Special Containment Procedures

SCP-XXXX is currently located off of Kuru Kara, Philippines, with foundation patrols guarding the area.
The population of Kuru Kara has been informed that SCP-XXXX is an endangered wildlife preserve.

Description

SCP-XXXX is a blue hole located near Kuru Kara's city of undetermined depth, with a currently undetermined depth, with the farthest depth estimated to about 16,000 meters. Any attempts to venture below 16,000 meters have proven unsuccessful.
During the close presence of SCP-XXXX, subjects report symptoms of Schizophrenia, Psychosis, Neurosis, Amnestic Disorder, and/or Hypersomnia. Said symptoms become more extreme during farther depths.

SCP-XXXX was discovered when mental illnesses spiked in the area.

Several “layers” of SCP-XXXX have been documented.

1024px-Logo_of_the_SCP_Foundation.png

0-300 meters: The plant and animal life remain relatively similar with no preditors. This region has no major abnormalities.

300-700 meters: This region has large acidic mushroom trees that amplify pain receptors upon touching either the surface of the plants or the spores released from the plant. Many of the ecosystem's predators live within this region. Many of the plants and animals that live in this region have an orange pigment to them.

700-800 meters: This region contains large Hydrothermal Vents shaped like trees. Large bioluminescent jellyfish stretch up to 6.5 meters in height. If any symptoms of mental disorders caused by SCP-XXXX become severe at this depth, causing many refuse to go deeper.

800-1200 meters: This region contains many floating islands widely apart with bioluminescent fauna and flora. Many anomalous predators live in this region, such as a hammerhead shark passing through solid matter. Many cannot continue descending in this region due to the severity and possibly deadly symptoms of any mental disorders caused by SCP-XXXX.

1200-1600 meters: Recording equipment gets damaged in the area, or photos get blurred, but this area seems to have more bioluminescent fauna and flora.
1600-???: It is unknown whether life is supported in these depths.

Update 1/13/2021: A message in a bottle has been discovered above SCP-XXXX during a patrol.

Addendum.XXXX.1: Bottled Message

7/18/1029

They say many people lose their minds when they venture deep into the great blue hole, but I say I have lost my mind before I've set foot into the waters of the blue hole. Many are frightened by the great depth of the blue hole, but I view it as space for me to fill it in with my curiosity, the emptiness calling out to me as I look down at the water from the boat.

I have been equipped with an atmospheric diving suit with months, if not years, of forging. If anyone were to see me in it, they wouldn't doubt I'm centuries ahead of them in technology. But even with this suit that is near indistinguishable from future technology, I know there is a slim chance of me coming back up from the great blue, which is why I'm writing this in case I'm unfortunate enough not to make it back. How I'm writing this? You don't need to worry.

The others on the boat are complaining of mild headaches while I mixed rum and dead bark to nullify the effects from the great blue. They will not last forever, but it's better than dealing with hands you can't see grasping you.

I finish strapping on my diving weights and put my helmet on. I have enough food and oxygen to last me months if it is necessary. Maybe the fish would enjoy my company.

I look back at the boat, with the rest of the crew looking at me with anticipation.

I put my hands in front of my face doing a salute and breaking the first diving rule. I jump back first into the water. One of them shouts something, but it's too late for me to hear anything.

I look down and stare into the intimidating eyes of the great blue. Its swirling life its iris, and the void of it is its pupil. It sees right through me as I only see so far with my small eyes compared to it.

My weights pull me down at a frightening pace, but to the massive depths of the great blue, I move akin to a slug. I pass by the angelic groups of fish, and I am awestruck by their contrasting colors. I try to hold these memories in my head while I sink. It'll be a matter of hours before I go to the second layer.

Tall corals reflect the sunlight rays giving them a brightening color. The short seagrass is tucked into many narrow caverns. Fish start dancing around me with a melodic sense. Their vivid colors diverse them apart more than what species they are. There is more vibrant life here than any ocean explorer could wish to see in their entire lifetime!

It has been around two hours, and I am near 200 meters, and I continue descending strong. I look below me and see the spores being released from the acidic mushrooms all the way from up here. Normally they would only reach the very bottom of the first layer. Although normally I would never get a headache near these depths, I can feel a tingling sensation near the back of my head.

After more and more of sinking, I, at last, reach the second layer, The Acidic Mushrooms. It is not a unique name and may have people thinking they could find psychedelics inside the ocean's depths. Instead, you discover mushroom-shaped plants that will give your skin an unpleasant itch that feels much more than just a mild inconvenience. Although my diving suit should provide the necessary protection for these harmful spores, I will still be cautious not to get near any.

Light still penetrates this far down, but definitely not as much. But the light still gives the area a lively and majestic appearance. There is still fish that swim near me, but the more passive life seems to be staler. And more predators seem to roam this layer, although they don't look like any species I've ever seen before, and the same can be said about the fish in the first layer.

I continue my descent as the water gets darker and I get more tired. The bioluminescent plants turn on as if someone had just lit a thousand lanterns at once. It leaves me speechless as I gaze up and down the walls of the layer covered in every inch with the blue light.

My eyes start to fall tired as I drift off while descending. I might pass by another layer if I sleep for too long, but I'm sure I'll be okay.

I wake up with a jolt to the sound of someone crying for help, their voice slightly distorted. I swim quickly to the location of the sound, sacrificing a diving weight.

But when I reach the area of the sound, I see tall and bipedal creatures screaming. The creature looks like a mix of a land and water creature with large fins in replacement of arms. However, I don't see how useful that could be underwater.

The creature screeches at me and starts to swim quickly toward me. Unfortunately for the creature, I have prepared for encounters like these. I take out my spear on my back and hurdle it towards the creature, aiming for its head. I miss the creature the first through, but when I pull the spear back to me with my rope, it hits the creature, knocking it off balance, giving me a second chance to strike. I throw my spear and directly hit its head. It didn't get killed, but it was certainly enough to get the creature to retreat.

Unfortunately, I now sink slower due to me throwing away weights. I still watch as the scenery begins to shift into the next layer.

The Heat Trees, as many people call them. Large hydrothermal vents spew out a hot mist that I feel the warmth of from meters away. I look down and spot enormous bioluminescent jellyfish. They lay slowly moving, only slightly drifting up and down. Although not the smartest idea, I decided to jump on top of the massive jellyfish. It acts like a large bouncy surface. I get distracted, and I don't pay attention to any of my surroundings, and soon I am surrounded by massive jellyfish.

There aren't that much, but their stingers are more likely to touch you if they are even bigger. I try to sink slowly, even throwing away a weight, but you can never be too safe. While sinking, I look back up and see the stingers of the jellyfish. A smile grows on my face as it reminded me of before birth when I was raveled.

I look behind me and see I giant stinger in front of me. I don't move away in time, and it touches me. I brace for a shock that never comes. Instead, I start feeling dizzy and sleepy.

The last thing I see before I doze off is the blue eye. It blinks and opens, speaking silent words without a mouth.

It tells me to go deeper…

I wake up on an island in the ocean, with the blue eye tugging me awake.

Life in this region is very sparse. Just glowing orbs and plants floating. How deep can I go as an orb?

I waste no time and jump off, continuing to sink. I pass by islands with wide voids in between them. I like how the islands don't fit anymore.

I look below and see nothing, just the pupil of the eye calling to me.

Deeper…

I wake up even though I do not recall sleeping. The symptoms of the deep blue have taken effect on me. But I am still determined to continue descending.

There is nothing I can do to prevent it. I just hope I'm okay next time I wake up.

My mind is still tired despite the fact I most likely slept for a couple of hours. I want or need to sleep, but I am afraid I might not combat the symptoms.

The life here is scarce, with hardly any light to be found. Light stretches miles apart, and they are all very dim.

I look down and see nothing. The blue eye is no longer pure and blue, but it is an eye of suffering from no end. I doubt myself on why I came down here, but I have no other way than down.

The depths carry much longer, and I don't know if my mind can carry on with the effects of the eye.

The life around me is gone, and I'm the cause. I bring destruction wherever I go. I'm the reason why the blue around me has gone black.

It was a mistake to come down here. I only sink because I have no other choice.

I dove down in the hope of answers. I played myself, and tricked myself, and tricked myself, and tricked myself into taking the villain in there to take the throne. I dove down in the villain in the bottom. The great blue was great, and it was a truly insane throne. I dove down in the hope of answers, not even any treasures, just answers, not even anything at the bottom. The great, it was always like a beautiful princess. I am the story. There would be anything at the bottom. The great, it was great blue.
Not even the slightest spec of life. No light, no dust, no sand, only rocks, and darkness. There is absolutely nothing here is absolutely nothing here is absolutely nothing here. No lightest spec of life. No light, no dust, no dust, no sand, only rocks, and darkness. There. No lightest spec of life. Not even the slightest spec of life. Akemi, Akemi, do you see me with your all-powerful eye?

Keoni, Keoni, do you hear me with your undefended ears?

Lyloi, Lyloi, can you smell me with your immovable nose?
Segari, Segari, can you touch me with your all-embracing hands?

Mei, Mei, can you taste me with your engulfing mouth?

I learned of an ocean built of many people in one. They're a people. They are all one.** we** are all one.

I sink down, in the art of the ocean's eye. A place where there is god, the shadow of a god, where he created man who created art. The large number of colors hurt my eyes to see. I don't have the capabilities to look at another larger eye.

The sun reaches down here, which I don't even question. It's better if I don't have the answer.

My brain feels like it isn't contained in my body. It is like it has wandered off to a different place. I should appreciate the beauty of their eyes and the abundance of life, but I only feel numbness, not a single nerve is reached.

I stand on a giant coral leaf as I watch fish spin in circles around the hole. It's lifeless down there. I look back up, is it really worth it?

I close my eyes before I make a final answer, and jump down into the abyss.

As I descend, I look at my arm in my suit.

"Am I still human?" I ask out loud.

My mind feels freer from the curses of the deep blue, but it feels like those parts of my head with the effects have been removed, rather than cured.

I don't remember my name, or why I'm coming down here, I only remember the vast depths of this place.

One thing I do remember is that I was always alone. Nobody else was ever with me.
I look to the floor of the sea and see a human, a vaguely looking woman. She looks as decayed as a statue, and as I touch the seafloor, she shakes.

Her voice is shaky, but no bubbles come out of her mouth, nor does her voice sound bubbly. She struggles to speak, making vague sounds, like she is in pain, but not physical pain, mental pain.

"Why was I put here?" she manages to barely cry out.
Her body begins shaking, and large amounts of rock and dust covering her starts to rumble off, revealing her body. She is far from human now.

She has the tail of a large shrimp, with her arm like a giant crab's. Her eyes are dripping out a dark black liquid. She's horrifying to look at.

Her movement becomes erratic. "There are no more emotions, no more emotions, as my heart has spewed out a grievous evening." Her body shakes with every word. "Please tell me, darling, darling, darling, if our never ending wounds will not heal, what can we do?"

"I-" I try to say, before I am interrupted by her.

"I was never ment to be in their body, I was the creator of their body. I am the reason why I am trapped for eternity down here. It's me, I created my own cage. And I'll never know why. I know your not real, what's the point of speaking." She begins to scream in frustration.

"But I am real." I try to explain.

She begins sobbing. "Every moving thing I see here is a lie. There is not life, nothing can life in this abyss. I am their death, and I'll never know why.
"I've come from the surface."

She looks up at me, "You're not the first to come down here."

"Really?" I say in disbelief.

"But nobody has made it back the same. Have you seen the unnatural creatures roaming the sea? They were just like you, they were human, it's not descending that's the worst part, it's the ascension. This entire place is a trap for it's living, like a Venus fly trap"
"It's?"

"Have you never noticed, you've been calling this place an eye, like it's the ocean's body."

"Am I stuck down here?"

"Yes. Have you seen the Cryers? They scream from their last human memories, they scream because they have the sense of still being human. Almost every fish and every shark, and even the plants, they were human." She finishes rambling and puts her head down, as if weeping.

"No other way but up-"

"No other way at all." She interrupts me. "Any way you can, warn everyone to not come down here."

I pull out the bottle and stick the paper in quickly to not get it that wet. I take a deep breath as I let go of the bottle and watch it float up.

"This will take centuries… if I'm lucky"

“Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not.
Both are equally terrifying.”

SCP-XXX

SCP-XXXX was a strong broadband radio signal received by SCP Foundation Extraterrestrial Life Research facility on October 8, 1961, by the ARMENIA-1634 radio telescope. The signal itself contains a photograph with irregular shapes of various shades of blue, white, and tan, including one structure that resembles a tree. The picture is mildly distorted.

The entire signal sequence lasted for 31 seconds during which ARMENIA-1634 was able to decode it, but the signal has not been detected since, despite several attempts. Many hypotheses have been made on the origin of the signal, including natural and human-made sources, but none of them adequately explain the signal. The discovery of SCP-XXXX started project Malihini for extraterrestrial life research.

Project Lunaria Den

Project Lunaria den is a GOC radio telescope project being planned to be built in Far North Russia with an estimation of 2,000 kilometers in size. It will operate over a wide range of frequencies and its size will make it around 20 times more sensitive than any other radio instrument.

However, it will require very high levels of maintenance along with massive amounts of power. If built as planned, it should be able to survey the sky more than 5 thousand times faster than before.

Radio signal detection

Some of the most powerful signals to leak into space are military radar emissions, which stand a much better chance of detection across interstellar distances
then the average radio broadcast.

But if any civilizations have detected such radio signals, none of them have seemed to make direct contact with humanity. However, the new Lunaria Den could be able to detect radio signals of advanced civilizations up to several hundreds of lightyears away.

To detect more distant signals would require more deliberate attempts at communication.
For instance, advanced civilizations may construct powerful beacons specifically for increasing radio luminosity, but similar to the Lunaria Den, these would be rather expensive to maintain as they would use vast amounts of energy in extended periods of time.

A less expensive mode of communication is focused beams of radiation to specific locations. These signals are only detectable for however long they are transmitted, leaving a short window for detection.

Signatures of life beyond earth

Several signs of inhabitable planets have been discovered throughout the years, but biosignatures don't seem to be present on all of them. Some planets have no sign of life whatsoever, while others show evidence of complex biospheres that can support intelligent life. But habitability doesn't always been habitation.

The existence of habitable worlds has not yet been proven, but there is enough circumstantial evidence to suggest that some forms of life exist outside our solar system. If life beyond earth exists at all, it probably evolved similar to life on earth, starting from organic compounds. The simplest form of life such as simple bacteria is almost certainly out there in some distant region of space.
But theoretically, life can exist in silicon base forms and even more complex forms.
The search for life beyond earth has been one of the primary focuses of the SPOJ research, with several missions planned to various planets.
