Dr. Rivers
Sometime in 1999, Dr. Bright(B) was Directing at Site-19, when a recently promoted researcher(R) came to him.
R: “Hello. Dr. Bright, I presume. A pleasure to meet you, I have heard a lot about you”
B: “Hi… And who are you, exactly?”
R: “Oh, right, I forgot! My name is Dr. Richard Rivers. I am here to examine SCP-173”
B: “Do you have clearance to do so?”
R: “Of course I have! I requested the 05s to perform more in-depth testing and sample collection. And got approval”
Dr. Bright read over Rivers’ papers.
B: “I see… how long will your research take?”
R: “Not too long, at most 30 minutes”
B: “Well, I might be able to squeeze you in before my lunch break…”
R: “Don’t worry about that, none of our tests should be of any concern, in regards to breaches”
B: “Alright, then I’ll… Wait. Is that a gun in your pocket?”
R: “Hmm… Oh, my mistake I forgot I had that.”
B: “How do you forget you have a gun?”
R: “Well, I usually have a gun on my person at all times. But I thought I left it in my quarters”
The security guard(g) present spoke up.
g: “Dr. Bright. I happen to know this man. I can tell you personally that he is trustworthy. I don’t think disarming him, is necessary”
R: “Thanks, Henry, but I understand Bright’s position…”
Dr. Rivers pulled out his gun, then flipped the grip towards Bright.
R: “As I said, I didn't mean to bring it. I just want it back after I’m done”
B: “Thank you”
Bright put the gun into a drawer.
B: “Now, I’m going off to my break. Good luck Dr. Rivers”
Bright left the premises and Dr. Rivers began his tests. Three D-class were sent into 173s cell. They were instructed to analyze, take notes, and samples from 173.
Dr. Rivers thought to himself for a time. He began to talk to the Guard.
R: “It always seems like the most dangerous jobs are the most important…”
g: “The doors are sealed off”
R: “What!?”
g: “The doors are locked behind them. There’s no danger”
R: “What about those D-class?”
g: “I don’t think there’s much they can do to us…”
R: “I mean danger for them! The D-class! It doesn’t sit well with me”
g: “Well, that is why we have D-class”
R: “I guess…”
g: “It’s best not to get too attached to D-class”
R: “Hmm…”
He thought for a little while.
R: “I’ve got an idea”
g: “What is it?”
R: “The D-class aren’t going to know how to analyze as well as a researcher, like me. So why don’t I give them some guidance”
g: “You don’t mean… You’re not planning to go in there are you?!”
R: “I may be new to the Foundation, but I’ve faced off with some dangerous SCPs before. From inside 173’s cell, I’ll be able to analyze it with more depth. Plus I really want to see an SCP face to face in a controlled environment”
g: “Are you crazy! That is way too dangerous…”
R: “I’ll lock the door behind me!”
g: “…”
R: “Look, I understand why you’re concerned, but I can assure you. I wouldn’t suggest going in if I didn’t plan to live afterward. I ain’t suicidal, not in the slightest. I just don’t want to sit here while the men under my command go under fire without their commander. Of course, though, you have orders and protocol so, I don’t blame you if you won’t let me in”
g: “…You little bastard!… Alright, you’re a higher rank than me anyway”
R: “Thanks! Keep your walkie talkie on stand by for orders. And ah, keep an eye out for Bright. Just in case he comes back early”
Dr. Rivers went down towards 173’s cell. The door was opened by the guard. He entered the cell, to the surprise of the D-class.
R: “Hello again!”
j: “What are you doing here?”
R: “Well I’ve decided to assist with the study of 173”
The D-class that was taking samples(j) stared at Dr. Rivers for a while.
j: “Hmm… So what do you want me to do?”
R: “Just go back over by the others, and keep staring at 173… What’s your name, by the way?”
j: “D-5452”
R: “No, I mean your real name. You got one right?”
j: “Oh, hmm… Jack. Sorry, it’s been a while since anyone called me by my name.”
R: “Well, good to meet you, Jack!”
Dr. Rivers proceeded to take pictures, scratch grains of concrete into baggies, and extract samples of the spray paint. After he had finished, he paused and thought to himself for a bit. He then began to walk away from 173 while staring at the ground. Keeping one foot right behind the other, until he reached the opposite end of the room.
R: “Back out of the cell, like you were about to leave the cell. Then instruct the guard though the walkie talkie to close the cell doors. He should listen to you. Also, take my samples and notes with you. Don’t open the door until I give three clear knocks. Anything else, keep it closed.”
The D-class did as they were told, and Dr. Rivers was left alone with 173.
R: “Quite the specimen aren't you. No one knows where you come from or why you were made. So, I’m intrigued. I can’t help my curiosity, which is why I'm here. Luckily I can last 3.58 seconds without blinking so I can perform this test. Although, apart of me does question why I’m talking to you”
Dr. Rivers blinked intentionally. SCP-173 stops just in front of Dr. Rivers.
R: “Everything is governed by laws, even God Himself. I’m just glad to know your laws ahead of time… Maybe you can hear me?”
Dr. Rivers gave the knock and was let out unharmed. After fraternizing with the D-class, he returned to the guard. Upon his arrival, the guard immediately punched Dr. Rivers in the face.
R: “Ow! What was that for!?”
g: “Are you kidding! You could have gotten killed and caused a containment breach!”
R: “No I couldn’t have, the door was locked behind me!”
g: “…Smartass!”
R: “I made sure I was the only one in danger…”
The guard threw another punch that Dr. Rivers avoided.
g: “I could be shot if something happened to you!”
R: “Well if you were concerned about that, you probably just showed that I was responsible. You know, if I died, but I didn’t”
g: “…”
R: “Right, just make sure no one else knows about this…”
Dr. Bright entered the room. Looked at Dr. Rivers, then asked the guard.
B: “What the Hell did he do!”
R: “Why are you asking him? I’m the one who did it”
B: “What are you willing to tell me exactly?”
R: “Well, we took samples and performed tests. And no one got hurt”
B: “What ‘tests’ exactly and what do you mean by ‘we’?”
R: “Well, I sent in the D-class…”
g: “The guard already told me that you went in with the D-class. What did you do in 173’s cell?”
R: *sigh* "Too observant, I’m afraid. Well, I do hate to lie, so… I locked myself inside with 173… and blinked…”
B: “WHAT!”
g: “Wait, you didn’t tell me that!”
B: “Shut Up! And you!… I’m going to inform the 05s”
R: “Wait!”
B: “…”
R: “If you really think they need to know, I’ll go. I’m not afraid to be honest nor of consequences. Just know, I did everything to make sure that not even the D-class were at risk. Only me. For the sake of research, to uncover mysteries, no matter the personal cost. I’ll go without a fight. They probably already know anyway”
Dr. Bright paused and thought to himself for a moment
B: “Alright fine. I won't say anything. Nothing bad happened anyway”
R: “Thank you… Can I have my gun back?”
B: “Right”
Bright gave the gun back to Rivers. As Rivers left the room he turned back and said.
R: “You know, one of the D-class, D-5452, has your same first name”
B: “Really… wait, how did you?…”
R: “Gotta go! God Bless!”
Rivers went to his quarters and began to examine his findings. After performing a crude chemical test, he made a discovery.
R: “Well, that’s surprising. I haven't seen this since… I think I should put this into my personal study…”
