An instance of SCP-XXXX being engaged by Naval Task Force Gamma
Item #: SCP-4617
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: Naval Task Force Gamma is to track and neutralize wild instances of SCP-XXXX. Mobile Task Force Theta-5 ("The Bigger Boat") is to assist NTF Gamma when possible. The instance designated SCP-4617-A is to be immediately neutralized when sighted, and air support may be provided (see Addendum 02 for further information).
Three SCP-XXXX instances are kept in separate aquariums at Site-45. Each containment unit is to be outfitted with 3 cm of reinforced steel. Each instance is to wear specialized, electroshock harnesses restraining their mouths and tentacles.
Egg samples are kept in cryogenic storage in Freezer-11. Access to these eggs for testing is to be approved by Level-4 personnel.
Description: SCP-XXXX is an aquatic predatory species that are cephalopodic, and have elongated bodies. Specimens are commonly born with six to eight barbed tentacles although the number has been shown to vary.1 Instances also vary in size and are commonly one to two meters long.2 SCP-XXXX have large, black beady eyes located close to the mouth, and are roughly three centimeters in diameter.3 The mouth is beak-like and splits open into three parts that are lined with thin teeth. The mouth is located at the opposite end of the body from the tentacles. Their skin is a dark brown color, and the main body has a rough texture while the tentacles are smooth.
Instances have been observed to travel both in groups and alone. They often cooperate when engaging threats or while hunting.
Instances possess mild regenerative properties. For example, severing a tentacle will take approximately a week to regrow. It has been found that the process is significantly slower when outside of water.
SCP-XXXX instances are capable of traveling rapidly in water by using their tentacles to propel themselves.4 When hunting, instances propel themselves to stab prey with their mouths, and open their mouths to widen the wound they had inflicted.
At the back of the mouth, instances have a thin, elastic tongue that ends in three small, sharp appendages. Instances will quickly shoot it out to capture prey from a distance.
An egg that washed up from the ocean along with a deceased instance, which is not pictured.
Instances reproduce sexually in a manner similar to squids (Teuthida). After mating, both instances will lay small spherical eggs. Eggs of SCP-XXXX instances are partially transparent, and are filled with a dark blue, liquid substance. At early stages no embryo is visible within the egg until later as the egg begins to increase in size. The eggs are resilient to most damage inflicted such as blunt force, and withstanding pressure around 1000 psi. Exposure to high temperatures has shown to soften the egg, which allows other methods of neutralization to be applied. Eggs hatch after four weeks of incubation and will have a diameter between 10 to 13 cm.
SCP-XXXX came to Foundation attention after reports of civilian ships sinking, and sightings of "monster squids." Foundation agents responded and encountered an instance which escaped.
Addendum 01: Shortly after discovering SCP-XXXX, an undercover agent within the Global Occult Coalition reported the destruction of two naval vehicles involving an anomaly. The anomaly is believed to have been the origin of SCP-XXXX instances. Below are edited documents that were managed to be recovered.
Classification of the interdimensional anomaly is pending.
Addendum 02: Members of MTF Theta-5 were intercepting a group of SCP-XXXX instances within a submersible vehicle (designated as Nemo). Below is an excerpt between the pilot and command onboard the SCPF Pearl. The transcript has been edited for brevity.
Contact was lost with Nemo while equipment aboard the SCPF Pearl detected major seismic activity and heat. Forces present was ordered to retreat while imaging has shown an unprecedentedly large instance of SCP-XXXX emerging. No contact was made with the instance as it swam away. The crew aboard Nemo are considered lost, and the large instance has been classified as SCP-XXXX-A.
Currently, SCP-XXXX-A is being tracked, and collaboration with the Global Occult Coalition is pending.
Addendum 03: The following are collected observation logs of the three contained SCP-4617 (designated -1 through -3) instances. Also included are observations on uncontained instances.
Observational Log 4617-1 SUMMARY
Subject: SCP-4617-1
Preface: SCP-4617-1 was within a temporary holding chamber, and was observed via camera.
Observation Notes: SCP-4617-1 was noticed to have ceased its occasional struggle within its harness. The specimen remained idle before moving slightly closer to the small glass section of its aquarium. It places the tip of its mouth on the glass, and starts to spin to drill into the glass.
Researchers present within the containment area notice SCP-46171's behavior, and it is spinning faster. Cracks on the glass became visible and finally shatters. The specimen attempted to squeeze through the opening as water flows out, and succeeds to escape its containment. Though the instance is still restrained by the harness, and struggles to move.
Security arrives and reestablish containment.
Additional Notes: "Although this was not officially set up for observation, this incident provided intriguing data so it has been attached along with the observation logs." - Dr. Hashimura
Observation Log 4617-2 SUMMARY
Subject: SCP-4617-2
Preface: SCP-4617-2 was placed in a large aquarium, and had its harness removed, expect its collar. Guards were present with net launchers.
Observation Notes: The instance swam along the bottom near walls slowly for 17 minutes. It then briefly had one of its tentacles caress its collar. No shock was administered.
SCP-4617-2 proceeded to move to the surface. It observes the surrounding personnel viewing from the observation booths, and the guards standing on caged catwalks.
The specimen remains idle for approximately four minutes before shooting out its tongue toward the caged catwalk. With the appendages on the tongue, it grips the catwalk. No shock was administered to further observe the instance's action. The instance is briefly idle before attempting to pull itself up from the water to the catwalk with its tongue.
Instance noticeably struggles while it lifts itself, and begins to produce painful groans. The instance managed to lift most of its body out of the water before tears are noticeable at a section of the tongue. The shock collar was activated, and the instance fell back into the water.
Instance was returned to containment.
Observation Log 4617-3 Summary
Subject: An uncontained SCP-4617 instance.
Preface: Instance was observed by NTF Gamma while performing usual procedures. The instance was among other SCP-4617 instances.
Observation Notes: The SCP-4617 instance attacked task force agents aboard an assault boat, and it was noticed that in one tentacle it gripped a sharp pole. It used the pole to stab an agent in the leg before fleeing with it back into the water.
The instance was also observed to be directing other instances by deployed submersible combat drones. The instance fled before it was captured or neutralized.
Observation Log 4617-4 Summary
Subject: SCP-4617-3
Preface: SCP-4617-3 was placed in a aquarium with one egg sample. The sample was previously boiled to eliminate the possibility of an instance hatching, and it was 3 cm in diameter.
Observation Notes: The instance initially ignored the egg while it swam around the aquarium. It then briefly attacked the walls of the aquarium before ceasing.
The instance takes notice of the egg, and proceeds to grab it with its mouth. It then crushed the egg, and spat out the remains. It proceeded to swim toward the corner for the rest of the observation.
Additional Notes: "I hypothesize that what occurred was that it was testing the egg. Regular samples are shown to be very tough to crush so maybe that is how they identify their eggs. I am submitting a request for a healthy sample. I find this a great opportunity to observe their parenting skills." - Dr. Hashimura
Observation Log 4617-5 Summary
Subject: An uncontained SCP-4617 instance.
Preface: A submersible drone was sent into an underwater cave inhabited by an SCP-4617 instance.
Observation Notes: The drone traversed the cave, and came across a cave wall. On the wall, multiple carvings are present crudely depicting SCP-4617 instances surrounding a circle, along with unknown entities.
The drone traveled further into the cave, and found various items. Below is a list of several items found:
- A rusted car door
- Two propane tanks
- Pieces of a bicycle
- A tire
- Bones likely belonging to a whale
More circular carvings were also found, and eventually the drone stumbled upon the instance that inhabited the cave. It was using a jagged rock to carve on a wall, and beneath it was a pile of several eggs. It was noticed that the instance was repeatedly carving a new image of a circle with three arrows pointing inward.
The instance turned and spotted the drone. It dropped the stone it was using, and propelled itself toward the drone. The drone engaged and neutralized the specimen.
