SCP-4296, as seen in telescope imagery
Item #: SCP-4296
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures:SCP-4296 cannot be contained due to it being ripped apart after it was caught by the sun's gravitational pull. However a recovered chunk of the comet, SCP-4265, has been contained and now resides in Site [REDACTED]. It is subject to its own containment procedures.
Description:SCP-4296 was detected on the 02/██/200█ entering the solar system just beyond Neptune, and it had an orbital period of approximately 2850 years, with a last reported sighting around the year 800 BCE in ancient china. initial observations suggested the nucleus had a diameter of 6 km. It reached a maximum brightness magnitude of -6 and was easily visible to the naked eye at night. The European Southern Observatory in Chile determined that its trajectory was altered by the orbit of the gas-giant, Jupiter and further calculations suggested it would orbit within the Roche limit of the sun, and would subsequently be ripped apart in the process. 7 months later, on the 26/██/200█, the comet was ripped apart as it came within 960,467 kilometers of the sun's surface and was completely destroyed.
