SCP-5712

Item #: SCP-5712

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5712 is to be kept in a locked steel safe two meters in width, length and height with a single top-down camera and lightbulb installed. No unauthorized personnel below Level 3 is permitted to look at SCP-5712 without at least two Level 3 or higher personnel present. At all times one Level 3 or higher staff member of the group responsible for the containment of SCP-5712 must be able to view a live feed of SCP-5712. In addition must there be a direct contact to the Foundation's translation staff. The person responsible must record all writings which SCP-5712 produces in the SCP-5712-Log.

Description: SCP-5712 is a red, hardback book with black, vertical stripes on both its front- and backside. It remains in an opened state, precesily flipped to its exact middle, and appears to be unbendable.[1] Upon its two pages, both 28cm tall and 18cm wide, are written text which changes in reference to the person reading it.[2]

Both subjects and personnel have often reported the text to be in their native language (n=127, [REDACTED] positive answers) with its content ranging wildly from seemingly inarticulate nonsense to intricate, highly verbose "prophecies"[3] the common demoninator being a date in the upper-right corner of the right page. All recorded predictions have been observed to occur (see SCP-5712-Log) without fail on the written day, Annus Mundus/ε.Κ..

The actual content, however, seems to be the same despite the language differences.
Further investigation has revealed rare occurences of vast differences across readers, though the majority of predictions have been closely related across language. Research into possible sapience of SCP-5712 is currently awaiting approval.

The text changes at seemingly random moments, the shortest observed time being twenty-one minutes and the longest six weeks, two days, one hour and seven minutes.

Excerpt of the report on the research and testing of Dr. Ammon, current leader of Department A7-█, ██-3-19

Throughout the last [DATA EXPUNGED] months I, Dr. Ammon, together with Dr. D████,
Dr. O███, Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics Prof. T█████ as well as various translators,
have conducted various experiments into the mechanics of SCP-5127,
specifically into the content and nature of its texts.

Report #4 regarding SCP #5127

In abstract: the text of SCP-5127 appears to be almost totally dependent on
the person reading it, with most having what I have termed an "Alpha" response -
id est: they perceive the text as whatever "Alpha" message SCP-5127 either
intentionally (see report #3 regarding possible self-consciousness)
or via routine. However, a few select individuals (n=██) had instead
a "Beta" response and read a totally different message than the Alpha-subjects.
The Beta messages were mostly Aramaic (ca. ██, Christian Era), Arabic of mixed dating -
mostly 1st to 7th century - and a few glyphs of indescirnable nature.

I recommend that these Beta subjects be kept in observation and be made
readily available to view SCP-5712 any time it changes text.
In addition do I recommend that a journal of SCP-5712's texts
be kept and updated as well and thoroughly, in as many languages
as possible, without delay.

Finally, it is of paramount import that we devise a way to avoid SCP-5712's
prophetic nature. Reports from Beta subjects include pages regarding
extreme natural disasters, extraterrestrial [REDACTED], multiple paragraphs
on the "Apocalypse" or "Reveleation" (note here the definite article, and
cf. "Ἀποκάλυψις"), some of which dated as early as [DATA EXPUNGED].

We're not sure if SCP-5712 is responsible for the already-observed
events occuring, or if it's merely a tool for seeing what'd happen anyway.
As such, destruction of SCP-5712 is not currently advised.

Further research regarding SCP-5712's supernatural characteristics are currently undergoing.
