Item #: SCP-XXXXXX
Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXXXX, while not in use, must be kept within a designated Foundation office space of Level 2 security clearance, upright (with its open side facing up), with its packaging tape firmly affixed so it may remain closed, and within visual range of an office supply or filing cabinet. SCP-XXXXXX must remain in the open rather than in an enclosed space, preferably in a corner of the room. An SCP-XXXXXX label must be affixed to one of its flat surfaces. After use of SCP-XXXXXX, it must be returned to the designated Foundation office, and the door must remain closed while it is not being directly supervised. In the case of a containment breach, all Foundation personnel must remove all objects on their person that may be classified as a “box”, even by some stretch of the imagination, and direct them to Dr. Alto Clef’s office until the item containing the aforementioned label is found or until SCP-XXXXXX is otherwise properly identified. While SCP-XXXXXX is in use, it must be accompanied by at least one person among Foundation personnel, and kept under supervision.

Description: SCP-XXXXXX is a 0.5-meter tall cardboard box, weighing exactly 5 kilograms. The manufacturer of SCP-XXXXXX is currently unknown, as there are no labels or markings to identify a brand name or serial number. SCP-XXXXXX is usually upside down with its flaps extended, with a single strip of ████-brand packaging tape affixed to one of its flaps, added after SCP-XXXXXX’s manufacture. SCP-XXXXXX’s face can be recognized by its 22-centimeter long handle and opening. The exact location of this handle changes when unsupervised, but it will always remain along a flat side of its surface, except along its bottom or its flaps. SCP-XXXXXX’s flaps will attempt to close when it is lifted off of the ground. Placing it on the floor in an upside down position will cause SCP-XXXXXX to open the flaps and allow it to move autonomously by sliding across the floor. The interior of the box is usually empty, except during circumstances that would affect its contents, per its anomalous properties.

SCP-XXXXXX is directly affected by the subject’s mind and imagination, changing its appearance, dimensions, and capabilities depending on what the subject believes it to be capable of. Further testing has shown that SCP-XXXXXX is able to alter the physiology of subjects, and fills in logical unknowns that the subject may not be aware of so as to fulfill the beliefs of the subject.

Numerous alterations to the entire structure of SCP-XXXXXX have been recorded during testing. While the altered state is fully made of cardboard, it functions as intended, and the appearance of SCP-XXXXXX reverts to its original state after being left idle for 3-5 minutes. Anomalous reconfigurations compatible with SCP-XXXXXX include (but are not limited to) a ████████ printer, video projector, computer monitor, television, radio, refrigerator, oven, grill, autonomous vacuum cleaner, boxing glove, doll house, vest, and a to-scale cardboard recreation of the Alamo. Alteration of the form of SCP-XXXXXX resets its physical state, repairing any damage sustained, and removing any stains along its surface. Anomalous reconfigurations incompatible with SCP-XXXXXX include portals, liquids, energy, or structures that exceed the size of the room it is placed in.

SCP-XXXXXX can be instructed to perform tasks autonomously by human beings, but does not respond to the commands of non-human SCP’s. It has been found to roam on its own when special containment procedures are not followed. Communication with SCP-XXXXXX is possible by interpreting pictures that “print” from its handle. Both verbal and written communication have been accepted and responded to, as long as the subject believes it is capable of responding. SCP-XXXXXX is not considered sentient, and is unable to disobey an order given to it unless it is beyond its capacity to perform.

Objects produced by SCP-XXXXXX, including the paper on which it produces its messages, do not decay. Instead, 1 hour after objects leave the room where SCP-XXXXXX is being used, said objects disappear, even while being observed (Hereafter referred to as “deletion”). The deletion of objects includes direct duplications of SCP-XXXXXX, as well as clones of living organisms after SCP-XXXXXX was altered by subject ██████ to create copies of himself. Deletion radius of effect is estimated to be roughly one kilometer from SCP-XXXXXX if SCP-XXXXXX is not being kept within an enclosed room. Because of this, use of SCP-XXXXXX to produce paper documents must be followed by creating a certified copy using a photocopier or other appropriate device.

Inserting objects into the handle of SCP-XXXXXX that already exist does not result in their deletion; instead, the objects (including data existing on said objects) are returned after alterations are made. Alterations to pre-existing objects are permanent, unless re-inserted into SCP-XXXXXX, though alterations cannot include new anomalous properties outside of the realm of possibility.

Due to their imagination, children were requested as test subjects in spite of Incident XXXXXX-██████ (See Addendum-XXXXXX-2), but have been denied.

Authorized use of SCP-XXXXXX includes the following functions: vacuuming, photocopying, printing, encryption of data, translating foreign languages, paper shredding, and production of documents through direct verbal request (requires explicit knowledge of the document in question). Repeated unauthorized use of SCP-XXXXXX without Level 2 security clearance will result in disciplinary action, up to or including termination.

Addendum-XXXXXX-1: Testing and Behavioral Observations
Test subject physically entered SCP-XXXXXX after reading popular daily comic strip collections of ████████████. SCP-XXXXXX changed to exhibit the traits of a “transmogrifier” shortly afterward. Subject used SCP-XXXXXX to shift their appearance to that of an anthropomorphic original character, though he did not possess the distinct inhuman abilities of the character. Subject later died of poisoning after consuming ██████, a food that the character would not be able to eat if it were real.

Addendum-XXXXXX-2: Recovery; Incident XXXXXX-██████
Discovery of SCP-XXXXXX was the result of an investigation by ██████ police, in which SCP-XXXXXX in use by a child included the belief held by the subject that, while closed and upright, SCP-XXXXXX could be a Jack in the Box. The parents of the child were attempting to alleviate the fears of the child by playing pretend using SCP-XXXXXX. They reported seeing a crank appear on the side of the box after the child began playing with it. Because the child had a severe phobia related to Jack in the Box toys, SCP-XXXXXX became a ████, and opening of the box caused a ██████ to manifest, resulting in the violent death of the child. Once the ██████ had retreated into SCP-XXXXXX, subsequent re-opening by witnesses revealed the box had returned to its original state.
