Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: In order to identify possible occurrences of SCP-XXXX, the Foundation has required local hospitals and clinics to report any recurrence of night terrors and/or sleep paralysis in children ages thirteen to eighteen years. If the patient is identified to have suffered an occurrence of SCP-XXXX, psychological counseling is to be provided to help reduce the severity of SCP-XXXX symptoms. Due to the recurrent nature of SCP-XXXX events, Foundation personnel are to continue monitoring affected children for a minimum of 3 months even after cessation of symptoms.
Description: SCP-XXXX is an anomalous delta wave that has a 0.0001% chance of manifesting when a child from the ages of thirteeen to eighteen years of age begins to enter REM sleep. The true frequency of SCP-XXXX events is presumed higher, due to frequent misdiagnosis as night terrors or sleep paralysis. SCP-XXXX events most commonly occur from between 12-3 AM. No recorded occurrences have been documented during the daytime.
SCP-XXXX waves can be distinguished from non-anomalous delta waves due to their significantly lower amplitude (see Figure XXXX-1.) During an SCP-XXXX event, the affected child (hereafter designated SCP-XXXX-1) becomes completely unresponsive to all stimuli and cannot be woken. SCP-XXXX-1 instances appear severely distressed. during the event. Rapid eye movement does not occur. Despite this, other biological functions remain intact. SCP-XXXX-1 will wake between 8-10 AM the next morning. Upon waking, SCP-XXXX-1 instances all unanimously report a newfound belief that a malevolent entity resides underneath their bed. This phenomenon proves a significantly greater psychological threat than that of normal night terrors. In some cases, SCP-XXXX-1 instances have been reported to engage in self-harm or suicide from psychological trauma. When questioned after an SCP-XXXX event, SCP-XXXX-1 report their sleep the previous night to be of poor quality, and also report waking up in the middle of the night before falling back asleep.
The experience of one SCP-XXXX event drastically increases the chance of recurrence in SCP-XXXX-1. In some documented cases, SCP-XXXX has been documented to manifest in nearly 50% of all nights.

The Gas Station
A few days ago, I had a dream.
I was driving through the city at night, the unnatural glare of fluorescent lights juxtaposed against the blackness of the sky. The stars were shining bright, far brighter than they should in such an urban environment.
I'm listening to a song I don't remember. I glance at the fuel gauge and realize that I'm almost out of gas. All of a sudden I look to my right and there's a station right there. I pull into the gas station.
Except it wasn't a gas station.
What used to be gas pumps were now metal hatches painted orange. Looking at them, I inexplicably knew that the holes that lied underneath them would never end. Pulling over next to one of the hatches, I turn off the engine and get out of the car. The cool night air is sharp as a razor over the bristles of hair on my skin. I look up at the sky, and I realize that the stars in the night sky are gone.
At that point, I wake up. I get out of bed and I feel my body crumbling with fatigue, threatening to give up. I try to get into the shower. I find I can't take another step forward.
I tell my mom I can't go to school that day.

Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: Travel in and out of SCP-XXXX is strictly forbidden. All civilian traffic is to be diverted from SCP-XXXX and rerouted. A perimeter has been constructed around the boundary of SCP-XXXX based on the geographic designation of La Jolla, California, United States.
Due to the large population of SCP-XXXX and its reputation as a popular tourist destination, extensive disinformation procedures must be enacted in order to maintain secrecy and containment. All correspondence, electronic and physical, going in and out of SCP-XXXX must be intercepted and destroyed. Information of SCP-XXXX found on the Internet must be filtered out and eradicated. The sudden disappearance of all residents of SCP-XXXX from workplaces, family gatherings, etc. is to be addressed with standard disinformation procedures and distribution of amnestics.
Area-XXXX has been set up in the nearby neighborhood of Miramar to conduct exploration of SCP-XXXX and to interview SCP-XXXX-A instances. Area-XXXX is to maintain secrecy under the guise of army operations in the area. Personnel must wear Level A hazardous material suits equipped with a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) before entering SCP-XXXX. Additionally, all personnel must be equipped with SCRAMBLE visor units in order to neutralize all cognitohazardous threats present in SCP-XXXX. After returning, personnel must undergo decontamination for all biological hazards that may have been encountered inside SCP-XXXX.
SCP-XXXX-A instances appear to be unwilling to leave the boundaries of SCP-XXXX; therefore, the threat of breaching containment is slim. Absolutely no attempts of rescue are to be conducted. Termination of SCP-XXXX-A instances is authorized if they become hostile.
The caves underneath La Jolla Cove are to be filled in with concrete as soon as possible following the events of Exploration III. The entities that reside within must not be disturbed.
Description: SCP-XXXX is the seaside community of La Jolla, located within San Diego, California, United States. SCP-XXXX contains numerous biological, cognitive, sensory, and topographical anomalies following the Bird Rock Incident (see Addendum XXXX-1.) Examples of documented anomalous phenomena include:
- The presence of anomalous unicellular and multicellular organisms unique to the area.
- Extensive growth of organic matter over a large portion of its topography.
- Feelings of aversion and dread upon approaching SCP-XXXX in persons.
- Recurrent nightmares in persons after entering SCP-XXXX. Nightmares are reported to contain a recurring motif of doors.
- Cognitohazardous imagery manifesting on signs, billboards, etc.
- Unexplained physical manifestations.
- Unexplained visual manifestations.
- Unexplained auditory manifestations.
The last three phenomena are collectively designated as XXXX-Θ events, which appear at random intervals in certain locations in SCP-XXXX. XXXX-Θ events vary radically in content with no discernible pattern in occurrences. In several documented cases, XXXX-Θ events will manifest as incorporeal depictions of interactions between multiple individuals. The identity of these individuals is unknown. Refer to Addendum XXXX-1 for an incomplete list of XXXX-Θ events.
Residents of SCP-XXXX are designated SCP-XXXX-A instances. They exhibit significant physiological abnormalities as a result of exposure to SCP-XXXX but otherwise appear healthy. Instances of SCP-XXXX-A are cooperative and non-confrontational towards Foundation staff (see Interview Logs XXXX-1-XXXX-3.)

A Poem
One fine day in the middle of the night,
Two dead men got up to fight.
Back to back they faced each other,
Drew their swords and shot each other. One was blind and the other couldn't see,
So they chose a dummy for a referee.
A blind man went to see fair play,
A dumb man went to shout, "Ignorance is in the blissful claws of the foolish deprived of the shorn prosopagnosia of the alive. Your world is a shadowy isolate in the supernatant of broken dreams."And then I put a bullet in my fucking head and everything was alright.

Document XXXX-3: Exploration III*
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedues: SCP-XXXX is to
Description: SCP-XXXX is a poorly understood infohazardous complex. Individuals that achieve full understanding of SCP-XXXX (hereafter designated SCP-XXXX-1 instances) expire after an incubation period of 72 hours. Causes of death vary and often appear natural or accidental in nature.
SCP-XXXX-1 instances become fully cognizant of their fate upon comprehending SCP-XXXX. Upon this realization, SCP-XXXX-1 instances have been noted to:
- Contact loved ones, such as close friends and family, and inform them of their feelings for them or leave them their possessions
- Reach out to individuals who they perceive to have harmed in some way as a means of penance
- Pursue goals that they have considered unachievable during their lifetime, such as travel, romance, etc.
- Engage in criminal activity up to and including rape and murder
It is unknown whether SCP-XXXX is the direct cause of expiration of the subject, or if SCP-XXXX merely grants awareness of the subject's impending death.
It is hypothesized that a singular physical element or aspect of SCP-XXXX is responsible for its effects and resides in an area of spacetime currently inaccessible to the Foundation.
Addendum XXXX-1: In order to document the psychological condition of SCP-XXXX-1 instances, several Foundation Class E personnel were asked to record their current emotion, plans, etc. Recovered testimony is documented below.
SCP-XXXX-1-4 was Katherine Shields, Level 3 Junior Researcher. SCP-XXXX-1-9 was happily married. Notably, SCP-XXXX-1-4 was estranged from her mother.
How do I feel?
Fine, I guess. Same as yesterday.
I can feel it getting nearer. Like something creeping up behind me. It's weird; now that it's so close and real, I don't feel much. It's just like a sense of resignation, of acceptance, really. The time's come, and I'm perfectly fine with it.
I'm going to tell Sophie I love her. Tell her about the day I met her, how her eyes met mine in that old diner off the 66. We've been going through kind of a rough patch recently, to be honest. And… I just want her last memories of me to be good ones.
I think I'm going to go see my mom. I can get to Fresno by tonight if I catch the soonest flight. God, it's going to be awkward. I haven't talked to her since the whole thing with Dad, and I just can't leave things like they were last time we met.
One last thing. I don't know if I'll have another chance to say this, so I'll come clean and say it now.
It's been a pleasure working with you all.
I'll see you on the other side.
12 hours later, SCP-XXXX-1-4 expired from injuries sustained in a car accident in Fresno, California.
SCP-XXXX-1-6 was D-83102. D-83102 was convicted of the rape and murder of 14-year-old Danielle King in 2002, which resulted in his enlistment as D-class personnel.
Not gonna lie, doc, but I've kinda got a lot on my mind right now.
I've been thinking a lot about that girl. I saw her when I was asleep last night. She was standing above me, wearing that striped top she loved, and there was this bright light behind her. She was smiling.
All of a sudden, she reached out at me, and said: "I understand."
I think Allah is trying to tell me something. That dream… it's got me thinking. I think I know what I'm going to do.
I want to go see her parents. I don't know what I'm going to say. And what I do know is that they must hate me, and I know they never want to see my face again. But I have to do this. Allah has decided that my time in the material world is over, but I can't leave before repenting for what I have done.
I understand if you do not grant me this wish. I know your whole thing about secrecy. I have accepted what Allah has in store for me either way.
SCP-XXXX-1-6's request was rejected. 26 hours later, SCP-XXXX-1-6 expired during a containment breach in Site-25.
SCP-XXXX-1-10 was Agent Justin Philips. SCP-XXXX-1-10 was noted to not possess any close familial ties.
It's not fair.
On 2/15/2013, 12:53 PM CST, 2 hours after the testimonial, Site-25 personnel reported sounds of gunfire originating from Wing 31A. Security teams found the bodies of Agents Jake Harmon, Eric Gonzalez, and Megan Yu, all of whom suffered several close-range gunshot wounds. The body of SCP-XXXX-1-10 was discovered shortly after in a storage closet. Forensics revealed that the cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the upper mouth, extending into the brain. In the immediate vicinity of the body, a Foundation-issued firearm was discovered. Gun rifling matched the fatal bullets of all four victims.
No indications of mental illnesse or violent tendencies were reported in SCP-XXXX-1-10 prior to this incident.
Addendum XXXX-2: Incident Log XXXX-15A
Following prolonged observation of SCP-XXXX, researchers proposed an experiment to determine the effects of preventing an instance of SCP-XXXX-1 from expiration via total isolation from all possible fatal agents and the use of SCP-006.
CORRUPTED, formerly CORRUPTED, was chosen for this experiment. Within 2 hours of the 72-hour mark of infection, CORRUPTED was exposed to SCP-006 before being placed in an isolation cell and monitored continuously. Experimenters reported no notable phenomena up to the 72-hour mark. Upon reaching the 72-hour mark, the form of CORRUPTED began to "flicker" and, after 9 seconds, dematerialized. During this period, the following audio was recorded inside the cell:
UNKNOWN: Fuck.
UNKNOWN: I'm starting over.
Following this event, the identity of CORRUPTED assumed apparent antimemetic properties. All information of CORRUPTED has been expunged from all informational banks, including sapient memory. All attempts to recollect data regarding CORRUPTED have failed.
Investigation into the origin of the voice observed during this event is underway.

Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid (Presumed Neutralized)
Special Containment Procedures: The current status of SCP-XXXX is unknown. Data banks from Site-85 are to be continuously monitored for further activity of SCP-XXXX.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a Foundation-created gestalt of artificial intelligences currently operating in the abandoned Site-85. The existence of SCP-XXXX was unknown to the Foundation until the discovery of Site-85's abandonment on 3/12/2019.
From recovered data, SCP-XXXX appears to have originated from Magnolia.aic, a prototype Artificially Intelligent Conscript (AIC) set for activation in Site-85 on █/██/2018. Magnolia.aic spontaneously activated through unknown means on 1/1/2018, 31 days after Site-85's abandonment, and is assumed to have gained autonomy from the Foundation soon after. The means of which Magnolia.aic gained such autonomy is unknown. Following this event, Magnolia.aic somehow assumed control of most electronic operations of Site-85.

Special Containment Procedures: In order to prevent new occurrences of SCP-XXXX, the Foundation has collaborated with the ruling government of the People's Republic of China to disseminate memetic propaganda that dissuade Chinese citizens from conceiving children from late June to early July.
All verified births on the date April 4 are to be reported by the Chinese government. Following confirmation of SCP-XXXX occurrences, affected persons are to be taken in by the Foundation for research and treatment of SCP-XXXX-induced injuries.
Following Exploration XXXX-1, Xizhimen station of the Beijing Subway is to be closed down indefinitely. MTF Lambda-41 personnel are currently at large and must be tracked down and captured as soon as possible. There were no survivors of Exploration XXXX-1.
Description: SCP-XXXX is an anomaly affecting approximately 53% of ethnic Chinese persons currently residing in the mainland People's Republic of China born on April 4 of any year. Persons exhibit severe mutilation that biologically should render them incapacitated or even deceased; however, they continue to persist via presently unknown means. Affected persons appear indifferent to their disfigurations, and when questioned, are unable to give coherent explanations as to how they obtained them.
Injuries can spontaneously manifest at any point in life. The earliest documented manifestation is in a twenty-second-old newborn, and the latest in an eighty-nine-year-old person.
Reports of SCP-XXXX have been recorded since the Western Han dynasty (202 BCE to 8 CE.) It is presumed that stories of attacks from yaoguai (妖怪) are in fact documented occurrences of SCP-XXXX.
Addendum XXXX-1: Analysis of SCP-XXXX Injuries
Analysis of SCP-XXXX injuries by Foundation cryptologists has revealed that the three-dimensional spatial orientation of anomalous injuries in subjects is correlated with a cipher that reveals the following coordinates: 39°56'25"N 116°21'20" E. This was found to be the location of Xicheng district in Beijing, China, in the vicinity of Beijing North Railway Station. The significance of this is unknown.
Addendum XXXX-2: Summary of Exploration XXXX-1
At 2:31 AM on 9/2/2019, MTF Lambda-41 arrived at the coordinates given by SCP-XXXX in Xicheng district, Beijing, China. Shortly after, an entity consistent with all known biometric data of Hu Yaobang1 approached the agents and spoke the phrase in Mandarin Chinese: "它在下面2." The entity then left the area and was thereafter unable to be located.
Following confirmation of an anomalous event in progress, Lambda-41 agents cleared all civilian traffic in a two-block radius. Ground-penetrating radar revealed the presence of forty-four humanoid entities present on the Line 4 platform of nearby Xizhimen subway station. MTF Lambda-41 proceeded toward Exit B, the entrance deemed closest to the Line 4 platform. Upon arrival, the entrance to the station was discovered to be completely sealed by an unknown translucent solid resembling amber, except red in coloration. The substance was determined to be extremely resistant to all known methods of breaching. Devising an alternate plan, MTF Lambda-41 proceeded towards Exit A1, which is located closest to the above-ground Line 13 platform.
Upon reaching Exit A1 and confirming the absence of the blockage found in Exit B, Lambda-41 breached the locked gate and entered Xizhimen station. Lambda-41 turned on helmet-mounted flashlights and proceeded towards the transfer corridor to Line 4. Upon entering the transfer corridor, Lambda-41 descended underground. At this point, agents reported hearing a voice speaking Mandarin Chinese. Voice was determined to match that of a sixteen-year-old Chinese girl. The source of the voice could not be determined.

Lambda-41 proceeded to the bifurcation separating the Line 2 and Line 4 transfer corridors, proceeding down the latter hallway. Upon arriving at the Line 4 concourse, live video feed from all agents cut out. Lambda-41 reported hearing the same disembodied entity speaking.

Lambda-41 agents proceeded past ticketing gates. Sound of a subway train stopping at the platform underneath can be heard. They descended the stairway, at which point all live video feed is lost, degrading into static. Agents report their mounted cameras are still functional. Agents reported descending to the platform, moving towards the western end. The disembodied entity is heard again, and persists for the next minute Lambda-41 approaches the western end of the platform.

Forty-four minutes after loss of communications, MTF Lambda-41 emerged from Xizhimen station via Exit A1. During debriefing, they were unable to recall the nature of the entities residing on the Line 4 platform.
Following debriefing, it was determined that there were no survivors of Exploration XXXX-1. Further attempts to locate the entities formerly known as MTF Lambda-41 were met with no success.

Special Containment Procedures: The remains of SCP-XXXX-A are to be kept in a standard humanoid anomaly disposal container until further notice.
SCP-XXXX-B is to be kept in a standard humanoid anomaly
Description: SCP-XXXX designates two separate entities who match all known biometrics of Level 3 Foundation Researcher Philip R. Murdock. It is impossible to discern which entity, if either, is the original Philip R. Murdock.
As of the writing of this document, SCP-XXXX-A is deceased. -A was discovered on 12/28/2019 at Dr. Murdock’s personal residence, found buried underneath a patch of recently dug soil in the backyard. At the time, Dr. Murdock had been reported absent from Foundation duties for three days. Autopsy results have indicated that -A had died on 12/25/2019, for at least three days.
SCP-XXXX-B was discovered on 12/28/2019, wandering Foundation Site-66 in a dazed state. Given the recent discovery of -A, -B was promptly treated as anomalous and taken into containment, which -B did not appear to protest.
From testimony given by SCP-XXXX-B, SCP-XXXX-A is the original Philip R. Murdock, and -B originates from an adjacent timeline that seemingly experienced an XK-class end-of-the-world scenario, as detailed in SCP-XXXX-Ω. However, these claims are impossible to validate. Therefore, both are to be treated as anomalous until further notice.

Item #: SCP-018-EX
Object Class: Explained
Special Containment Procedures:
Description:
Positron emission tomography (PET) scan of a Caucasian male, 35 years of age, in the advanced stages of SCP-XXXX infection.
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: Local medical reports of SCP-XXXX symptoms, specifically uncharacteristically fast-progressing dementia, are to be monitored with available manpower. Affected subjects are to be released into Foundation care to undergo psychological restructuring therapy. Current therapy techniques report an average of 56% recovery within five years.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a neurodegenerative disease. SCP-XXXX causes progressive and severe dementia, personality changes, and loss of fine motor skills, over a span of three to four weeks.
The course of SCP-XXXX infection follows a four-stage progression, as outlined below:
Stage I: Marked by depressed, confused moods. Micrography of central nervous system tissue reveals myelinal degradation akin to Wallerian degeneration. This stage lasts for 3-4 days.
Stage II: Axonal lesioning occurs. Impaired transport inhibits the release of acetylcholine, causing worsening loss of motor control and memory. Deterioration in Broca's area causes the development of aphasia. This stage lasts for 5-6 days.
Stage III: Continued degradation results in the complete severing of the axon. Subjects exhibit extreme difficulty in motor control and are often confined to the bed or wheelchairs, resorting to crawling and eventually writhing motions of the limbs in efforts to move. Loss of memory eventually results in a form of prosopagnosia. Aphasia has worsened to the point that the infected can only communicate in telegraphic speech. This stage lasts for 6-8 days.
Stage IV: Wallerian-like degeneration stops. Oligodendrocytes facilitate the regeneration of the axon; however, the damage caused by SCP-XXXX results in the complete dissolution of long-term potentiation in neuronal synapses. Spinal cord synapses remain unaffected by SCP-XXXX, preserving involuntary pathways observed in infants, including the Babinski and Moro reflexes. This stage lasts until the end of one's life, as the physiological and psychological changes caused by SCP-XXXX are permanent.
It is of note that despite the complete dissolution of long-term potentiation in post-Stage IV subjects, they still possess certain emotional reactions to specific stimuli.
Several factors have been implicated that may contribute to the development of SCP-XXXX infection. These include:
- A history of depressive disorders.
- Social isolation.
- Recent emotional trauma.
- Substance abuse.
- Repeated thoughts/feelings of nostalgia.
Most notably, information gathered from diary entries, testimony from friends and family, etc. reveal recurring use and emphasis on a group of phrases repeated verbatim among all subjects. Examples of these phrases include:
- "Start over."
- "Fix my mistakes."
- "The good old days."
- "Another chance."
- "Born again."
In writing, these phrases are always underlined or bolded. In conversation, they are always spoken with uncharacteristic emphasis.
Investigation into possible cognitohazardous vectors in these phrases is underway.

Special Containment Procedures: Due to the nature of SCP-XXXX, it is considered self-containing. However, further investigations into SCP-XXXX and any danger it may pose are considered an utmost priority.
Individuals possessing significant recall of SCP-XXXX are kept at Provisional Area XXXX-σ in standard humanoid containment cells. They are to be administered a regimen of Class X mnestic drugs, coupled with exposure to memetic trigger images found in the Jung journals.
Description: SCP-XXXX is an event occurring within a human's first year of age.
What exactly occurs during SCP-XXXX is an antimeme; it is impossible to recall any details of the event under normal conditions. According to Freudian psychology6, innate defense mechanisms cause the complete repression of SCP-XXXX, rendering it inaccessible to the conscious mind. The only extant memories of SCP-XXXX in existence are found in subjects undergoing heavy Class X mnestic regimens; however, they are grossly incomplete. While SCP-XXXX cannot be consciously recalled, its very occurrence is theorized to be a driving factor in behavioral development throughout life. In certain individuals, SCP-XXXX causes latent manifestations of certain aspects of it later in life. (refer to Addendum XXXX-1).
Knowledge of SCP-XXXX can be dated back to the early 20th century in the journals of Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung. Following what he referred to as a "confrontation with the unconscious" in 1913, Jung began to experience visual and auditory hallucinations. Viewing their occurrence as a source of investigation, Jung began to actively induce hallucinations, recording
Jung's findings were later published7 in 2009 by his grandson, Ulrich Hoerni. However, no references to SCP-XXXX are present in the publication.
The number of individuals who have experienced SCP-XXXX is unknown.
Addendum XXXX-1: Jung Files
The following excerpts were recovered from Jung's notes from 1913 to 1929. Notably, they are not present in the published version.
Last night I entered the Mysterium once again.
For a brief moment in time I felt as if my self had slipped into the depths. I had no idea of up or down or light or dark; I only knew the sheer, heavy presence of the primordial underworld around me. In the dark recesses of my consciousness I was struck with a great awareness that crept across my cortex until I was wholly borne with the weight of it. I would later consider this a revelation: I had unearthed a fraction of my mind repressed for many years buried under layers of the human condition.
It was with this realization that I ascended; the nether faded and I found myself atop the same tower I had came across a fortnight ago. The green garment on my body and the horn hung on my shoulder are exactly the same as the last time I came to this otherworldly place. Me, the solitary guard of the castle.
The red horseman was still here.
He was approaching the castle once more, weaving in and out of forests and fields. As he did I became aware of a sense of responsibility—that maybe it was my duty to prevent his entrance—but I paid no mind to it. As I dwelled on this the red one was already making his way up the tower, and I braced myself as I responded to his knocks on the door.
The Red One: "We meet once more, man on the high tower. I was beginning to wonder when would you call for me once more."
I: "In all honesty I am unaware I have ever done so."
T. R.: "Yet, my friend, you did."
(A distant smile creeps onto The Red One's face.)
T. R.: "I was meaning to reach out as well. My friend, we are no longer strangers. We are now well acquainted with each other. And as your new acquaintance, I feel it is my duty to share with you my burden."
I: "Elaborate, please."
The Red One approached me, his eyes as fiery as his red hair.
T. R.: "I want you to keep this."
He snatched my right hand with his left, using his free one to slip a small object into my palm. In alarm I withdrew my hand, feeling the foreign thing now in my grasp. My grip molded itself in the shape of it, small and oval-like, its exterior smooth in an odd way.
T. R.: "Go on. Gaze upon it."
I unfurled my fingers around the curious object and moved my gaze down to meet it. The object, it turned out, had the appearance of a five-pointed star. What aroused my attention was its coloration: such a vivid shade of red I did not believe existed in nature.
I: "What, exactly, is this mystifying thing?"
T. R.: "I cannot tell you its function at this present moment, but I will tell you that when the time comes, you will know exactly what it is."
I: "I do not appreciate this enigma."
T. R.: "Is human life not an enigma? Your kind ambles through it, blind and helpless, never knowing what the mist of the future obscures. With every page you turn in the book of your history, the next writes itself outside of your control no matter your efforts in the previous canon. You are nothing more than ignorant children, cursed to forever seek meaning where there is none."
I: "I would argue this tragedy contributes to the fleeting beauty of human life. Perhaps we need not understand the intricacies of the world—we merely need to formulate meaning in our own self. And this abstract property is not universal among all people, no. That is the meaning of free will. Humanity has the freedom to interpret the maddening chaos around it, to shape it into something concrete and real."
T. R.: "You raise a good point. Your tongue is a sharp one—adept at the rhetoric of a true intellectual. I have come to harbor a profound appreciation for men like you: a mind, so pure and distilled in its power. The capacity for critical thinking beyond the level of laymen is a gift. Do not waste it."
I: "I take your compliment with great gratitude. In fact, I could say the same for you. Yet I do not believe you are truly a man, are you not?"
(The Red One grins.)
T. R.: "No, indeed I am not. I recall our previous encounter, in which you believed I was the devil. I concede my crimson garments may project that particular façade."
I: "Yes, and then you told me you were joy."
T. R.: "I have since come to the conclusion that joy is not an adequate term to christen me. No, it will simply not do. I am something greater than joy, something above simple emotion. I encompass your kind, totally and utterly."
I: "What are you, then? What are you?"
T. R.: "God, brother. I am God."
Since my last excursion to the Mysterium I have been wrought with several anxieties.
The most severe, of course, is the significance of The Red One. His recurrent presence signifies a powerful undercurrent guiding my lifeline, and I feel myself helpless to stop it. It is possible the process of individuation has encountered an anomaly, some aspect in my consciousness or unconsciousness creating the identity of The Red One in my dreams.
Most peculiarly, I am stricken with an awareness of a sort of power in me. I feel as if I am a spring now coiled, full of potential energy. When I ponder this I always find my brain drifting to the thought of that curious red egg The Red One gave me that bizarre night.
I fear disclosing these experiences to others for I fear they find me mad; however, I am beginning to consider myself justly so. Instead I have kept these psychoses to myself. I have ruminated on them, mulled them around in my mind, and in the process I have formulated several postulates.
Firstly: The archetype of The Red One is a manifestation of the shadow8
Secondly: This archetype is part of the collective unconscious9 and universal among at least a great percentage of the human population.
Thirdly: This archetype originated from a deeply repressed childhood event. I suspect my confrontations with The Red One are not in real-time. He had properly entered my unconscious in childhood, and I am only just now beginning to become aware of his continued presence. Regardless of the nature of what possible event might have occurred, I believe it has become integral to my shadow.
Today my second postulate has been validated.
In the afternoon, when the sun's light was dimming, I conversed with a longtime patient of mine whose name I will not reveal. Instead I will refer to her as P. P, a vivacious young woman around the age of twenty, has been suffering from anxieties since childhood. Quite often I find her anxieties manifest themselves in her dreams as archetypes.
It was during this afternoon that she disclosed a seemingly minute detail of her most recent dream that caught my attention. I will recount to the best of my ability the conversation between us two:
