The Glasses of War

Item #: SCP-5038

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5038 is to be kept in a secure locked room within Site-17, floor #[REDACTED]. The SCP in question will be propped up on a podium in the center of the empty room. The only people with clearance to enter will be the testers and, should the SCP need to be stabilized, armed soldiers. Data collected from the SCP will be stored on a secure and private server and will also be written down in a physical folder to be stored deep within the facility.

Description: SCP-5038 is a pair of eyeglasses with a faint brown tint on the glass. The lenses are a large circular shape, and the frames are black. When put on, the glasses seem to shrink or enlarge to fit the head of whoever is wearing them. When the glasses are put on, the subject will "see" an event through the glasses. How the glasses are able to portray such events to the wearer is unknown.

Discovery: SCP-5038 was discovered in New Brunswick, Canada, when a man was admitted into an insane asylum. His reason for being admitted in was for "Hallucinations of gruesome events that seem to take place in the midst of a battle". The man was reported to scream constantly in his cell, until one day he was silent. When doctors went to check on him, he was dead. The doctors labeled the cause of death as cardiac arrest, but if this is the truth or not is unknown. The glasses since were removed from the individual and given to a female doctor by the name of Chloe Wilson. When she put them on she fell on her knees yelling about gunfire. When it was discovered the glasses were the cause of her hallucination a level 4 agent was transported to the site to collect the glasses and return them to Site-17.

Testing: When our subjects wore SCP-5038, they all reported seeing a violent scene of battle in one way or another. Around 3 to 4 hours later, each subject collapsed, dead. Here is a short transcript of when a subject recounted what they saw in the glasses before death.

[START]
SCP Official: "What exactly did you see when your wore the glasses?"
Subject: "At first, I saw nothing but a wall of dirt. Above me was a man, he was wearing a helmet that looked like it was from the army or something. He was holding a gun in his hands and shooting at something I couldn't see. There was yelling, and sounds of guns, all around me. I was in a trench of sorts. I was a soldier in the war, but I was still in the chamber in the building. It was really bizarre. Without even moving, my "second body" got up and climbed out of the trench. Then I was running across a barren landscape, barbed wire all around me. After that, I heard a gunshot really close by. I felt a lot of pain in my chest. When I took off the glasses, there was no gunshot wound, no blood, but I still felt as if I was dying.

Effects: After taking off SCP-5038, the subjects would be breathing heavily, and were diagnosed with PTSD similiar to what soldiers had when returning from battle.

Other Properties: On several different occasions SCP-5038 was reported to be "shaking" on its podium stand. Entries show that the glasses would shake for random amounts of time before stopping and sitting still. The reasons for why it does this is unknown, but scientists have noticed that SCP-5038 would only start shaking at random intervals after it not being used for a large amount of time.
