Item: SCP-XXXX

Object class: Safe

Special containment procedure: SCP-XXXX is to be contained within a room, with walls floor and ceiling lined with lead, measuring 2m x 2m x 2m. Entry must be authorized by someone with level 2 clearance. No other containment procedures required.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a sphere structure 30cm in diameter possibly of Incan decent. We discovered this artifact contained within a stone sarcophagus inside the central chamber of an ancient Incan temple located at [DATA EXPUNGED]. After opening the sarcophagus, the sphere floated up to chest height and remained there with no visible support.

The surface of the sphere is unusually smooth despite appearing to be made from a black stone like that of Jet. Upon closer inspection, there are strange sigils and inscribings on the surface which are not of Incan origin. However, after translating the scriptures carved into the walls, we learned this artifact was once used in several rituals including but not limited to [DATA EXPUNGED]. How the sphere was used in these rituals is currently unknown to us.

Also, in conditions similar to that of the Incan temple, the sphere will glow with a dim white light temporarily before several faded lines appear on the surface. After this occurs, the artifacts shape changes, with no interference, often for several minutes at a time. When the spheres morphing stage has ended, someone can then begin to solve the puzzle created by sliding and shifting the pieces back into the original positions in a trance like state that cannot be overcome with the exceptions of outside assistance e.g. separating the solver and the sphere or presumably with the sphere being solved.

On all occasions where the solver has been taken away from the artifact, it has re-shifted itself into the original scrambled state. All attempts at solving the sphere without outside assistance or interference has ended with the solver being unable to complete the task. If the solver is unable to return the sphere to its original form, bandages emerge from the separations in the puzzles pieces and constrict around the subjects body mummifying them while still alive. During the mummification process, the bandages appear to extract some form of energy from the host. This energy is passed into the sphere causing it to split one or more of its own pieces into several others making the solving process much harder. This extraction of energy has occurred with all attempts at solving the artifact and likely occur with all future attempts. Upon discovery of this unusual property, the sphere originally 13 sections, since then the piece count has increased to 27.

Since its discovery, there have been several attempts at breaking open the sphere to view its contents, however after attempting so, the tools and equipment used turn to dust shortly after making contact with the surface. Using radio waves, X-rays, visible light, ultra violet and infra red imaging to view the contents have proved to be non-viable options, suggesting the sphere repels all forms of radiation, light frequencies and energies.

Attached are the more significant tests we conducted on the sphere to learn of its properties.

Test No.5 - Date: September 6th 2012

Subject: D-XXXX-1
Procedure: Class-D personal provided with enough food and water for 24 hours and was left with the sphere.
Results: Class-D subject found mummified with death estimated around 14 hours after test began.
Analysis: The sphere cannot be solved by a single person, suggesting it must be solved by some sort of program or several people attempting to solve at once.

Test No.8 - Date: November 4th 2012

Subject: G+ PHYSICS solver
Procedure: Recreated the conditions in Incan temple room and attempted to use puzzles solving algorithms to complete the puzzle
Sphere proved to be too advanced for the algorithms, after completing supposed solution the sphere was in the original scrambled state.:
Analysis: Sphere can defy mathematical algorithms preventing solving.

Test No.22 - Date: February 27th 2013

Subject: D-XXXX-19
Procedure: Class-D subject left with the sphere and was told to cut off the bandages if solving resulted in failure.
Results: Class-D specimen found mummified. Injuries include broken bones, internal haemorrhaging and several puncture wounds directed near vital organs.
Analysis: The sphere mummification process will become extremely violent if resistance occurs, suggesting the sphere has some sort of sentience.

Test No.23 - Date: February 28th 2013

Subject: D-XXXX-20
Procedure: Class-D subject left with the sphere and was told to attempt solving of the sphere. Also in the room was a scribe (D-XXXX-21) who recorded the session.
Results: After some time attempting to solve the puzzle, the scribe moved D-XXXX-20 away from the artifact so they could eat. Doing so resulted in the sphere undergoing the mummification process with D-XXXX-21 killing them, and severely injuring D-XXXX-20. Full report attached.

Analysis: The sphere mummification process will become extremely violent if resistance occurs, suggesting the sphere has some sort of sentience.
