The Orchestra

Item #: SCP-5287

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5287 or "The Orchestra" is to be kept in a medium sized room fashioned to look and act like an auditorium with strict soundproofing due to a finding that when outside of an auditorium, SCP-5287 seems to get excessively loud. 10 personnel shall always be present within the room to sustain the dormant state of SCP-5287. Personnel who are tasked with listening to SCP-5287 should be rotated out and replaced with an other person to ensure there is no physiological damage inflicted on personnel. Doors and other entrances need to be closed after use to sustain the soundproof system within the walls.

Description: SCP-5287 is currently contained within Site 91, [DATA EXPUNGED], USA. The Orchestra is a collection of various instruments found in Bordeaux, France; including violins, bass, flutes, etc.. It serenades those within it's vicinity of 150 meters and the sounds they emit seem to be omnipresent. Some people experience different songs within the same time period and is found to react to people's emotions; playing accordingly. SCP-5287's music ranges from calming orchestral arrangements to brain hemorrhaging, violent music. Without an audience of at least 10, it seems to get agitated and use said brain hemorrhaging sounds.

SCP-5287 was also found to get agitated when a subject displays acts of violence towards the instruments or attempts to come in contact with them. In one case a subject attempted to grab one of the flutes, and seconds later he lost his hearing due to a deafening sound, which others have reported not to have heard. In very obscure and rare cases, D-Class personnel and researchers have had euphoric experiences with SCP-5287.

The following was information found within a personal journal belonging to [DATA EXPUNGED]:

These instruments used to be owned by a psychotic maestro back in the 19th century. He was known to be eccentric and often insane. Despite his normal conducting of the band, in his spare time he liked to capture unfortunate poverty stricken victims from around the town, and perform mentally straining experiments on them. These experiments were often about sleep deprivation and loud continuous noises inflicted on the subject. After the maestro was done with them, he would kill the person and dump them into the Garome River near La Grange(north of Bordeaux).

The notebook was found with the instruments in the dilapidated house in Bordeaux. In the back pages, there is a pamphlet referring to an occult in the area. From what we have gathered, the mucus and blood within the instruments was supposed to someway attach the maestro to the instruments(See Addendum 5287.2).

Addendum 5287.1: Observation Log

While undergoing different research and documentation, one of the guards slipped into a nap, which seemed to upset SCP-5287. The result was terrible, the orchestra emitted many loud "hits" and deafening music, specifically Beethoven's 9th. All 10 of the guards inside the auditorium lost their hearing, and the one who fell asleep died due to a combination of a brain hemorrhage and a stroke. In the observation room above the main entrance to the auditorium, the two present researchers, including head researcher Dr. Kline, has experienced severe hearing loss, however it seems that the sound proofing and glass between the two rooms had saved the 2 men from losing the ability to hear.

After the incident, the Orchestra went quiet before slowly getting louder to the tune of "Flight Of The Bumblebee". 10 more guards were quickly whisked into the room while coroners removed the dead body. Due to this, we have added in an extra guard in an attempt to create a safer environment for those inside and to ensure another accident never happens again.

Addendum 5287.2: Observation Log

Further testing on the instruments have revealed that within them, there are traces of blood and mucus which has dried up over time. Attempts to collect a good amount of it for further research has been halted, for a researcher had accidentally touched one of the violins, which inflicted a brain bleed.

Addendum 5287.3: Observation Log

For a test, Dr. Kline brought 10 Class-D personnel into the auditorium and had all guards leave them to their devices. After an hour, subjects reported hearing the same song repeat over and over, asking to be let out. The tests went on for the whole day, with subjects yelling that the same continuous music was getting louder and louder with each repetition. Soon after, the 10 guards reentered the auditorium and the subjects were taken out after experiencing mild psychosis.

Addendum 5287.4: Findings

Interviewed: Derick Johnson, D-Class Personnel
Interviewer: Dr. Kline, Site-91

Foreword: This interview took place after a drawn out test on the effects of the SCP on people.

<BEGIN LOG>

Dr. Kline: Okay, so Mr. Johnson, you have spent a total of 21 hours within the auditorium, with my understanding, you have expressed your concern with your life, why is that?

Johnson: Well, um… Half way into this experiment, the same song kept going on and on, getting so loud I couldn't hear myself pace around. From somewhere, I could hear a voice; it referred to itself as the conductor… It told me that I had some bad karma and said I would be punished for it.

Dr. Kline: [writes down findings in a binder] Interesting… this is the first time someone has reported a voice within the auditorium. Can you tell me the events that happened after this 'Conductor' spoke to you?

Johnson: I didn't hear it again after that, the music began to slow down and distort into a mess, and it was changing pitches and volume. I thought I could feel my brain slowly rotting away from the inside out while my ears were being ripped apart… I tried to cover them and I started to scream. I couldn't stand it.

Dr. Kline: Inter-

Johnson: You think this is interesting you sick bastard? I thought I was going to die! Do you really enjoy seeing people suffer? What are you? A sadist?

Dr. Kline: Mr. Johnson, please calm down, I just want to document your experience.

Johnson: R-right…

Dr. Kline: So, approaching the 21st hour, you started to bash yourself against the side of the stage while crying, what exactly made you do this?

Johnson: The sounds felt like they were pushing the organs out of my body, like vibrations were running through me. I wanted it to stop so I… tried to end it.

Dr. Kline: I see. What about when you climbed onto the stage?

Johnson: I tried to kick all the instruments over, and that's when the music got to the loudest point. It barely sounded like music, but more like distorted audio coming from speakers. It was shrill and awful.

Dr. Kline: Okay, that's when the guards came in to grab you, one of them reported you still yelling about hearing it once you were out of the auditorium, is this true?

Johnson: Yes, I continued to hear it for the next 10 minutes. The doctors said that my hearing had deteriorated.

Dr. Kline: Well thank you Mr. Johnson, this guard here will take you back to your cell, have a good night.

Addendum 5287.4: New Information

After running ongoing tests on D-Class personnel, we have concluded that these damaging sounds cannot seem to continue past the room that SCP-5287 are in. However if a subject is exposed to the deafening sounds, the instruments seem to be able to keep playing damaging music for an indeterminate amount of time. Tests have ranged the time period from 10 minutes up to 50 minutes.

Addendum 5287.5: Audio File Captured

Foreword: This audio was recorded by a microphone in approximately the 3rd year of containment. An event like this where actual audio is captured has never occurred previously; but instead transpired in the minds of people. It was acquired after a microphone was pushed against the violin.

Audio has been turned down by a factor of 12 to prevent hearing damage, still remain cautious.
