Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is currently composed of 4 lens, designated SCP-XXXX-A, SCP-XXXX-B, SCP-XXXX-C, and SCP-XXXX-D. SCP-XXXX-A and SCP-XXXX-B are currently being held together by a silver frame and are to be contained in a black, hard shell glasses case. SCP-XXXX-C and SCP-XXXX-D are contained in separate, specially designed lens cases. All lenses are stored in vault G at storage site-██ when not being utilized for testing or other appropriate activities. By themselves, the objects are inert, requiring no further containment procedures.
Description: SCP-XXXX-A-D are round blue-tinted non-prescription lenses.
The anomalous properties of SCP-XXXX manifest when one or more lenses are held within 1.8 inches of the retina of a single person. If multiple lenses are used by the same person, the same properties will manifest in each of those lenses. If more than one person is viewing a single lens from the specified distance, all anomalous activity will cease for that lens. Closing the user’s eyelids does not stop the anomalous activity, however putting an opaque object between the user’s eyes and the lens for 5 to 9 seconds will.
No immediate change is present upon looking through the lens(es). After looking through the lens(es) for 10 to 15 minutes, the user will see what is described as a thin layer of ash on all nearby surfaces. After 20 to 30 minutes, the user will see ash particles floating in the air. After roughly an hour, in 60% of tests in which the user is not surrounded by enclosed spaces, and in 10% of tests in which the user is, a man who calls himself Excale will appear from an area not within sight, usually from around a corner or behind the user. In cases where there are 2 or more people looking through separate lens(es) in the same vicinity, they can both see Excale simultaneously. However, they have to have been looking through the lens(es) for at least 40 minutes.
Excale is a tall man with African origin dressed in a worn leather suite and equip with a silver katana. Users cannot interact with Excale outside of talking with him, and, likewise, he cannot not interact with users or the world. He will attempt to avoid moving objects or persons, but if it is impossible or requires too much effort, the objects or persons will go through him. When there are no open spaces to walk through, he will tend walk through closed doors or windows, even though he has the ability to walk through walls.
When Excale meets the user(s), he will warn him or her to not look through the lens(es) at night or in dark areas and that they should dispose of the lens(es) where no one else will find them. After which, he will attempt to leave. The user may follow him without incident. He will go in a single general direction, with no clear pattern with other tests. Excale will not create or carry out conversation, but will attempt to answer questions if asked. When asked about how the anomalous properties of SCP-XXXX occur or of its origin, he will claim that he doesn’t know the answer or, in some cases, simply ignore the question (see Interview Log).
If the user is in an area with an illuminance of 1 lux or less, the area will appear darker with more ash particles in the air, and the user will have a strong sense of anxiety. If the user stays in this area for 20 to 80 seconds, an entity designated SCP-XXXX-1 will appear to the user within the darkest area between 40 and 200 feet from the user and immediately start walking or running toward the user. If the user is in an enclosed area with walls less than 40 feet from the user, SCP-XXXX-1 will walk through a wall to reach the user. Each entity is described as a pitch black, 12-foot humanoid, having thin, exaggerated and inconsistent bodily proportions, with an elongated face lacking any facial features. If Excale is nearby, he will instruct the user to remove the glasses or lens(es) immediately and will attempt to fend off SCP-XXXX-1. If SCP-XXXX-1 reaches a user, the user will undergo a tonic-clonic seizure, followed by a loss in brain activity, leading to death. If the user moves the lens away from his or her eyes before SCP-XXXX-1 is within 3 seconds of reaching the him or her, he or she will be unharmed. However if it is within a distance that it can reach the user within 3 seconds after he or she removes the lens, the user will still undergo a tonic-clonic seizure, causing death.
SCP-XXXX-A and SCP-XXXX-B were retrieved on 13/11/2008 from the ███████ apartments in ████████, New York. It was found on the deceased body of Jeffry ████, which autopsy reports show he had died due to a seizure that night. Investigation showed that neighbors saw him running down the street in a panic yelling for help, where he then collapsed on the ground and started violently twitching and eventually ceased movement. Following the investigation, SCP agents examined his possessions and contained SCP-XXXX-A and SCP-XXXX-B, which were, at the time, in a pair of damaged grey frames. SCP-XXXX-C and SCP-XXXX-D were retrieved on 20/08/2010 in ██████████, North Carolina, when a similar incident occurred to the victim Angela ██████, who started to seize in the street at night and was hit by a truck. While SCP-XXXX-C and SCP-XXXX-D were intact, the frame was destroyed. Testing shows that the lenses are extremely resilient but not impossible to damage.
Note: SCP-XXXX-D was use in the resilience test and is now cracked. This, however, does not inhibit its anomalous activity from manifesting.
Interview Log-A1:
Interviewer: Dr. Harrison (project leader), Interviewee: Excale. After Dr. Harrison caused the special properties to manifest and Excale to appear, he walked alongside of Excale, asking him questions and repeat his response to the researchers as researchers follow them and document the conversation.
<Begin Log>
Dr. Harrison: What is your name?
Excale: My name is Excale.
Dr. Harrison: Where did you come from?
Excale: I don’t know, one day I was just here, with no memories.
Dr. Harrison: Where did the lenses come from?
Excale: I only know of their existence because people such as yourself can see me.
Dr. Harrison: Are there a lot of people who use the lenses?
Excale: Yes, at least a dozen.
Note: This indicates that there are several other SCP-XXXX lenses.
Dr. Harrison: Where are the other lenses?
Excale: I don’t know the location, just a sense of where it is.
Dr. Harrison: How do you appear seemingly out of nowhere to people like me?
Excale: I have learned to sense the presence of people looking through the lens, so I can come to their location to warn them about the [DATA EXPUNGED]. (Referring to SCP -XXXX-1).
Dr. Harrison: And what is this [DATA EXPUNGED]?
Excale: All I know is that it feeds on some sort of unseen energy made by people, but it can only sense those who look through the lens.
Dr. Harrison: Does it feed off people, or does it get stronger from killing them?
Excale pauses for a moment.
Excale: Hmmm. I suppose it has grown bigger over the years, but I can't be sure. It's been so long since this has all started.
Dr. Harrison: How do you stop it?
Excale: As far as I can tell, nothing from your world can harm it, this sword seems to be the only thing that repels it.
Dr. Harrison: Where did you get this sword.
Excale: When I woke up for the first time I just had it holstered to my belt.
At this point the researchers are approaching a public road and advise Dr. Harrison to end the conversation, as to not risk pedestrians seeing them.
Dr. Harrison stops walking.
Dr. Harrison: Is there anything else you want to tell me before you leave?
Excale: Get rid of the lenses. Put them in a place no one will find them. I don’t need to watch any more people die.
<End Log>
Note: To assist in finding other SCP-XXXX lenses, a notice to search for any activity similar to the deaths during the retrieval of SCP-XXXX-A-D is to be sent out to investigation teams.
Don't Carelessly let the class D's die. We don't know why the heck this thing attacks people or what it does to them. For all we know, the lenses purpose could be keeping this nightmare imprisoned. I don't want to risk the possibility of it getting stronger. Who knows what will happen. -Dr. Harrison
Dr. Harrison requested that SCP-XXXX to promoted to a Euclid class due to its risk of SCP-XXXX-1 becoming more powerful and breaking containment. Request Denied.
