SCP-4000: The Second Building

Item #: SCP-4000

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: The excavation site surrounding SCP-4000 is to be covered by camouflaged tarps suspended fifteen feet above the tallest point of the site. The 250-mile long fence surrounding the five-mile radius of the site’s exclusion zone is to be patrolled by at least 300 SCP Foundation security personnel camouflaged as soldiers of the Turkish military. The original structure of SCP-4000 is to be disrupted as little as possible, with exception of the container for SCP-4000-1which has been reinforced with modern technology and better understanding of the SCP.

SCP-4000-1 is to be granted a comfortable room with a simple lock on the door. SCP-4000-1 may be visited by any site archeologists, human resource personnel, or scientists provided they have properly scheduled their time with site manager Dr. Miray Demir. There is to be an initial ban on visits by anyone other than the site manager and head psychologist Dr. Franz Richter until SCP-4000-1 has recovered from surgery and can be taught English.

SCP-4000-1 is to be restrained by one-inch thick Kevlar straps to a padded hospital bed at all times and must be accompanied by at the very least three Foundation security personnel should SCP-4000-1 ever be removed from the cell. SCP-4000-1’s cell must itself be soundproofed and padded with no sharp or hard objects being allowed in without supervision from a three Foundation security personnel. SCP-4000-1 must remain sedated unless otherwise requested by site manager Dr. Miray Demir or the head psychologist Dr. Franz Richter.

Description: SCP-4000 is the remains of a twelve-thousand-year-old SCP containment facility that was discovered in southern Turkey in 2008 by a civilian team lead by German archeologist Klaus Schmidt. The excavation site, often informally referred to by staff as site Eden, is likely the second oldest complex human structure to ever be built. The age is of particular interest, considering how the site is located slightly [] miles northeast of Göbekli Tepe, which is likely the oldest complex human structure. Similar craftsmanship, age, aesthetic choices, and their close proximity has lead the SCP Foundation Department of Anomalous Archeology to believe that if the two structures were not created by the same individuals, then they were at least constructed by the same tribe or fledgling nation.

The structure is entirely made of stone, much of it appears to have been carved from a large hill, which is impressive given the primitive tools the builders were working with. Estimates given by archeologists approximate that it should have taken several decades to entirely carve it out of the segment of the hill, though the discovery of carved track marks suggest the initial excavation was completed in only a few years. There is evidence that there was also once a large outer building that connected to, and used stone from, the carved-out segment. The outer building had tall, curved roofs, using architectural techniques that wouldn’t be developed for thousands of years.

SCP-4000 was discovered during an expedition where Klaus Schmidt attempted to discover more artifacts belonging to the society that built the Göbekli Tepe, which Mr. Schmidt and his team had discovered twelve years prior. Unlike the ambiguous nature of the Göbekli Tepe, site Eden appeared to have a clear purpose to the Foundation agent covertly working with Schmidt. After this agent informed the Foundation, Schmidt and his team was given class C amnestics and the Foundation took over excavation efforts under the guise of a military radar base.

SCP-4000 has between 12 and 23 cells and pens, all of which were locked with primitive rope locks, all but one of which were found empty. Many of the empty cells were home to anomalous residues, such as traces of unidentifiable DNA, extreme levels of radiation, or extreme damage done to the interior of the cell in question. Investigation is currently ongoing to determine if any of the cells might have contained SCPs not currently in the captivity of the modern Foundation.

There is no writing anywhere within SCP-4000, as it had not yet been invented when it was constructed, though researchers were quick to recognize patterns between carved glyphs on walls and the anomalous residue in the cells. Often, the patterns were used in conjunction with one another, or with symbols that did not repeat elsewhere in the facility. Some of the symbols have been partly translated, such as circles surrounded by a vertical rectangle meaning either “invisible threat” or “do not look”. A complete list of the six most common pictographs, both translated and untranslated, can be found in addendum.1.

SCP-4000-1 is, in appearance, a human man of north African descent. The man is estimated to be at least as old as the structure, though possibly older. SCP-4000-1 was found within the cell that was the deepest carved into the hill. The passage to the cell had been blocked off several thousand years prior and had remained undisturbed until Foundation archaeologists removed the rubble. When found, SCP-4000-1’s was badly hurt, yet miraculously alive. His bones had been broken and healed back incorrectly multiple times, which led initial researches to believe the man was an entirely different species. After DNA was sampled and proved the man was indeed human, a series of corrective surgeries were undertaken to restore his body to functionality. It was found during surgery that much more had to be corrected than just the bones. Two hundred thirty-seven pieces of jagged rock had been broken off within multiple parts of his body, with most logged in his throat, heart, and brain. Once SCP-4000-1 had recovered from the corrective surgeries, the reasons for the severe damage to his body became apparent as he began to scream and began to bludgeon his own head with his dinner tray. This behavior is repeated nearly whenever SCP-4000-1 is conscious and is not heavily sedated. SCP-4000-1 screams whenever he can, which has no anomalous effects, but is widely regarded among site staff as being highly annoying. It was after this incident that the current containment protocols for SCP-4000-1 were implemented.

There are rare times when SCP-4000-1 has a moment of lucidity. At these times, he speaks calmly, clearly, and with apparent intent. Guards have insisted that he even sounded determined or quizzical at times. No instance of his speech in this state has yet been recorded, and efforts to translate second-hand accounts of his language has proven impossible. Dr. Richter has requested site manager Dr. Demir to install recording devices on the inside of SCP-4000-1's cell and have someone listen through to find moments of coherent speech, though she refused, saying that she "wouldn't wish that on her worst enemy."

It is believed by Dr. Richter that SCP-4000-1 is suffering from severe psychosis and suicidal tendencies due to his twelve-thousand-year imprisonment within the facility. Dr. Richter also believes that SCP-4000-1’s screams are in a dead, ancient dialect. Linguists brought on staff have had not been able to decipher it, if it is a language, and many claim that it is simply gibberish. Dr. Richter has begun attempting to rehabilitate SCP-4000-1 and to teach him English, though results have yet to be seen from his initiative.

There is nothing anomalous about SCP-4000-1’s biology, with the exception of safe but unusual levels of gamma radiation originating from SCP-4000-1’s lower intestine. Researchers are currently focused on attempting to explain where exactly it is that SCP-4000-1 drew materials to facilitate cell function for twelve thousand years from without any source of food or water. An experiment was proposed that would cut off one of SCP-4000-1’s legs and disconnect him from his sedatives to observe if and how the leg would grow back. This experiment was denied by both Dr. Richter and Dr. Demir, for “being too psychologically damaging” and “being too loud” respectively.

Notes:

  • Little is known of how in particular SCP-4000 was built, who it was built by, the ultimate purpose of the facility, what was contained within, or why it was abandoned. The lack of written records makes it so that only guesses can be made.
  • Unlike the other cells, SCP-4000-1’s had no sign of a rope lock on it. This has led to the theory that perhaps his was in fact an office, and that he was one of the original builders or facility members. Many of our staff researchers and historians hope he was the director of the facility.
