SCP-5999

Containment: Access and Procedures

SCP-5999 is Level 4 and considered extremely dangerous, accessible only to Class C personnel and higher. SCP-5999 is able to be studied at anytime when proper authority is aware and has given clearance to access the SCP.

It must be contained in a wooden ritual case that was found next to it. SCP-5999 is currently contained in its wooden case, locked inside of a stainless steel lockbox only accessible via keycard and with clearance from higher level authority.
The lockbox containing SCP-5999 must also contain:

  1. A "complete copy" of The Necronomicon
  2. A set of ceremonial candles found with SCP-5999
  3. A ceremonial dagger also found on the site

To safely hold and observe SCP-5999, the subject and all personal present in the room must recite a specific ceremony incantation from page 77 of the Necronomicon first. After the incantation is spoken for roughly 2:30, it is safe to handle SCP-5999. The incantation's effects to protect the subject holding SCP-5999 seem to last 7-72 hours. According to the Necronomicon, SCP-5999 is only safe to use by humans once the stars "fall in favor" determined to be any time there is a blood-moon. In order to safely return SCP-5999, place it back inside its wooden box delicately and place its accompanying items around the box first. Lastly read a second incantation found on page 88 of the Necronomicon, and place the book on top of the wooden box. Authorized personal will then be able to lock it in the steel lockbox for later observation.

If the procedures above are not followed, an immediate lockdown must be ordered for the room containing SCP-5999. Once it has been located in the room, personnel must read the same incantation as before to safely go near it and place it back in containment. Once SCP-5999 has been successfully contained, personnel will review security to see what was not properly followed, and those guilty will be dealt with accordingly.

SCP-5999: Description

SCP-5999 is described as a large metal amulet with a long, thick chain. Its surface has an ancient, indecipherable text carved into the metal. Some of these symbols can be found in the Necronomicon. A ring of this writing is carved on the edges, and a strange star known as an "Elder Sign" is carved in the middle with four more symbols around it. The text, when the amulet is in use, will glow a sickening pigment of greenish blue and is currently not on the color pallet that the human eye can comprehend. The amulet's size on average measures roughly 3-4 inches in diameter and is roughly 1cm thick. There is a seam that wraps around the circumference and is rumored to be able to open, but is currently thought to be a welding mark from the amulet's creation. Sometimes personnel using the amulet will notice the metal itself can change color between either bronze, or metallic gray as well as its size. When it is in higher level personnel's hands it will be larger, and in lower personnel's hands it will be smaller showing that it seems in-powered when in powerful hands.

Effects of SCP-5999

If containment procedure is not followed correctly for SCP-5999, these are symptoms of what has occurred to unauthorized personnel…

Subjects or personnel affected by SCP-5999's influence will suffer:

  • Hallucinations
  • Severe insomnia
  • Hearing loud, deep voices
  • Extreme night terrors
  • Eventual insanity, currently incurable unless subject is in a coma or asleep

Subjects and personnel affected have reported strange dreams and images concerning themselves with SCP-5999 of a cosmic deity described as having bat-like wings, and an octopus-like head with burning orange eyes. This description fits many other SCP's in particular SCP-2662. Soon after these reports, the subjects and personnel were deemed clinically insane, as well as some becoming mute.

When containment procedure is properly followed, SCP-5999 has the ability to "protect" or "shield" the user from more problematic SCPs, but only for short bursts of time, roughly 30 seconds.

Below are notes and documentation regarding SCP-5999's origin, and how it came to be contained at the foundation.

SCP-5999: History/Discovery

The artifact is an amulet used in rituals performed by the occult, discovered in the years 1918-1968. It was found on an island off the east coast of the United States, supposedly used in cultic rituals. A police agency on the island were informed of strange happenings in some caves located on the east side of the island. They discovered the remnants of a cult and found the amulet on an alter made of stone. In 1968 it was found in the police station's evidence lockup by the SCP foundation, after recent reports of the staff complaining about the amulet and its powers on the island. SCP-5999's origin is currently unknown. Studies estimate its was created around 5000 B.C.

Failure to follow any of these procedures will result in dire consequences and termination.
