Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: Due to SCP-4122’s size and volatile nature, the Foundation are currently incapable in transferring the entity to Site-45, despite the site’s relatively close proximity to SCP-4122. In order to maintain appropriate containment measures, Site-45 is to hold provisional jurisdiction over the entity as Site-45-B until a permanent containment method is found and a new site is constructed to oversee SCP-4122. Site-45-B is to hold a containment perimeter around SCP-4122, currently measuring a distance of 1.1 kilometres in diameter. Under no circumstances are Foundation personnel permitted to cross the perimeter into SCP-4122’s sphere of influence.

The containment perimeter is to constructed of a strong easy to dismantle chain-link fence system for easier relocation during Procedure 12-Fallback. At this current time, this perimeter is to be patrolled 24 hours a day by 22 Site-45-B security personnel, 2 of which are to patrol the perimeter with vehicular transportation. The number of Site-45-B personnel patrolling SCP-4122 is to increase by 2 for every 0.1 kilometres that the entity’s sphere of influence increases in range.

In order to measure the diameter of SCP-4122’s growing control distance, a set of 12 cages are to be placed 20 metres within the site’s boundary by D-class personnel. Each cage is to hold a single Southern Brown Bandicoot (Isoodon Obesulus) as an early warning detection system for site personnel. Each Bandicoot is to be tagged with an implant capable of measuring levels of brain activity, blood pressure and heart-rate. When 3 of the 12 caged Bandicoots begin to show several signs of distress and erratic brain activity, personnel are advised to begin preparations for Procedure 12-Fallback. When 6 of the 12 Bandicoots start displaying these symptoms, Procedure 12-Fallback must commence immediately.

Procedure 12-Fallback: After countless attempts to fully contain SCP-4122 and its spread in the area, the 05 Council with the assistance of Site Director [REDACTED] of Site-45 devised a plan to maintain an isolated perimeter of the entity while also reducing its growth rate. The following information details the steps necessary in carrying out Procedure 12-Fallback successfully.

[STEP 1]: Security guards are to maintain a defensive perimeter around SCP-4122 with 12 caged Southern Brown Bandicoots 20 metres within the perimeter acting as early warnings for the staff present at Site-45-B.

[STEP 2]: Once 3 of the 12 implanted Bandicoots begin showing numerous symptoms of SCP-4122’s spread, site personnel must begin to pack all equipment and supplies non-essential to SCP-4122’s containment, (including but limited to: research equipment, food and drinks, stockpiled ammunition, unneeded electronic equipment.) Once all non-essential equipment and supplies are securely packed for transport in Site-45-B’s Mobile Research Base, staff are advised to wait for step 3.

[STEP 3]: Once 6 of the 12 caged Bandicoots show several symptoms of SCP-4122’s control, Foundation security staff are to terminate and incinerate all Bandicoots and begin to dismantle the fence system surrounding SCP-4122 for transportation. The 2 mobile security personnel on patrol must now proceed around the deconstructed perimeter and collect all the pieces of the fence system while the security team travels to the next designated perimeter.

[STEP 4]: Once Procedure 12-Fallback is in effect, Site-45 is to transfer 2 new security personnel, 12 Bandicoot and their cages, 12 bio-reading implants, extra fencing equipment and any other supplies lost prior to the procedure to Site-45-B’s location. After every 5th Procedure 12-Fallback, Site-45 is to send an extra patrol vehicle to Site-45-B along with 20 temporary security personnel to carry out the back-burning of the area outside of Site-45-B’s perimeter as well.

[STEP 5]: Site-45-B staff and security are to proceed 100 metres outward from their last perimeter line and rebuild a new boundary for SCP-4122. Any wildlife spotted along the way towards the new designated perimeter are to be terminated and incinerated.

[STEP 6]: Once the perimeter fence as been established and the delivery of equipment from Site-45 to Site-45-B has been carried out, Site staff and security may now begin assigning D-class inmates to implant and cage their new Bandicoot subjects 20 metres within the new perimeter. Once the Bandicoot warning system is online, staff may now begin to unpack their supplies and continue their tasks within their Mobile Research Base.

[STEP 7]: The 20 newly arrived security staff from Site-45 must now begin to control burn-off the outlaying area of local flora while also dispersing fauna from the Site. This back-burning will steadily take more time to accomplish and future Procedure 12-Fallback operations will require more manpower.

[STEP 8]: Return to Step 1 and repeat when necessary.

Special Containment Procedures [CONTINUED]: Security personnel patrolling the perimeter are to terminate and incinerate any local wildlife approaching the general direction of SCP-4122. Any locals in the area who discover the site must be escorted off the premises by one armed guard and given a class-A amnestic. Locals who refuse to leave the area are to be met with force with the threat of termination if they do not comply. Any terminated locals must be incinerated. Due to SCP-4122’s constant growth and high involvement of security personnel, Site-45-B is to be disguised as an Australian Defence Force exercise ground as a cover story. In order to decrease the growth rate of SCP-4122, Site-45-B staff will routinely back-burn the area surrounding the perimeter and beyond, destroying any potential fauna and flora that SCP-4122 might attempt to control and absorb in the future.

Any SCP-4122-2 instances seen emerging from SCP-4122 or have already breached containment must be terminated via standard firearms. Once terminated, SCP-4122-2 entities will reanimate within the next 2-30 minutes depending on the amount of damage inflicted on the instance. Complete evisceration by explosive weaponry is prohibited due to the potential misfire and spread of the contaminated pieces of SCP-4122-2 instances. Once the entity is terminated by conventional means, the deceased SCP-4122-2 must be incinerated to guarantee the entity's destruction.

Description: SCP-4122 is a continuously expanding Tar-pit located in the Little Sandy Desert in Western Australia, currently measuring at ███ square metres. SCP-4122’s temperature maintains a constant temperature of 656°c and any attempts to alter the temperature of SCP-4122 have been met with unsuccessful results.

The expansion rate of SCP-4122 varies when exposed to certain factors, but SCP-4122’s average growth rate when not exposed to any catalysts is ████ every ████. The growth rate of SCP-4122 appears to accelerate at different speeds during small intervals of time when it absorbs organic matter, which includes both fauna and flora. Organisms both alive or recently deceased act as catalysts for SCP-4122, as per containment procedures, any organic matter outside the perimeter or attempting to breech the containment site must be terminated and incinerated. In doing this, the Foundation is able to hinder the expansion rate of SCP-4122 when it is to absorb the remnants of the now deceased organism in the near future. When SCP-4122 absorbs the burnt remains of organic matter, the entity still appears to expand at an increased rate, but not for a long duration as opposed to a live or recently terminated organism. See Test Log – 4122 Growth rates for more details.

Another key attribute of SCP-4122 is its mind-altering field of influence the entity projects from its point of origin, an anomalous trait which was not detected when SCP-4122 was first discovered, see Discovery for more information. This field of effect only targets animals with a Hypothalamus (the part of the brain which controls hormonal release and regulates hunger and thirst, among other functions.) When animals are caught within SCP-4122’s range, they begin to experience an uncontrollable thirst and slight hunger, regardless of if they are well fed and hydrated and will travel varying distances until they reach SCP-4122. Upon reaching the Entity, the influenced animal will attempt to throw themselves into SCP-4122, killing themselves and giving SCP-4122 a new organism to consume and grow. Rare cases have been recorded showing organisms attempting to eat a hand or mouth-full of SCP-4122 before lunging into the entity.

The current range of SCP-4122’s mind-altering effect is an estimated ███ kilometres in diameter in a spherical coverage. Organisms under SCP-4122’s influence which are removed from the entity’s range will still be under the object’s control and there is no known Amnestic that is able to render the affected organism free of SCP-4122’s control. At this current time, physical restraint and termination is the only method of preventing any affected organisms from returning to SCP-4122.

An estimated █% of organisms that fall victim to SCP-4122’s influence and attempt to terminate themselves by falling into SCP-4122, will be rejected by the entity and will go through a process of reanimation upon the controlled organism’s expiration, upon reanimation, these organisms are to be classified as SCP-4122-2 instances. This process involves SCP-4122-2 instances making their way out of SCP-4122’s tar and regaining full cognitive and bodily function over the next 2 minutes to █ hours. Observations have shown that the tar matter of SCP-4122 appears to have regenerative abilities for SCP-4122-2 instances upon their reanimation and rejection.

The tar substance covering SCP-4122-2 instances unlike the tar substance within SCP-4122 appears to be a significantly weaker in its structural composition and is able to be destroyed by incendiary weaponry. SCP-4122-2 Entities appear as they were before their contact with SCP-4122 with the only physical modification being that they are completely covered in boiling tar which shows no indication of causing the instance any further harm, nor can the Tar be removed without harming the subject.

SCP-4122-2 Entities appear to show no convulsion to return to SCP-4122, nor are sentient instances aware of their current physical alterations from their exposure to SCP-4122. After the resurrection process, SCP-4122-2 instances will begin to locate any nearby organisms related to their own species. Sentient organisms will seek others for assistance in removing the Tar.

The primary anomalous trait in SCP-4122-2 entities is their ability to act as mobile relays for SCP-4122’s field of influence. The exact range of SCP-4122-2 instance’s effect differs between organisms, with small wildlife having an area of effect of about 1.5 metres in diameter and larger mammals such as Humans having a range of 10 metres. Once unaffected organisms are caught within SCP-4122-2’s relayed control signal they will begin to proceed to SCP-4122 regardless of any distance or harmful obstacle in their way. As per containment procedures, all SCP-4122-2 entities found emerging from SCP-4122 or are caught escaping or have already escaped containment, must be terminated and their body incinerated to prevent any more individuals from falling victim to SCP-4122.

Discovery: SCP-4122 was first discovered in the Little Sandy Desert on the 17/11/2018 upon the disappearance of the tourist tour group in the area. Three Foundation agents from Site-45 were immediately notified of the event and were dispatched to Little Sandy Desert to investigate the missing individuals. Agents Alemanni, Carter and Makowski arrived at 1:35pm and began their search for any remnants or signs of the tourist group. At 1:42pm, Carter and Alemanni ceased communication with site-command and began a slow march towards the area where the tourist group were last confirmed to be travelling through, incoherently mumbling about their extreme thirst and needing water. Agent Makowski was unaffected by the strange anomaly and informed site command that the other operatives appeared to be caught in a field of control and were being drawn to their initial destination.

The exact nature of the control remained unknown to Makowski, whether the effect was psychological or chemical. Out of precaution, MTF unit Beta-7 “Maz Hatters” were sent to the scene to contain the unidentified anomaly. At 6:05pm, the Maz Hatters arrived at Makowski’s location and began a circular perimeter sweep 100 metres from the Anomaly’s possible location. Following the formation of a temporary perimeter line, talks would begin in establishing Site-45-B.
