Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX-1 is stored on a solid-state drive. It is kept in an anti-static container and stored in a standard containment locker on Site-15. A copy of SCP-4244 must be used for the purpose of testing and subjected to data destruction afterward. No participants may enter or exit the testing area until they are thoroughly searched for removable storage devices.
Description:
SCP-XXXX refers to an anomalous entity and the anomalous effect that it exhibits, designated SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2.
SCP-XXXX-1 is a read-only text file titled “INI_D.txt”. Creating a copy of it can be done without difficulties but any attempts to delete or modify it will return an error.
It's unusual properties manifest whenever an individual opens it using any operating system with GUI capabilities. It will open as a blank text file but characters will soon begin to fill it autonomously until a high-quality work of fiction is produced. The type of fiction produced is based on the reading preferences of the individual opening the file. Any individuals reading this work of fiction will show great interest in it even if they had displayed no previous interest in the genre.
It is important to note that any work of fiction generated by SCP-XXXX-1 will be incomplete, ending in a cliffhanger. Any attempts by an individual to write a continuation to it can result in the manifestation of SCP-XXXX-2.
SCP-XXXX-2 is an anomalous effect that occurs only when an individual other than the author reads a continuation created by SCP-XXXX-1. The death of the author and the administration of amnestics are only two known methods of stopping the effects of SCP-XXXX-2.
There is a three-stage progression to the effects of SCP-XXXX-2 with the following symptoms:
- Stage 1: Immediately after reading, the subject will display signs of dissatisfaction towards this direction the author is taking the series. They will become increasingly critical of the work, identifying flaws that may or may not exist.
- Stage 2: Within an hour, the subject will exhibit increasingly hostile behavior towards the author. This can range from disparaging comments to threats of violence.*
- Stage 3: Anywhere from three to six hours, the subject begins to develop uncontrollable homicidal urges towards the author. Affected subjects are also granted the ability to discern the location of the author.
Recovery Log: SCP-XXXX-1 was recovered from a laptop located in the study of the late █████ ██, an award-winning fantasy author.
SCP-XXXX first came to our attention after a series of murders that occurred in London, UK. The only common link between the victims was that they were all authors attempting to write a continuation to the ██████████ series of novels after it was left unfinished by the untimely death of its author. An investigation was then launched by Foundation assets embedded in local law enforcement into the author of the ██████████ series, which resulted in the discovery of SCP-XXX-1.
It is now speculated that the ██████████ series was originally a work of SCP-XXXX-1 divided into separate volumes. All publishing houses will be under surveillance to intercept any attempts to continue the series.
Addendum 1A: *The following is a log of several experiments in which works of SCP-XXXX-1 are given to individuals with varying backgrounds.
Addendum 1B: *The following is a log of several experiments in which works of SCP-XXXX-1 are given to individuals with varying backgrounds.
Addendum 2A: Incident Log XXXX-1
Following the spree killings at the ███████ held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, it has been discovered that fanfiction based on the works from SCP-XXXX-1 can result in the manifestation of SCP-XXXX-2.
Any fanfiction identified to be based on the ██████████ series of novels is to be intercepted and removed from the internet using a false pretext.
Addendum 2B: In light of Incident XXXX-2, all experiments involving SCP-XXXX has been temporarily halted due to pending revisions to the containment procedures. See Incident Report XXXX-2 for more details.
