictly forbidden.
Unconsciousness of any kind is extremely dangerous in the exclusion zone. When unconscious, the mind altering affects of SCP-XXXX begin to manifest. It is unknown exactly how this creature molds a sleeping mind, but the result is self-evident. Given enough time, a human will awake as an instance of SCP-XXXX-1, or “Claimed”. The change is subtle. It is not yet known if the victim is even aware of what has happened, or if they continue life as normal; until symptoms of the change appear. They may even be merely an imitation of their former selves, from a cognitive perspective.
The first known instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are believed to be the [STRICKEN] Paleo Indians of [STRICKEN] national park approximately 6000 BC. The effects of SCP-XXXX were far less severe then, merely resulting in the birth of a small religious cult. These affected humans were driven to worship SCP-XXXX as a god, resulting in extensive cave paintings honoring the creature. It is unknown if these humans directly saw SCP-XXXX, but their paintings of the organism show a radically different looking creature. This may suggest that SCP-XXXX has gone through a metamorphosis as it matures; which has also grown its influence.
The creature was first located and isolated in 19[ ]. By this time, the primary cognitohazardous affects of SCP-XXXX were well known to the SCP foundation. Several months earlier, an incident occurred in the town of [STRICKEN], which was located 5.7 km (3.4 miles) from Site M17-9-ALPHA. Multiple visitors to the town were reported missing. The increasing disappearances, and a lack of any meaningful cooperation from local law enforcement, resulted in the opening of a federal investigation. Local officials were notably unhelpful in this process, and frequently appeared to be misdirecting the effort. Soon, several trusted investigative team members seemed to side with the locals in hampering the ongoing investigation. As a result, the SCP foundation was alerted to begin our own investigation.
One of the federal agents, B-045, was captured and detained by covert unit Omega-02X. Dr. Anker directed the following test procedures. During the interrogation, the cadence and answers from B-045 showed what can best be described as a cult-like infatuation with the locals and their privacy. As part of the investigation, a battery of physical tests was performed that included attaching a brainwave monitor. It was found that the brain wave pattern of subject B-045 periodically collapsed into that of someone in stage 3 REM sleep. This occurred when discussing certain topics related to events in the town.
Multiple approaches were taken to identify the source of the anomalous change in behavior seen in B-045. A specialized tuning device, designated D89-Omega, detected rhythmic pulses of electromagnetic waves emanating from underground. These waves showed characteristics common with brain waves. Omega-02X team was immediately pulled from [STRICKEN] in an abundance of caution. The presumed effect of these waves was deemed to be a cognitohazard from this point on. Further exposure to these waves was strictly limited; indefinitely.
The process of detecting anomalous brain wave patterns while questioning B-045 was refined and termed the ANKER test. The ANKER test was applied to every town inhabitant, in addition to a control group of 47 D-Class Personnel, and 16 randomly-selected SCP researchers. The ANKER test found all 612 inhabitants and former federal agents from the town to be affected. All controls were found to be normal. Of those designated the "Claimed", 574 were immediately terminated. The remaining subjects were isolated for further testing.
Soon after the mass termination, a change in the strength of the electromagnetic signal was detected. The gravitas of this fact was initially misconstrued as the removal of the Claimed from proximity to the source of the signal. This mistake would later prove to bring about what may have been an apocalyptic event, designated Catastrophic Proliferation 1 (PRO-CAT-1).
While it was clear SCP-XXXX's electromagnetic emanations were gradually growing in power and range, it only became clear after PRO-CAT-1 that this range was greatly extended by every Claimed individual. Each Claimed became a biological signal booster. This would create a runaway, exponential increase in SCP-XXXX's capability to alter human minds to fit its will.
Our failure to terminate 38 individuals from the initial event would prove to be a mistake. Further so-called excursion events would amplify SCP-XXXX's signal such that it reached a major city, [ ], with over a million inhabitants. Luckily, at this time, the process of turning a healthy human into an instance of SCP-XXXX-1 was a slower process. It would take several nights of exposure for individuals to lose their own will. This is in contrast to current time, where this molding of the mind can begin to manifest within minutes.
Despite the strict rules preventing sleep at Site M17-9-ALPHA, it was not understood that the increasing power of SCP-XXXX allowed it to induce unconsciousness; as it assaulted the mind during consciousness. All personnel and detained subjects were terminated to end PRO-CAT-1 with little time to spare to contain the excursion event.
As a result, the termination of SCP-XXXX was ordered. Healing factors were immediately apparent in a manner similar to SCP-682. Additionally, after the first attempt to kill SCP-XXXX, it began to emit a powerful localized electormagnetic brain wave pattern that damages robots and renders human unconscious. Attempts at new methods of termination are ongoing and considered top priority. In the interim, the U-Class personnel designation was created and designed with the sole purpose of containing SCP-XXXX as safely as currently possible.
The range of SCP-XXXX has grown exponentially since its discovery, even without the help of Claimed that extend its range. This proves to be an incredible threat to all intelligent life on Earth. Even though the ultimate goals of this creature are unknown, the effects are clear; complete loss of one's own will and sense of self. Within a decade, it is expected that the sphere of influence will extend beyond the current exclusion zone, breaking our capabilities of covert containment. Should containment fail, the exponential growth of its sphere of influence could engulf the entire planet in mere days.
Addendum DW-U-78:
Several U-Class personnel report hearing vibrations in their skull that their eardrums translate into some type of whisper. The whisper is incomprehensible, drawn out, and has been described as similar to steam being released from a pipe. Those that have sensed this phenomenon also report a numbing sensation in their heads that makes it difficult to concentrate.
