Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: !!conprocs !!Exploration of Class-Gamma zones is strictly prohibited by order A20641 due to high rates of fatality and psychological trauma.
Description: SCP-XXXX is the island of !!, located at !!coordinates off the coast of !!. The island is currently host to a Gamma-class anomalous zone1 as a result of Foundation efforts to neutralize SCP-XXXX-1. As of !!date, this zone appears to be stable, with no signs of expansion or decay.
SCP-XXXX is the former site of Project GAIA, an experiment run by Prometheus Labs in 1997 involving the use of an AI for public administration. A !!timedevice was used to accelerate local time to reduce the experiment's runtime and decrease upkeep costs; one hour within the zone was equal to 28 minutes outside of SCP-XXXX !!cleanup. The destruction of the device during !!operation lead to SCP-XXXX's current state. See Addendum for further details.
Project GAIA: GAIA-01 (Governing Authority Intelligence Agent 01) was a Class-V general intelligence construct. Due to the limitations of the computing technology of the time, sapience was granted through the implantation of a human soul. This had the side effect of giving the construct human-like emotions. While this would be undesirable in many cases, the researchers deemed that empathy would be necessary for the AI to accomplish its tasks. Because implantation of adult souls often leads to the construct destabilizing due to sensory deprivation, souls were acquired through partnership with [DATA EXPUNGED].

Date: 1998/2/26
Participants:
- Dr. Isaiah Thompkins, Site Director, Foundation Site-22
- Paxton Vischer, Junior Researcher, Prometheus Labs
Notes: On 1998/2/25, Foundation agents received contact from a Prometheus Labs employee. Once taken into custody, the employee demanded Foundation assistance in containing a rogue AIC. By this time, [DATA EXPUNGED] had caused internal chaos within PL, and the corporation would be dissolved by the end of the year.
VISCHER: H-hello? Is this Dr. Thompkins?
THOMPKINS: So you're the Prometheus boy who's been banging down my door. What do you want?
VISCHER: I-I need some help. We were working on a research project on this island in !!location, but something's gone wrong.
THOMPKINS: Wonderful. I'll add it to the list.
VISCHER: Dr. Thompkins, this is serious. We were experimenting with putting an artificial intelligence in charge of a group of volunteers. She was doing well at first, but-
THOMPKINS: "She?"
VISCHER: Uh, the AI. GAIA. We call her a "she" because of the name, and because we were told the soul was harvested from a female-
THOMPKINS: Get to the point.
VISCHER: R-right. She's configured to send us status updates every week, and we can talk to her if we need to. But she's stopped talking to us over a week ago, and the logs have gotten… disturbing. It looks like she may have killed at least one of the volunteers.
THOMPKINS: You forgot to add a killswitch?
VISCHER: No, there is one, but I can't make changes to the program alone. Only the project lead or a department manager can. I've tried contacting every manager I had a number for, and I haven't gotten a single response. Prometheus is a madhouse right now.
THOMPKINS: Acutely aware. My phone has been ringing off the hook for days. And the project lead?
VISCHER: He's dead. They found him hanging in his apartment Monday morning.
THOMPKINS: Oh.
VISCHER: Look, I wouldn't be coming to you if I thought I had any other option. But there are fifty people stuck on an island with a rogue AI, and I may be the only person left who knows it.
THOMPKINS: You are aware that this project will become Foundation property, right? And you aren't off the hook either. We won't be releasing you until we are certain you won't be a threat to normalcy yourself.
VISCHER: I-I'm willing to accept that. Just get them out of there.
THOMPKINS: Good. I make no promises for the volunteers, but this sounds like enough of a threat to normalcy to justify action. You will be working with us in the meantime. We need your familiarity with the project to get it under control. Once that is finished, then we'll decide what to do with you. Understood?
FISHER: Y-yes sir.
THOMPKINS: Good. Now send me everything you have on this "GAIA". We have some work to do.
