SCP-5974

Item #: SCP-5974

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-5974 is to remain secured inside the designated lead lock box. The key to the lock box is to be secured in the office of Dr. Gerweiss, lead research administrator. The lock box will be contained in secure storage onsite. SCP-5974 shall be restricted from research experiments unless clearance is requested through normal channels and granted by research administrator, Dr. Gerweiss or from Level 4 personnel or higher after refusal from Dr. Gerweiss. All D-class personnel involved with research into the anomalous properties of SCP-5974 shall be decommissioned via termination by onsite security personnel upon conclusion of experiments to prevent suicides which have caused injury to security personnel and damage to Foundation property as a result of the effects caused by SCP-5974. Research personnel shall be administered an A-class amnestic following completion of experimentation log, followed by a 48 hour quarantine to observe psychological health. At least two[2] level 3 Security personnel shall accompany researchers and D class subjects at all times during experimentation, while wearing designated eye protection. Under no circumstances is SCP-5974 to be left in a visible location and must be contained in its storage box immediately upon completion of research experiments.

Description:
SCP-5974 is a nondescript pair of pale pink tinted sunglasses. Individuals within 10 meters with a clear line of sight to SCP-5974 experience a feeling of intense curiosity and interest in acquiring and donning SCP-5974. Any individual wearing any form of eye-wear is immune to this compulsion. The mechanism behind this immunity remains unknown. As such research, security, and non critical staff in the vicinity are to wear ordinary reading glasses, unless already possessing and wearing prescription eyewear.

Upon wearing SCP-5974 subjects report feeling a sense of euphoria. All visual stimuli are regarded with a sense of wonder. Even mundane objects are awe inspiring to subjects. Subjects report experiencing colors as somatically stimulating sensations. SCP-5974 demonstrates an ability to render even visually grotesque and disturbing objects visually pleasing. Other senses, such as smell and taste, remain unaffected.

Upon seeing another human being, hereafter designated SCP-5974-1, through the lenses of SCP-5974, subjects immediately appear enamored and obsessed with SCP-5974-1. Subjects immediately attempt to decrease their distance from SCP-5974-1, resorting to violent means to close the distance between them. When separated by a physical barrier, subjects will attempt to circumnavigate the obstacle, and failing to do so, will attempt to destroy the barrier, even to the point of self injury and death.

When arriving within approx 2 meters of SCP-5974-1 subjects stop suddenly and stand still facing and staring intensely at SCP-5974-1. If SCP-5974-1 moves away from the subject, they will follow at a distance of approximately 2m. If the subject is interacted with by SCP-5974-1, they will respond in a typical manner appropriate to the subject though with reverence and adoration for SCP-5974-1. Any other attempt to interact with the subject by individuals other than SCP-5974-1 are casually rejected or completely ignored. Subjects will allow SCP-5974-1 to remove SCP-5974 from their face, but will react violently to stop any other individual from removing SCP-5974.

Once SCP-5974 is removed, subjects immediately display a negative affective state. Mental state of subjects rapidly deteriorates over a period of approximately 5 hours. The first cognitive and emotional symptoms to manifest are a melancholic demeanor, soft crying, and occasional sobbing. After approximately 2 hours depression begins to manifest with subjects sobbing uncontrollably, staring listlessly into space, and minor attempts at self injury including striking surfaces, superficial self mutilation, and holding their breath to the point of passing out. After approximately 4 hours the subjects begin demonstrating extreme depression resulting in screaming, shrieking, and sobbing. Finally, after 5 hours, subjects begin exhibiting suicidal behaviours, including running headlong into walls, sudden grabbing of security personnel weapons, and even attempting suicide through security protocol by attacking security personnel. If restrained, subjects will continue to attempt to end their lives, one subject going so far as to bite their own tongue off and intentionally choke on it, asphyxiating themselves.

Subjects demonstrate willingness to respond to verbal queries while wearing SCP-5974, provided there are no instances of SCP-5974-1, and are happy to extol the beauty of anything they see. It has been observed that when no other human being is visible to the subject, they will wander the containment cell, stopping to observe every item around them, regarding it with wonder and visual appreciation. While not overly forthcoming with verbal responses in the negative mental states, some subjects have reported that everything they see appears dull, distorted, and disturbing, filling them with sensations ranging from melancholy immediately after removal of the glasses, to existential nihilism within several hours.

If a subject dons the glasses after having been removed, the subject immediately returns to the euphoric state first manifested by SCP-5974. Doing so resets the subject of the SCP-5974-1 designation to be the first human being viewed after redonning the glasses. As SCP-5974 represents a threat only when donned or viewed by a human being, it is to remain secured in storage. Research into further anomalous properties is not recommended at this time.

Discovery:
Field operatives were alerted to a potential anomalous object following the suicide of [REDACTED], lead writer and singer of the band [REDACTED]. Upon further investigation, SCP-5974 was discovered to be responsible for the death of [REDACTED] and the cause of the odd relationship with his partner. When [REDACTED], subject to the effects of SCP-5974, allowed [REDACTED], an instance of SCP-5974-1, to remove SCP-5974, he entered the documented negative mental state and his suicide followed shortly thereafter. Field agents administered a class B amnestic to all individuals involved and a cover story of a disgruntled fan murdering the subject was implemented to quell public discovery of SCP-5974’s involvement in [REDACTED].
