I am All of Me
"Clear the way!"
"Coming through!"
"What the hell happened here?!"
"His spine has suffered immense trauma; initial diagnosis indicated that he was thrown back with immense force."
"If I'm reading this right, he isn't going to live long enough."
That was the last that Daniel Myers heard when he went into a comatose state. He was in a stark white space, devoid of all senses.
There is no feeling.
There is no air.
There is no sound.
Nothing.
By his count, he was inside the white space for over sixteen days. He looked out into the great beyond, looking at the void. The void looked back at him.
He hated that feeling. He hated looking out into that void for so many days, knowing that people were staring at him but only to check his pulses. Check that he won't wake up at all, so they know when to end it.
"…patient?"
He turned to where he thought the voice was, nothing. He looked and saw nothing, just sat there alone in his thoughts.
"…he should be coming out by now."
He opened his eyes to find himself in a hospital ward room. He tried to sit up from the bed only to see he could not move his body at all.
A figure in a crimson cloak appear in the corner of his eye and attempted to see what it was but found once more he couldn't do anything. The form in the corner then turned to face him: it looked like a metal skull was looking at him. His mouth didn't move; its eyes and mouth just had a slight green glow every time he spoke.
"Ah," the entity looked at Daniel with the green eyes staring intently at him. It spoke to him in a deep soothing voice. "It would appear you are fully awake."
Daniel wasn't a man of religion or anything that relates to faith. To have faith would falter facts. In his line of work, facts not faith would do the job just fine. However, there were a few moments that he would have to have faith in his work.
This is one of those times.
"Are you Death?" He asked, scared of the thought that he may be right. Scared that, after years of arguing with men of religion, they might have been right all along.
"What? Oh, you mean my augmentation!" The horrible thing crackled like a lord of the castle has heard a funny joke. "I do apologise. Death and I did meet on occasion but I can assure you that the Reaper hasn't got you yet."
Daniel was confused. If this thing wasn't Death then, who the hell was he and what was he doing in the hospital. More specifically, his hospital room.
The strange form then grabbed his charts from his bed. "Let's see here… Received spinal injuries up and down… The patient may never move their body ever again…" It continued to read out the many problems that he was experiencing. From heart conditions, all the way through to skin problems.
"Yeah, yeah I get it. I'm a medical marvel when it comes survivability. Can you please leave so I can go back to wherever it is I need to be?"
The metal skeleton placed the charts down and looked at him, mouth and eyes glowed as if he were about to say something crucial.
"Coma," he simply said, looking at him with what Daniel could only guess is amusement. "You were in a coma for exactly fifty-two days, four hours and eighteen seconds."
"Wait," his face went into a surprised state of shock. "I was in a coma for fifty-two days?"
"And four hours and eighteen seconds. I swear, you fleshbags use the big numbers because that's all you can see…"
Daniel's mind was racing. What was going on? fifty-two days? His mind was pondering on this. He was scared and confused. If I was stuck inside my body for fifty-two days then -
"Then the doctors were unable to fix you in that time."
He turned to see the red-cloaked monster staring back at him. I stared at the void… and it stares back.
"Sorry but I took the time to study your thought patterns while you were waking up," it moved over to his bedside. "I can do more if I wanted to."
"So, what, you're magic?"
"Well, technically science, not magic. Once again, you fleshbags focus on the big things, not the things that make it what it is."
Daniel wasn't sure of what to believe in now. Surely, I'm -
"Mister Myers, I can tell you, here and now. You are not dreaming of this meeting."
Myers looked at the figure once again. "Oh yeah, prove it."
"I was able to do what doctors couldn't do for another century in a day. I was able to wake you from that sleep."
Shit.
"So I have a deal for you," the figure asked. "Allow me and my team of engineers to remake you. Make you a better you."
"Huh?" Daniel muttered. There's no way someone who looks like they're from a bad sci-fi movie could do something that sounds that crazy. He guessed that, since he had maybe a few days to live, rather than trying to change, he fell deeper into the rabbit hole.
"We can give you prosthetics like for example, your legs. We can make them so you wouldn't be able to tell they weren't yours. Your arms are the same deal. The insides we can replace with a self-sufficient internal working so you can enjoy the taste of food, drink and yes, alcohol."
It sounds too good to be true. Daniel had to ask. He had to know what took the mysterious being so long to get to him to out of the void.
"Why me?" He muttered. The undead looking thing stepped back a bit, almost like he was stunned.
"Tell me, do you remember what happened in the accident that occurred?"
Daniel closed his eyes and remembered -
- He was running in the streets wearing his SWAT armour. He and his team had received a tip-off that a drug deal was about to strike between the Balla Brawlers and the Vargos Cartel. When they heard of this, they mobilised to intercept the deal and take down two major players in the underworld.
When they arrived at the target location, they performed their usual operation of breaching and clearing. The SWAT moved in to find and identify what happened when no one reacted to them. They saw a big statue in the middle of a loading bay with the corpses of the dealers they were supposed to arrest.
That was when Officer Kowalski was struck down.
Officer Cuttner went down next. Didn't see it coming but he helped shout out what it was.
The Statue. That was their murder weapon. The statue was alive and was going after them. The SWAT team opened fire, releasing all they could onto it. It barely made a dent in it. The statue took out Officers Newcastle and Peralta. Soon it was just the statue and Daniel Myers.
He was picked up and thrown around like a baby having a tantrum with a toy it didn't want. He heard a sharp bang from behind him and the statue, having a final hurrah, thrown him across the room and making him feel the pain.
Daniel opened his eyes and looked at the entity that wasn't Death. The being then spoke as if he saw the memories himself.
"I see… Your first time with the anomalous and it attacked you? Interesting…"
What? Daniel thought before he spoke up. "What do you mean by the "Anomalous?" What I saw was something real. Something that killed my men and did this to me. Anomalous means something that can't be explained by science, no?"
At this point, the entity then looked at him with what Daniel could only assume is meant to be amusement. "Exactly. There is a science behind everything that is life. What you encountered was a kind of energy coursing through the statue that made it animated. Although its aggression is unknown to me, my best guess is that someone programmed the energy to make it attack anyone in that warehouse."
"Hang on here," Daniel raised his voice, trying to move but failed. "So if that thing was programmed to attack… where's the programmer?"
"That," the death looking figure raised a finger as if to prove a point in a discussion. Its finger was also metallic like its face. "Is the question and possibly your drive if you take my offer to rebuild you. As far as the world knows, your braindead and will leave you to die in a hole in the ground."
The thing took out its hand and raised it to hold his hand. "But I can offer you so much more. I can remake you and then you would then die if you go after this programmer. That is option B.
"Option C is much more beneficial for both of us. For you, you could have the power to not only fight against the being's power but the power to become a better you."
Daniel then looked up and pondered on it before asking. "That's all well good and all but what do you get out of it?"
"We get to work on a challenge. That is my group's ambition; to find a challenge, tackle it, solve it and find the next challenge. You have a damaged nervous system among other problems presented in your body. My team will learn and be prepared to repair something similar to this situation, if not this exact situation."
Daniel tried to nod and failed once more. "So if I agree to your terms… I can go after this guy?"
"That and so much more. You can perhaps improve others lives IF you agree."
Myers wants to go after his target. Everyone on the force knows that if the thin blue line gets pushed, the line will push back. If he can give that same line a big push, the line will push back and push back hard.
There was no other way Daniel could get out of the hospital and have a chance to push that line forward.
There was only one question left to ask.
"Who are you guys?"
"How rude of me," He then extended his hand out towards Myers' hand and Daniel could only guess it is smiling. "I am Regional Director Michaels of the Technothaumaturges of the São Paulo Branch. I can see that you and I are going to go far in this endeavour."
Michaels then produced a small black cube and chucked it at the wall. The black cube suddenly opened up, Myers could feel hot air coming through the strange portal. Michaels then dragged Myers bed to face the new hole in the wall.
Daniel could smell the scent of oils, welding of metals together. He could hear engines revving up on the other side of the portal. He could also see people in overalls working in areas which appeared to be behind a thick pane of glass.
"Wait," Daniel tried to shake the bed but failed. "Where are you taking me?"
"Why," the Regional Director said as he wheeled the bed towards the hole. "To the future, my dear boy."
