SCP-XXXX photographed from the perimeter

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe (Pending revision)

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is surrounded by a chain-link fence perimeter of 6 x 6 km, with guards stationed at regular intervals. CCTV cameras placed around the area must be active at all times. Individuals attempting to break into or out of SCP-XXXX are to be apprehended and questioned immediately. In order to determine whether or not apprehended individuals are instances of SCP-XXXX-A, further interrogation and evaluation, based on already established criteria, must be undertaken. If determined to be non-anomalous and safe for release, individuals are to be administered, as necessary, Class A, B or C amnestics.

All confirmed instances of SCP-XXXX-A are to be contained in basic humanoid cells with all reasonable amenities provided and should be allowed to speak and interact with select family members and friends (on authorization and varying case-by-case). Additionally, SCP-XXXX-A instances should be given at least one hour of free-roaming a day, under supervision, in designated zones. Level-3 security clearance is required for access to SCP-XXXX. As of 10/10/1997, no individuals with Level-2 security clearance or higher are to enter SCP-XXXX under any circumstances and no further testing of any kind is to be conducted on-site.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a stretch of forest approximately 5 x 5 km located in the outskirts of Huntington, Cabell, West Virginia. At any given moment, individuals in contact with the ground of SCP-XXXX may be pulled into the earth. Observation suggests this is facilitated by hidden tendrils formed of a previously unknown, and rapidly growing, species of fungus. Abductions occur primarily when individuals are isolated as SCP-XXXX is unable to abduct groups and in all cases result in death via suffocation. However, almost immediately, cocoon-like embryos, made of the same fungal species, are formed within the soil. These embryos then grow duplicates of the abducted individuals, referred to as SCP-XXXX-A, with individual instances identified as SCP-XXXX-A-1 through to SCP-XXXX-A-87. This process typically takes between 30 minutes and an hour. Upon completion, the cocoon is then brought to the surface and opened at which point it rapidly disintegrates as the SCP-XXXX-A digs itself out. The emerging SCP-XXXX-A will promptly resume whatever activity they were engaged in at the moment of their abduction.

Instances of SCP-XXXX-A are exact and perfect replicas of abducted individuals. Clothing items and other accessories on abducted persons are replicated with a high degree of accuracy, though the further examination of acquired samples determined them to be formed of organic materials. Electronic devices duplicated by SCP-XXXX also ceased to function. Notably, individual instances of SCP-XXXX-A are unable to recall their abduction and subsequent rebirth. Typically, a gap in memory between the time of abduction and the time of reemergence can be observed, usually between 30 minutes and an hour, hypothesized to correspond with the period of incubation.

Additionally, instances of SCP-XXXX-A appear to have a consistent proclivity for distinct patterns of behavior. In its most minor manifestation, this can be seen in the way SCP-XXXX-A instances interact with objects. Tests conducted placed a line up of items before instances of SCP-XXXX-A and compared their reactions to those of various D-Class personnel and other Foundation staff. SCP-XXXX-A instances were found to be more prone to thorough interactions, spending more time looking over, touching, moving and even smelling or tasting items. They were less interested, however, in objects made from leaves, twigs, stones and dirt, sometimes avoiding them altogether. Attempts to encourage SCP-XXXX-A instances to interact with these objects were often met with non-compliance and irritability.

SCP-XXXX-A instances also appear to have a greater inclination to revisit SCP-XXXX with the express intent of bringing others with them, typically friends and family. This modification to behavior appears to be purely subconscious. When questioned, SCP-XXXX-A instances cited their actions as simply being outing, vacation or travel recommendations. Instances of SCP-XXXX-A appear to be wholly unaware of any changes in their behavior. Also notable is that SCP-XXXX-A instances often struggle to identify why they made their recommendations and have been found to, in 97% of cases, make use of the exact phrase 'want them to feel new things' in reference to friends and family, when pressed for further justification.

If repeatedly denied accompaniment to SCP-XXXX, SCP-XXXX-A instances gradually become more aggressive and insistent and have been recorded as having resorting to threats, blackmail, violence and other more extreme methods of coercion in order to bring others to SCP-XXXX. When questioned, SCP-XXXX-A instances that are known to have engaged in such behavior express guilt and find it extremely difficult or impossible, to the point of distress, to justify their actions.

Furthermore, instances of SCP-XXXX-A, when informed about their status as replicated individuals, often respond with denial, doubt or skepticism, if not outright hostility. However, in all cases, the memory of their death and incubation process is thereafter gradually restored. Individuals are able to recall these events with a high level of detail and accuracy. It should be noted that the initial disclosures which prompt memory retrieval, as well as the nature of the retrieved memories, are often traumatic and thus should not be considered as a form of standard testing or evaluation.

Currently, 81 87 individuals are suspected by the Foundation to be instances of SCP-XXXX-A, however further investigation is warranted in identifying instances of SCP-XXXX-A among members of the Huntington community and overseas, as well within the [REDACTED]. 71 instances of SCP-XXXX-A are currently contained and 10 are pending confirmation. 5 priority RED instances, and 1 priority BLACK, have been detained requiring further analysis and interrogation as soon as possible.

Notable Instances of SCP-XXXX-A:

Identification Description
SCP-XXXX-A-1 Biologically a Caucasian female, child, aged █. First recorded instance of SCP-XXXX-A. Individual identified inconsistency in memory when compared to their 'parents' (SCP-XXXX-A-2 and SCP-XXXX-A-3), able to describe their abduction, death and subsequent incubation and reemergence. A child psychologist was involved who later contacted the authorities, eventually leading to Foundation involvement which allowed for the identification of SCP-XXXX. Currently contained. Regular access and interaction with SCP-XXXX-A-2 and SCP-XXXX-A-3 is allowed and encouraged.
SCP-XXXX-A-65 Biologically an Iranian-American male, adult, aged 34. Manifested in Experiment-XXXX-1. Subject of continued study. Currently contained.
SCP-XXXX-A-87 Biologically a Caucasian male, adult, aged ██. Priority BLACK. Currently apprehended and awaiting further analysis and interrogation. Served as [REDACTED] for some time, with access to [REDACTED], and may have [REDACTED]. Investigation ongoing.

Addendum-XXXX-1: On 5/29/1997 at 6:54 AM, Dr. Clemens performed Experiment-XXXX-1 in order to observe the effects of SCP-XXXX and determine how and where abducted individuals were taken as well as whether they could be retrieved safely. D-157258 was instructed to enter SCP-XXXX, observed by drone with security on stand-by. At 7:23 AM, D-157258 was pulled into the ground by SCP-XXXX. Attempts by personnel, including Dr. Clemens, to retrieve D-157258 failed and D-157258 was pronounced dead. At 7:49 AM, SCP-XXXX-A-65 emerged. Security footage was archived as CCTV-XXXX-1.

Addendum-XXXX-2: On █/█/1997, the excavation of various sites around SCP-XXXX unearthed 17 corpses matching individuals known to be instances of SCP-XXXX-A. The excavations also revealed an extensive network of root-like fungal structures proliferating the site. Formed of the same species involved in the abduction and gestation process, Dr. Clemens' current hypothesis suggests the structures to be the actual, physical form of SCP-XXXX, though this is as of yet unconfirmed. Upon his request, the soil content of SCP-XXXX was given thorough analysis, leading to the discovery of the same fungal content within its compound.

Addendum-XXXX-3: Interview with SCP-XXXX-A-65

Addendum-XXXX-4: Immediately following his interview with SCP-XXXX-A-65, Dr. Clemens ordered the excavation of the site used in Experiment-XXXX-1 and review of the archived footage, CCTV-XXXX-1. Analysis confirmed likely tampering with the recording. Further investigation, to determine whether any other materials connected to SCP-XXXX have been modified, is required. The apparent corpse of Dr. Clemens was unearthed from the site of Experiment-XXXX-1, along with five other Foundation staff, and submitted to mortuary facilities for further autopsy. Additional excavations on 7/10/1997 revealed an abnormally large cocoon, measuring at 9 meters long and 2 meters high, which was moved to a secure containment facility off-site. Efforts to open the cocoon, or preemptively trigger its hatching, failed, as did attempts to discern its contents.

Addendum-XXXX-5: Dr. █████ made senior researcher on 10/10/1997. Request for reclassification of SCP-XXXX pending.
