Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in Testing Room 6 at Site 113 on a standard, wooden, artist’s easel. Testing Room 6 is sealed with an electronically activated door, access to which is restricted to personnel with level two security clearance and higher. Research Staff assigned to SCP-XXXX must include three or more personnel identifying as both asexual and aromantic. Under no circumstance are site personnel other than those identifying as asexual and aromantic to view SCP-XXXX directly. All testing is to be monitored through security cameras from a secure room that does not allow a direct line of contact with SCP-XXXX.
Description:SCP-XXXX is a 90cm x 60cm oil portrait of an unidentified man and woman in an embrace. The back of SCP-XXXX is inscribed with the following:
“L'Amour Fait Mal, 1899,█████████. Chère Madeline, que ma douleur soit la tienne”
SCP-XXXX’s anomalous effects are demonstrated only when an individual makes direct visual contact with it and are not present when viewed through video or photography. The couple depicted in SCP-XXXX, known as SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2, change depending on the person making direct visual contact, with SCP-XXXX-1 taking the appearance of an individual for whom the subject has romantic feelings and SCP-XXXX-2 taking the appearance of an individual the subject trusts implicitly, usually a close friend or family member. The process of transformation takes anywhere between 10 seconds and 3 minutes depending on the strength of the subject’s feelings.
Upon completion of transformation, SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 will begin to engage in sexual intercourse for between 7 minutes and 2 hours. During this period, subjects will be unable to stop looking at SCP-XXXX. Exposure to SCP-XXXX’s anomalous affects will immediately result in extreme psychological distress with subjects’ expressing a strong desire to kill or seriously harm the individuals depicted in SCP-XXXX. Psychiatric evaluations carried out after exposure indicate that those exposed to SCP-XXXX believe that the actions it depicts have occurred in reality. After exposure, subjects will begin to suffer from severe depression; refusing food and attempting to severely injure themselves. While Foundation security procedure successfully limits the rate of suicide, all surviving individuals affected by SCP-XXXX have died within 3 weeks of initial exposure due to severe heart failure. The exact cause of this heart failure is not yet known.
SCP-XXXX was recovered from the private art collection of Lady Patricia Caddell on 03/02/1935 after its anomalous effects were discovered by local police investigating the murder/suicide of Lady Patricia and her husband, Lord Francis Caddell. Further investigations by the Foundation revealed Lady Patricia acquired SCP-XXXX in a bulk purchase from an auction house. All attempts to locate the original owner, the auction house, or the creator of SCP-XXXX have failed.

Test Log 1
D-11349, a 32-year-old man with a long-term partner, was introduced to SCP-XXXX’s on 30/03/1935. Testing was carried out by ███████.
███████: Please describe what you see
D-11349: It’s a painting, I can’t really make it out, it’s a bit blurry. I don’t know, sort of looks like two people going at it. Wait, its moving, shit how is it doing that?
███████: Moving? The painting?
D-11349: The people, their faces are changing. Wait, wait a minute. That’s…How the fuck is it doing that?
███████: Please describe what you see
D-11349: It’s Emily, that’s my Emily. How does it know what she looks like?
███████: Please describe the rest of the painting
D-11349: The…The guy he’s, he’s changing too. What the fuck is this? What the fuck. That’s my old man! My… what are they doing, stop that! What the fuck is this!?
███████: Please describe what you are seeing
D-11349: They’re fucking!
D-11349’s is reduced to heavy sobbing, ignoring research staff’s instructions for the next 26 minutes
███████: D-11349, what is happening?
D-11349: (Sobbing is replaced by anger) I want to see her. I want to fucking see her, how the fuck could she do this to me. I’ll fucking kill the pair of them!
███████: D-11349, please calm yourself
D-11349: Let me out of here, I have to see them. How could they, how could they (Sobbing resumes)
D-11349 was given a full psychiatric evaluation and continued to swing radically between violent intent and extreme depression. Over the next 72 hours, D-11349 engaged in self-harming, repeatedly banging his head against walls, clawing at his wrists and refused to eat. D-11349 eventually died 8 days after initial exposure due to severe heart failure.
Test Logs 2 – 9
From 4/4/1935 – 24/4/1935, Research Personnel tested SCP-XXXX’s effect on multiple observers by introducing increasing numbers of subjects. At its height, SCP-XXXX was exposed to 53 individuals at one time, all of whom reported SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 taking forms relevant to them. It was concluded that SCP-XXXX has no upper limit and its anomalous effects would apply regardless of the number of direct observers.
Test Log 10
On 5/5/1935 D-43827 was exposed to SCP-XXXX for a period of 2 seconds whereupon two asexual and aromantic personnel placed a cloth bag over D-43827’s head to restrict vision and removed the subject from the room. D-43827 continued to experience SCP-XXXX’s anomalous affects and claimed to be able to see SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 for a period of 31 minutes, despite direct visual contact being interrupted.
Test Log 11
D-93387, an individual identifying as asexual and aromantic, was introduced to test SCP-XXXX’s reaction to a viewer with no romantic or sexual impulse. Test occurred on 12/01/1999.
███████: What do you see?
D-93387: It’s a painting, there’s a couple of blurry lookin’ people. It’s sort of swirling a bit, what is it, a video?
███████: What are the images doing?
D-93387: Nothing, just swirling around a lot. Wait, the top one, looks a lot like my Uncle. What is this?
███████: What is the other figure doing?
D-93387: I don’t know. Sorta looks like it’s changing into different people, difficult to tell to be honest.
SCP-XXXX-1 continues to change into a number of blurred individuals, D-93387 claims to be unable to identify any of them. After approximately 13 minutes, SCP-XXXX pauses for a moment and then reverts to its original appearance. D-93387 is given a full psychiatric evaluation but displays no distress or abnormal behaviour aside from mild confusion.
