The Symbiotic Tunnel

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid Safe

Special Containment Procedures: The entrance to SCP-XXXX is to be continuously monitored via remote camera for the duration of D-CLASS TEST. Personnel assigned to SCP-XXXX are to operate from an off-site facility located in ██████ ███ to avoid drawing attention to the tunnel system. If civilians are observed investigating SCP-XXXX, security personnel should be sent to disperse anyone present and administer amnestics. In the event that any test subject currently involved in D-CLASS TEST emerges from SCP-XXXX, they are to be detained in the off-site facility. After administering a thorough examination to the recovered test subject, Research personnel must determine if it is necessary to continue or terminate D-CLASS TEST.

Following the conclusion of D-CLASS TEST, the entrance to SCP-XXXX has been sealed with concrete. Motion-activated cameras observing the entrance to SCP-XXXX are to remain active as a precaution, and any captured footage is to be uploaded to servers at Site-11 and may be occasionally examined to ensure the concrete seal has not been tampered with. It is no longer necessary to maintain a facility nearby and exclusively dedicated to SCP-XXXX.

Description: SCP-XXXX Is a network underground tunnels located ██ Kilometers to the East of ███████ Lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The entrance to SCP-XXXX can be accessed via a roadside ditch near the intersection of ██████████ Road and ████. The tunnels that make up SCP-XXXX are circular, measure 2.5 Meters in diameter, and are made of concrete. SCP-XXXX resembles a typical storm drain, but it does not connect to the surface at any location except its entrance. The tunnel system contains multiple junctions and branches, and continuously descends deeper underground as its passages lead farther away from the entrance.

The source of SCP-XXXX's anomalous effect can be found at its deepest point: a flooded dead-end at a depth of about 75 Meters below the surface. When SCP-XXXX is inhabited, corpses of rats, mice, and other small rodents will regularly surface in the flooded area as a means of sustaining the tunnels' residents. Upon consuming the morsels provided by SCP-XXXX, inhabitants become subject to its anomalous effect, and are drawn into a symbiotic relationship with the tunnels. Individuals under the influence of SCP-XXXX demonstrate a fanatical desire to protect the tunnel system from intruders, and will regularly perform acts of self-mutilation for the benefit of SCP-XXXX in exchange for its continued supply of food. Residents of SCP-XXXX quickly become dependent on it, and will adamantly refuse to cease their relationship with it.

Prior to Foundation involvement in 2003, SCP-XXXX had been inhabited for over three years by a group of six locals. Following the emergence of Subject XXXX/A from the tunnel entrance on ██/7/2003, A mission to recover the remaining individuals within SCP-XXXX was attempted by MTF SQUAD, which resulted in the termination of all residents (See addendum- MTF recovery log). Subject XXXX/A is currently in foundation custody, and has proved useful in documenting the anomalous effect of SCP-XXXX (See addendum- survivor interview).
