Item #: SCP-5629
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5629 is to be kept in a 1 m x 1 m fireproof container. The container is to be made of a clear fireproof material to ensure its containment in the container without having to open or make direct contact with SCP-5629. The room in which the container is stored must follow standard climate and humidity control procedures. Due to its properties, SCP-5629 must only be handled by Level 2 staff or higher. In no circumstance is anyone allowed to view the contents of SCP-5629 unless following proper testing procedures.
Description: SCP-5629 is a book estimated to be approximately 400 pages in length. It has a leather cover and has no title or information written or printed on the exterior of SCP-5629. The date in which SCP-5629 was created is unknown. Estimates age SCP-5629 to be approximately 250 years of age with its origin being found in an abandoned cottage in Roanoke Virginia. SCP-5629 was recovered in 19██ by Dr. K█████ who was assisted by several members of MTF Theta-34 "Pioneers." SCP-5629 was found in the attic of a residence from [REDACTED] stored in a cardboard box. The recovery of SCP-5629 was conducted without altercation and without realization from the residence. SCP-5629 is now being contained in SCP’s Anomalous Materials Lab at Site-64. When someone opens SCP-5629, they seem to become captivated by what they are reading. They will not respond to any outside interaction until they have completed the reading of SCP-5629 in its entirety (Who will from this point be referred to as SCP-5629-1). SCP-5629-1's eyes dilate, and they begin mumbling incoherently. It is noted that in all tests conducted with SCP-5629-1, they seem to not blink until the completion of SCP-5629 where they will then become disoriented and pass out. Once SCP-5629-1 awakens, they are confused and have little to no memory of the instance. To remain unaffected by SCP-5629 once opened, one must maintain the distance of approximately three (3) to four (4) meters (or greater). It appears if someone is unable to make out the words in which they are reading, then they are unaffected. Attempts to photograph pages of SCP-5629 have been unsuccessful. When a photograph of a page is taken, the resulting image depicts the pages are entirely black with what is presumably ink. The same instance occurs when SCP-5629 is viewed using a camera. It has been concluded that the only way for SCP-5629's effects to happen, one must make direct site with SCP-5629's pages.
Addendum 5629-1: The effects of SCP-5629 seem to remain dormant until a specific instance occurs involving SCP-5629-1. The tests involving SCP-5629-1 had been conducted one (1) week prior to the incident that occurred in the following: Subject SCP-5629-1 was in their cell when they began to go into a trance and started mumbling the same incoherent sentences as they did when they had read SCP-5629. Also, in the cell was D-45██████ who began crying for help upon noticing the distress of SCP-5629-1. The camera in the cell of SCP-5629-1 and D-45██████ captured the actions of SCP-5629-1 which followed exactly one (1) minute after they had fallen into their trance. SCP-5629-1 then approached D-45██████, who was banging on the cell door in attempts to get the attention of a guard, and put their hands on D-45██████'s face. SCP-5629-1 began pressing their thumbs into the eye sockets of D-45██████'s skull. D-45██████'s resistance was futile, and they were unable to overpower SCP-5629-1. Upon the full insertion of SCP-5629-1's thumbs into D-45██████'s eye sockets, SCP-5629-1 then fell into a seizure where after exactly five (5) minutes, movement ceased. Guards entered the cell approximately seven (7) minutes after the incident had begun. Doctors examined the bodies of both SCP-5629-1 and D-45██████. D-45██████ was pronounced dead due to major trauma sustained by the eyes and cranium. SCP-5629-1 was pronounced dead due to [REDACTED].
