Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is kept in a small sized research area situated with incinerators around the room. In the event that SCP-XXXX is read by personnel without proper clearance, said person is to be interrogated on what they have read, and if required, given the appropriate amnestics deemed necessary for the situation. Testing on SCP-XXXX with D-Class personnel is restricted for security concerns, and to ensure the legitimacy of the findings inside of SCP-XXXX. In the event that during a breach SCP-XXXX has an attempt on it to be stolen, incinerators in the room will be turned on, burning everything in the room, including SCP-XXXX.
Research teams for SCP-XXXX are separated into three different groups, and operate on eight hour intervals every day. These groups consist of the Terra Definition Research Team, the Local Celestial Definition Research Team, and the UAS (Unidentified Alien Species) System Definition Research Team. Each team consists of three members, two designated to reading both pages in SCP-XXXX, and one to transcribe important findings into documents for ease of access. Testing outside of reading the contents of SCP-XXXX must be accepted by Lead Researcher Fraymore before gaining approval. Study of the contents of SCP-XXXX are still ongoing.
Description: SCP-XXXX holds the appearance of a standard 1933 Shorter Oxford Dictionary, and remains fully intact and lacking any signs of aging; despite this, changes can be made to the pages and cover, though no reason to change the cover exists to date. The feature that makes SCP-XXXX immediately unique compared to other dictionaries, is that it does not put the words inside in alphabetical order; for this reason, SCP-XXXX’s anomalous properties are difficult to discern at first. SCP-XXXX does not appear to have an end, and attempting to reach an end does not appear to be possible.
Tests involving tilting SCP-XXXX in such a way that the pages would quickly give way have shown to put the pages falling in an indefinite loop, continuing on for a recorded maximum of 75 days, 14 hours, and 46 minutes. Attempts to reach the final page by opening SCP-XXXX from the back have proven insufficient. Instead of revealing the back cover interior, it instead causes the pages to enter a free-fall, just as is caused by SCP-XXXX being tilted on its side in the above mentioned experiment. Attempts to stop this reaction are successful, but pages can not be lifted in such a way to reveal the final page or the back cover interior. Instead, SCP-XXXX will proceed based on how many pages had already been turned.
For SCP-XXXX’s infinite page limit, it boasts an unprecedented amount of knowledge on seemingly everything. All definitions within SCP-XXXX are written in English appropriate to that written within a standard 1933 Shorter Oxford Dictionary, but not all the words being defined are written in English. Seemingly at random, definitions will appear for things that are not known to science, which has led to startling and ground breaking discoveries. Thankfully, SCP-XXXXs pages stay the same at all times, but due to the sheer size of SCP-XXXX, and the lack of words in alphabetical order, specific knowledge is hard to extract, especially since the knowledge within is limited to a definition, and nothing else.
Attempts to mark SCP-XXXX's page with sticky notes have proven insufficient. When non-living matter is placed inside SCP-XXXX to mark the pages from the outside, the object placed is cut. The smoothness of the cut varies on the size of the object and its strength. This effect does not apply if the object stops the corners of the top and bottom pages from touching, and instead successfully holds open SCP-XXXX. Note, that all objects place inside SCP-XXXX stay there until within 40 pages of where the object was placed, in which an indent can be seen if the object is big enough, such as a rock.
Despite not being alphabetical in nature, SCP-XXXX is not completely disorganized. At the 1 billion page mark, the page number is reset back to one, followed by the letter A. This cycle continues down the alphabet until it reaches Z, where it will continue onto another language's lettering system. SCP-XXXX will start listing letters from no known languages at a certain point after it has exhausted all known human languages. Definitions in SCP-XXXX seem to be sorted by language, species pertaining to celestial objects within the solar system of said sapient species, and then it is assumed to describe objects special to that solar system. SCP-XXXX appears to name anything not given a name by any species a completely made up name written with English characters and does not appear to have a pattern of any sort when naming said creatures/objects.
Definitions within SCP-XXXX that go outside the realm of human knowledge begins to increase with intensity the further that one reads into it. At a certain point, SCP-XXXX begins to list off definitions assumed to be closer related to other planets. With this knowledge, it appears alien life of some form exists on [DATA EXPUNGED], though, no other sentient life appears to exist in our solar system. that SCP-XXXX appears to describe what planet each creature it lists off exists on, and for this reason, at a certain point SCP-XXXX begins to relay the information present on another planet of an unknown location with a name that takes the form of symbols not matching any known language. Attempts to read through everything on this solar system are still ongoing, and personnel closely following the research into SCP-XXXX should see the appropriate document given to them listing these discoveries.
Despite SCP-XXXX’s definitions expanding upon many things in our solar system, it does not appear to identify anomalies as a part of our solar system, nor does it count things present in other solar systems in this list either. However, SCP-XXXX does still include all definitions of each individual word in all languages associated with the species existing on our planet, and with the discovery of the other alien species listed above, it seems to do the same with them as well. Regretfully, this means that discoveries at an atomic level, and of other materials and alloys, will be limited to what the dictionary and neighboring civilizations know about, and what the dictionary randomly decides to include.
Definitions of random things seem to appear in SCP-XXXX, and it is assumed that these definitions include only random definitions if no other species has discovered said thing. Evidence for this stems mostly from the discovery of the definition of the "Higgs Boson," written instead of "Judxcarati." This is not grounds to assume no other civilization has found such a particle before 1933, but may instead imply that other aliens use our lettering system or similar letters to our own.
It appears that SCP-XXXX has an extensive list of all SCPs, but has spread them out in random pages, making it nearly impossible to pinpoint ones not previously discovered. It is interesting to note that SCP-XXXX seems limited to definitions already present in 1933, meaning that a great many SCPs past a certain point likely are not listed by their designated number, and if the SCP was previously named something before the SCP Foundation gave the anomaly it’s definition, the SCP would likely be listed numerous times with each individual name given to it. Why SCP-XXXX treats their names as words is unknown, but the current theory is that SCP-XXXX simply tries to define every unique item it can, and takes the nearest thing to a name it can find.
Certain definitions have been manually redacted within the dictionary itself, and have been placed in a seperate file complete with said redacted entries. The most notable redactions included the definitions of SCP-███, SCP-████, and SCP-████-█. No further entries on SCPs have been discovered to date. SCP-XXXX, on record, has contained 46 cognitohazards and 12 memetic hazards; some of these have been due to the text used in the entry, and others for the definition alone.
Note from Lead Researcher Fraymore: A complete archive of all definitions pertaining to our solar system in SCP-XXXX is not currently possible, despite many years of study. Two groups of researchers are dedicated to studying information within specific areas of the book, and will continue to document their findings until further notice.
